Here is Erin F.‘s submission to our new, and growing, Fans section.

Thank you for checking out the Psycho-pedia.
The goal is to have the most knowledgeable fans help in the process of filling up the Psycho-pedia with excellent Psychonauts information and facts before releasing the Psycho-pedia to the rest of the world.

Have a look around, there’s already some awesome articles and videos. And don’t be afraid to contribute! If you’d like to play around with editing articles first you can experiment in the Sandbox editor or read the basics on the How to page. The tags are very similar to the Double Fine Action Forum’s tags.

There’s also a lot of help needed in the “Extra” section. The Psycho-pedia still needs a lot of fan submissions, such as;

- Fan Art
- Fan Music inspired by or including samples from Psychonauts
- Psychonauts costumes
- And any other art you may have created while under the influence of Psychonauts

You can submit these things to Psychopedia@doublefine.com.

Background:

Nightmares are a surprisingly rare mental creature, although everyone has them somewhere in their mind. The head of this demon look much like a dragon, with two long curled horns, a snout with a flexible jaw, and bright glowing eyes. The body appears to be made of some sort of liquid, the outside covered with writhing souls screaming for mercy. It can open up in multiple places, as if the Nightmare was covered in bright red mouths, to extend a multitude of arms. These arms can range from normal looking human hands to sharp scythes that are used for attacking. Nightmares are able to hide underground by creating jaw-like holes in the ground. When underground, they can stretch their arms through the surface to attack or pull someone underneath with them.

If one is unlucky enough to come across one of these monsters, it’s best to attack it with Psi-Blasts from a long range. Physical combat is not recommended, as Nightmares are able to grab and pull their victims underground. Once the beast is nearly defeated, it splits itself in half, releasing small Personal Demons and sucking in energy. Leaving the Nightmare alone during this will let it recover, bringing it back up to full health. To prevent this, one must throw a Personal Demon into the Nightmare’s open body with Telekinesis. This causes an explosion inside of the Nightmare, turning it to stone. This is the only safe time to psi-punch the demon and destroy it for good.

Some unstable minds have Nightmares running amok and causing havoc in their Mental Worlds, such as in the Milkman Conspiracy. However, those who still have a grip on reality have been known to lock up their Nightmares in hidden psychic cages to prevent them from causing trouble. Milla’s room is an excellent example of this safety precaution.

Mental Morsels:

• Clairvoyance reveals that Milla’s Nightmares, like everyone else in her mind, see Raz as a dancing partygoer. Boyd’s Nightmares see Raz as an unknown figure.
• In Milla’s room, the cage containing the Nightmares has a door with a lock. It is impossible to release them.
• The Nightmares were originally going to attack you while in Milla’s Mind and sometimes pull one of the campers down; the game designers decided that this would be inappropriate for Milla’s mind though.
• When you’re battling them, Boyd’s Nightmares will occasionally shout messages backwards, which, when reversed, say things such as “death, I’ll get you”.
This power allows you to pick stuff up and throw it around with a disembodied psychic hand. You can throw Personal Demons, for instance, at a Nightmare‘s gaping maw. Or you could throw squirrels at rocks and watch them explode into pieces. Or you can pick up other campers or adults and listen to their protests, you jerk. The “throwing away” part doesn’t work with people, you can just hold them in the air, and if the squirrels’ fates are any indicator, they should be thankful about it. (The people.)

It will also help you to get the glass eye for the Scavenger Hunt.

Beware of telekinetic bears!

Mental Morsels:

• At rank 65 you will unlock Increased Range. It increases the range of Telekinesis (obviously), which is good for hilarious pranks, like throwing your best friend off a cliff.

Description:

Locked in the Asylum’s art therapy room, Edgar toils over his work. All day, every day, he paints bullfights on black velvet. He can paint nothing else. He is a man obsessed; a prisoner of Art.—official website

A true prisoner of art, Edgar was admitted into The Asylum when his obsession of bullfights overwhelmed him, leading him into fits of rage- a type of rage expressed by the very bulls he painted. Raz encounters him while he is trying to paint a portrait of Doctor Loboto, and instead of finishing it, he ends up, uncontrollably, painting a bullfight over it. It is later uncovered that Edgar’s obsession with bullfights is linked to his school past and a lost love…

Background:

Edgar used to be the captain of his high school wrestling team. It was then that he met Lana Panzoni the cheerleader, and the two hit it off. Unfortunately, she left him for the head of the cheerleading squad, Dean LeGrante, right around the time he and his team were going to compete in the state semi-finals. The breakup caused him to lose focus during his match and he lost the championship for the entire school and became an outcast. Ever since then, he had been unable to forget the people in his past that had caused him so much trouble. For this trouble, he became obsessed with bulls, leading to his bull-fighting problem. He wasn’t able to stop himself from painting a bullfight over all his black velvet portraits. Since Raz needed a portrait for the face of his Loboto costume, he needed to fix Edgar’s mind so he could finally finish a portrait of Dr. Loboto.

Mental Morsels:

• Edgar’s name comes from Edgar Leeteg, a man known as the father of velvet painting.
• According to Clairvoyance Edgar sees Raz as a joker card.
• There is a slight ambiguity concerning the symbolism of the bull. In one of the cutscenes during Edgar’s endgame, Lana and Dean’s mindforms cheer “What’s that spell? GO BULLS!”, suggesting that it was the name of the wrestling team. However, in the “Edgar’s Lament” memory reel, only Edgar is shown with a bull insignia on his shirt, while each teammate has his own iconic animal. This suggests that Edgar, personally, was known as “the Bull.”
• Considering his name and the voices of the “real” versions of his mental figures, it seems very unlikely that Edgar is actually Mexican or indeed even Hispanic. Whether his accent is a product of his disorder or an artistic affectation is unknown.

Quentin is a DJ in the band composed by him and his bestest friend ever, Phoebe. The band in question is called “The Levitators”, no matter what Phoebe says.

He is generally a very chilled guy, referring to everyone as “bro.” He frequently argues (in a very relaxed way) with Phoebe over what should they call their band. He also likes to play “band break-up”, pretending to have a quarrel with Phoebe, but she’s not at all for it.

His primary psychic skill is Levitation, and he claims to be able to levitate himself, Phoebe and their instruments (Phoebe’s drums and his turntables.) He also seems to be crushing on Kitty, going as far as to write a teeth-grinding song about her.

After recranialisation, he and Phoebe continue to practise, because music will be very helpful in a world destroyed by Brain Tanks.

Mental Morsels:

• It’s hinted that Quentin, like Raz and Lili was tuning into Coach Oleander‘s plot to take over the world. • Quentin is one of the few that see Raz as a Psychonaut (as revealed via Clairvoyance), although with the addition of a scarf, not unlike Sasha Nein‘s, or possibly his own.
