## Episode Transcript

10 secondsBAGEL: I have another one too.

12 secondsWrite down repetitive stress disorder.

14 seconds-Remember the polar bear? -Oh, you are talking about...

17 secondsThat's called repetitive stress disorder?

18 secondsI think it's called repetitive stress disorder.

21 seconds-Check it out, man. -No, it's not.

22 secondsCheck out the internet. It's not?

24 seconds-No, I just tested it. -Oh, cool.

26 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

27 secondsDo you mean, like, polar bears that are, like--

29 secondsThere is a polar bear at the San Francisco zoo,

31 secondsthat you'd go-- every time I went,

33 secondshe was just going back-and-forth every time.

35 secondsHe'd go-- all day long.

37 secondsTIM: They call it zoochosis.

40 secondsPsychosis caused by confinement.

42 seconds-BAGEL: Oh, really? -It's very common.

43 secondsIncluding repeatedly vomiting and eating your own vomit.

46 secondsBAGEL: Ugh, gross.

48 secondsTIM: And gorillas that sob. Oh, that'd be so sad.

51 secondsSobbing gorilla...

52 secondsAnd compulsively masturbating walruses.

54 secondsHa-ha, that's awesome.

55 seconds-How does a walrus masturbate? -Is there any other kind?

57 secondsOh, here. YouTube. Walruses masturbating.

1 minute and 0 seconds\[BAGEL LAUGHS\]

1 minute and 1 secondBAGEL: There is a video, I love it.

1 minute and 4 secondsVIDEO: He would roll over and masturbate...

1 minute and 6 seconds\[TIM AND BAGEL LAUGH\]

1 minute and 9 secondsAll right, next...

1 minute and 10 secondsIs it their back feet?

1 minute and 13 seconds-Oh, man! Oh, jeez! -Oh my god!

1 minute and 16 secondsUgh.

1 minute and 17 secondsAll right!

1 minute and 18 secondsI'm learning a lot.

1 minute and 22 secondsDo you think, like, it's hitting its long...

1 minute and 23 seconds\[BAGEL LAUGHS\]

1 minute and 26 seconds-Holy shit, that was disturbing. -Ugh.

1 minute and 28 secondsBAGEL: You guys are lucky.

1 minute and 29 secondsHey, if it was bad, God would've made his fin smaller.

1 minute and 32 seconds\[BAGEL LAUGHS\]

1 minute and 35 secondsTIM: What?

1 minute and 37 seconds\[TIM AND BAGEL LAUGH\]

1 minute and 38 seconds\[MUSIC\]

2 minutes and 11 seconds...and started brainstorming ideas for Psychonauts 2.

2 minutes and 14 secondsGREG: The idea now is not to just talk about the Psychonauts sequel.

2 minutes and 17 secondsWe are talking about VR experiences.

2 minutes and 20 secondsTIM: As kind of a missing mission between Psychonauts 1 and 2.

2 minutes and 22 secondsBRAD: It's a hard game to make. It's a really hard game to make.

2 minutes and 25 secondsAnd they are trying to do some stuff that's, like,

2 minutes and 27 secondsyou know, that's basically never been done before.

2 minutes and 30 secondsTIM: One of our longest-term employees is leaving the company.

2 minutes and 33 secondsRay Crook and Chad Dawson will be co-project leading GVR.

2 minutes and 36 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

2 minutes and 37 secondsYeah, we'll see how it goes.

2 minutes and 44 secondsTIM: Excellent! Awesome! Let's talk about GVR.

2 minutes and 47 secondsThanks for sitting close to each other, you guys.

2 minutes and 49 secondsAnd thanks for not wearing a creepy foil finger, Chad.

2 minutes and 52 secondsI'll put it down... after the update.

2 minutes and 54 secondsWhat happened last week in the world of--

2 minutes and 55 secondsin the exciting world of virtual reality?

2 minutes and 57 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

2 minutes and 58 secondsI'll let you go, since you got the finger.

3 minutes and 0 secondsOkay.

3 minutes and 2 secondsRAY: So, we finished the 5XP, the five-minute experience.

3 minutes and 5 secondsWe had quite a few people, ten or so, come and try it.

3 minutes and 7 secondsAnd, uh, got a lot of really good feedback.

3 minutes and 10 secondsUm, things that are good, things that are bad.

3 minutes and 12 secondsUm, so, that was encouraging.

3 minutes and 14 secondsUm, yeah, we've been doing some cool stuff with, um...

3 minutes and 17 secondsMartin has been working on with just sort of the space,

3 minutes and 20 secondswith the Rhombus of Ruin, and what that's going to look like.

3 minutes and 23 seconds\[MUSIC\]

3 minutes and 26 seconds-PAUL: How's it been? -RAY: Good.

3 minutes and 28 secondsPAUL: Yeah?

3 minutes and 29 secondsYeah. Busy.

3 minutes and 30 secondsThis is just the check-in with project lead style that we've setup.

3 minutes and 34 secondsAlso, because you guys were new project leaders.

3 minutes and 35 secondsHow do you guys like being project leaders?

3 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: I'm a strong believer that when you are first time leading a project,

3 minutes and 41 secondsyou should have a partner.

3 minutes and 42 secondsLike, uh...

3 minutes and 43 secondsBy the way, this is Day of the Tentacle.

3 minutes and 46 secondsMe and Dave.

3 minutes and 47 secondsAnd it-- Because, um...

3 minutes and 48 secondsYour first time leading a project-- at least I was very intimidated.

3 minutes and 51 secondsYou have all this self-doubt, like:

3 minutes and 52 seconds"Should I be running this? Does everyone think I'm crazy?"

3 minutes and 55 secondsAnd then you have this other partner, and they are like:

3 minutes and 56 seconds"Yeah, they do! They think we are all crazy."

3 minutes and 58 seconds-"What are we going to do about that?" -"I don't know."

3 minutes and 59 secondsAnd you can just talk like that with somebody.

4 minutes and 1 secondAnd having an ally is just really important.

4 minutes and 3 secondsBecause it's, uh, it's lonely at the top.

4 minutes and 6 secondsAre you still able to do your first jobs?

4 minutes and 8 secondsThis is mostly my lesson to explain my problem with writing deadlines.

4 minutes and 12 secondsSo you guys will understand...

4 minutes and 13 seconds-...my problem with writing. -It's true.

4 minutes and 14 secondsYeah, you don't do what you are good at, right?

4 minutes and 17 secondsRAY: Yeah, I think-- I think it happens to everybody.

4 minutes and 19 secondsI think everybody that, uh, has a specialty, you know,

4 minutes and 23 secondsyou eventually, um, move into management.

4 minutes and 26 secondsAnd you start-- and you get to do less and less of what you enjoy doing.

4 minutes and 33 secondsCHAD: I treasure the days I actually get to check-in code that--

4 minutes and 35 secondsthat works and runs, and I feel like a programmer again.

4 minutes and 39 secondsThis-- this skill that you've been trying to hone and practice

4 minutes and 44 secondsand, um, that you love doing, um...

4 minutes and 47 secondsYou-- And you start losing it, right?

4 minutes and 50 secondsI mean, you start losing it to some degree.

4 minutes and 52 secondsAnd when you are not doing it, you just become rusty at it.

4 minutes and 56 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

4 minutes and 57 secondsCHAD: I've always loved Ray's animation in particular.

5 minutes and 0 secondsEver since I worked with him on Brütal.

5 minutes and 2 secondsUm, he added so much to characters.

5 minutes and 4 secondsIt's been a little frustrating

5 minutes and 6 secondsnot getting to see him kind of put that Ray charm on the characters.

5 minutes and 10 secondsYeah, it's a different-- it's a shift.

5 minutes and 13 secondsHopefully, it's a net win.

5 minutes and 14 secondsBoth of us have been around for a while now.

5 minutes and 16 secondsThere is a lot we have to offer.

5 minutes and 18 secondsYou know, I'm trying to think of some of these new guys who are...

5 minutes and 21 secondsI'm scared to think they might be, you know,

5 minutes and 24 secondstwenty years younger than me or whatever.

5 minutes and 25 secondsYou know, fifteen or more years in the industry less.

5 minutes and 28 secondsUm, I'm trying to think--

5 minutes and 30 secondsWhen I started, I didn't have many people with that much difference of experience.

5 minutes and 34 secondsHow nice it might have been

5 minutes and 35 secondsto have someone with that amount of experience

5 minutes and 38 secondsgive me a little bit of mentorship, give me a little bit of leadership,

5 minutes and 41 secondssteer me in the right way,

5 minutes and 43 secondsum, help me become a better programmer faster.

5 minutes and 47 secondsYou-- you start to recognize that you have something to offer on that,

5 minutes and 50 secondsthat you didn't even know that you had, you know.

5 minutes and 53 secondsAnd... that's-- that could be a good thing.

5 minutes and 57 seconds...most on this project since then has been not only leadership,

6 minutes and 1 secondbut also on the design side,

6 minutes and 3 secondswith sort of a design team of sorts.

6 minutes and 5 secondsEMILY: So you need to find music.

6 minutes and 7 secondsYou know you have to find music somehow.

6 minutes and 9 secondsAnd so you are searching around and you find the music box,

6 minutes and 13 secondsbut it's broken.

6 minutes and 14 secondsEMILY: You CV into the rat that's next to--

6 minutes and 16 seconds-The rat? -EMILY: The rat.

6 minutes and 17 seconds-EMILY: I don't know, just go with it. -Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

6 minutes and 19 secondsAnd, uh, the last piece is a little too small to fix,

6 minutes and 23 secondsso you have to CV into the bed bug.

6 minutes and 27 seconds-TIM: Mm-hmm. -Get even smaller.

6 minutes and 28 secondsEMILY: Or a flea on the back of the rat.

6 minutes and 29 secondsAnd take that little like grain of sand or something and knock it off.

6 minutes and 32 seconds-EMILY: And-- and then-- -RAY: Oh, yeah!

6 minutes and 34 seconds-Once you get all this stuff out... -Once you pull that thing out...

6 minutes and 35 seconds-...it just starts going. -...it just starts going.

6 minutes and 37 secondsOh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's better!

6 minutes and 38 secondsSo, if you try and crank it from the outside

6 minutes and 41 secondsit just goes: "Tick, tick, tick." It just won't move.

6 minutes and 42 seconds-TIM: It's already wound-up. -It's, like, overcranked.

6 minutes and 44 seconds-Yeah, it's overcranked. -Yeah.

6 minutes and 45 secondsOkay, and so once you remove the thing, it just starts playing.

6 minutes and 48 seconds-And then it starts playing. -Okay.

6 minutes and 50 secondsTIM: I have high hopes for that team,

6 minutes and 51 secondsbecause Emily has turned out to just be a creative powerhouse.

6 minutes and 54 secondsShe just comes up with tons of ideas.

6 minutes and 55 secondsShe comes to every meeting with like eight Post-it notes

6 minutes and 57 secondsto lay out some idea she had.

6 minutes and 59 secondsUm, and I'm like: "I didn't bring any Post-it notes. Man!"

7 minutes and 2 secondsI was like: "That overachiever, I need to put her down!"

7 minutes and 4 secondsNo, she is, like...

7 minutes and 6 secondsTIM: You know, I found a lot of times, someone's here at the company

7 minutes and 8 secondsfor one profession, or one area of expertise.

7 minutes and 10 secondsBut you get them to a brainstorming meeting

7 minutes and 12 secondsthey are just this fountain of, like:

7 minutes and 13 seconds"What about this? What about this? What about this?"

7 minutes and 15 secondsAnd that's so valuable.

7 minutes and 16 secondsI don't know how I did that, but I did.

7 minutes and 18 secondsI just started bringing in, like, weird design stuff and just presenting.

7 minutes and 23 secondsAnd I just had ideas, and...

7 minutes and 26 secondsI just think that that's a fun thing to do

7 minutes and 28 secondsis to sort of design story and what happens.

7 minutes and 31 secondsAnd I try to think about what's-- what I think would be cool in a game.

7 minutes and 37 secondsCHAD:That can always be a little bit tricky without someone,

7 minutes and 40 secondsyou know, being the de facto design lead.

7 minutes and 44 secondsParticularly, um, bringing Tim in with his busy schedule.

7 minutes and 48 secondsHim not being able to make it to all the meetings,

7 minutes and 51 secondsand being on sort of a different page than us,

7 minutes and 53 secondsI think it took us a little while to get that going.

7 minutes and 56 secondsRAY: Emily has a good idea that we could avoid that maybe.

7 minutes and 59 seconds-Hey, there you are! -TIM: Hi.

8 minutes and 0 secondsUm, so then, maybe stabilize the bus. Maybe not, if we don't go that way.

8 minutes and 4 secondsCHAD: Neither of us, I think, really expected

8 minutes and 6 secondsto kind of have to fill that in as much.

8 minutes and 8 secondsWe are going to, I think, just continue on Milla's?

8 minutes and 10 seconds-Yeah! -Okay.

8 minutes and 11 secondsCHAD: On the bus.

8 minutes and 12 secondsI feel like you should be able to do, like, turn signal, windshield wipers...

8 minutes and 16 secondsYeah, right? Use all those stupid things.

8 minutes and 18 seconds-Once the bus has power. -Yeah.

8 minutes and 20 secondsMaybe if he can get the power restored in the bus,

8 minutes and 23 secondshe can, uh, get it going.

8 minutes and 25 secondsSo, the trick to this one is...

8 minutes and 27 secondsYou are at a dashboard here, and there is a stop sign, and a hood.

8 minutes and 31 secondsAnd if I hit this button, um, it pops the hood open.

8 minutes and 35 secondsAnd the hood actually kind of pops from the front.

8 minutes and 37 secondsSo you can see it from the driver's point of view,

8 minutes and 39 secondsdown in the hood.

8 minutes and 40 secondsAnd you see that the battery is dead or missing,

8 minutes and 42 secondsbut you can't do much about it.

8 minutes and 43 secondsBut then, there is a bunch of sharks and eels circling.

8 minutes and 47 secondsBut as you put up the stop sign, it's kind of like musical chairs.

8 minutes and 50 secondsThey all kind of stop.

8 minutes and 51 secondsSo, if you are quick, and you can stop and catch an electric eel,

8 minutes and 55 secondsthen you can pop the hood,

8 minutes and 58 secondsand catch the electric eel, and he replaces the battery,

9 minutes and 1 secondand now you have power to the radio.

9 minutes and 3 secondsBut we got the-- we got the stop sign, eel, and the hood thing, right?

9 minutes and 6 seconds-The electric eel made it. -Eel in the hood.

9 minutes and 9 secondsEMILY: That was a joke. It was a joke.

9 minutes and 11 seconds-Eel from the hood. -Man! The eels in the hood.

9 minutes and 14 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

9 minutes and 17 secondsWe've hit that point in the meeting where anything is funny.

9 minutes and 19 seconds-All right, all right. -Very dangerous. Very dangerous!

9 minutes and 22 secondsCHAD: But particularly as he started getting the idea to do Psychonauts 2

9 minutes and 26 secondshis focus has been more-- more on that.

9 minutes and 29 secondsGrasslands is starting to warm up.

9 minutes and 31 secondsBecause I'm starting to actually pull out back my design documents.

9 minutes and 34 secondsBecause next week is the art jam for Grasslands.

9 minutes and 37 secondsAs Scott Campbell and Nathan Stapley are going to be coming to town,

9 minutes and 40 secondsand Peter Chan.

9 minutes and 41 secondsAnd be hold up in the back room, drawing stuff, um,

9 minutes and 44 secondstalking about, uh, Grasslands.

9 minutes and 46 secondsFor new guys, that's Psychonauts 2. That's our code name for Psychonauts 2.

9 minutes and 49 secondsSo, we are just getting ready for that.

9 minutes and 51 secondsWhich is good, because to get that started--

9 minutes and 53 secondsBecause we need to get some of those things--

9 minutes and 54 secondsjust for the design of the game would be good, but also to, um--

9 minutes and 57 secondsYou just made the craziest face at me right now.

9 minutes and 59 secondsMatt was yawning and then doing the: "I'm going to hide a yawn."

10 minutes and 2 secondsAnd it turned into, like, a death mask.

10 minutes and 4 seconds-Kind of... -\[LAUGHTER\]

10 minutes and 7 secondsAnd I happened to catch it right when I was talking.

10 minutes and 8 secondsYou scared me!

10 minutes and 9 secondsBut also, some of the art would obviously be helpful

10 minutes and 11 secondswhen we start our campaign for Grasslands on Fig.

10 minutes and 14 secondsWhenever Grasslands is going to start, pre-production is going to start,

10 minutes and 18 secondsyou know, Tim is just going to start...

10 minutes and 20 secondstaking our people.

10 minutes and 22 secondsHe's going to take Emily, he's going to try to take Bagel.

10 minutes and 25 seconds-Right? I mean, the people that he is-- -I know.

10 minutes and 27 seconds...that he is saying: "Hey, I want them in the art jam."

10 minutes and 28 secondsWhich is Emily and Bagel.

10 minutes and 30 secondsWho are both our-- our artists.

10 minutes and 33 secondsMALENA: You know, we-- we were a studio that we all worked on Psychonauts.

10 minutes and 37 secondsAnd then we all worked on Brütal Legend.

10 minutes and 38 secondsAnd then we went to four projects.

10 minutes and 42 secondsAnd it was tricky.

10 minutes and 43 secondsIt was definitely tricky to balance all of the people and the needs.

10 minutes and 47 secondsYou know, so, it's like,

10 minutes and 48 secondsthe fact that he identified Emily

10 minutes and 50 secondsas somebody that he wanted,

10 minutes and 52 secondsI think, is actually really great for the company.

10 minutes and 55 secondsBecause it means that-- that Tim is recognizing

10 minutes and 59 secondsthat there are people in the studio who have good design ideas,

11 minutes and 6 secondscan produce great art, and that we don't ha--

11 minutes and 9 secondsI mean, yes, we've got all these people that we love working with,

11 minutes and 11 secondsScott and Peter,

11 minutes and 13 secondsum, but cultivating that talent from within,

11 minutes and 16 secondsI think, is really important too, so.

11 minutes and 18 seconds-CHAD: Right. -Okay.

11 minutes and 19 secondsMALENA: I'm totally pleased that he asked for her by name.

11 minutes and 22 secondsRAY: Okay.

11 minutes and 23 secondsMALENA: Grasslands is only starting to emerge as a thing.

11 minutes and 27 secondsAnd then, until Tim really has a good design worked out,

11 minutes and 31 secondsI can't imagine that he is going to have a huge team of content creators

11 minutes and 36 secondsuntil-- until we know what it is that we are building.

11 minutes and 40 secondsMALENA: Anything else?

11 minutes and 42 seconds-I don't think so. -Nothing I can think of.

11 minutes and 43 seconds-It'd be great to have you next week. -Yeah, hopefully you can come.

11 minutes and 46 seconds-All right, okay. Thanks, guys. Bye! -RAY: Okay, bye!

11 minutes and 49 secondsMALENA: I also really like Chad and Ray.

11 minutes and 50 secondsAnd I think it's a great opportunity

11 minutes and 51 secondsfor two guys who've been at the company for a long time,

11 minutes and 54 secondsand are really good at what they do, to have a chance to take on,

11 minutes and 58 secondsuh, you know, a new responsibility, a new challenge.

12 minutes and 1 secondUh, whether it's overwhelming or not for them, I don't know.

12 minutes and 6 secondsBut, you know-- But they are doing a really great job.

12 minutes and 8 secondsThey have a lot of respect from the people in the company.

12 minutes and 10 secondsSo, it's-- it's fun to see them in that role.

12 minutes and 15 seconds...trying to get an hour... of time.

12 minutes and 22 seconds-You want this? -Hello, buddy.

12 minutes and 24 seconds-You want that? -You are an important dude!

12 minutes and 25 seconds-You got the mic! -Why are you still sitting in his place?

12 minutes and 27 secondsIt's all mixed up.

12 minutes and 30 secondsThat-- those three chairs are usually here.

12 minutes and 33 seconds\[MUSIC\]

12 minutes and 34 secondsTIM: Hi, everybody! Hello!

12 minutes and 36 secondsPlease, say hello, people here to-- Welcome this first--

12 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: At Double Fine we have to welcome Scott Campbell.

12 minutes and 40 seconds-TIM: Scott Campbell is here. -\[CLAPPING\]

12 minutes and 44 secondsTIM: Nathan "Bagel" Stapley is in the house.

12 minutes and 47 seconds-\[CLAPPING\] -TIM: Yep.

12 minutes and 49 seconds-TIM: Peter Chan is right there. -\[CLAPPING\]

12 minutes and 51 seconds-TIM: Mister Peter Chan. -\[CLAPPING\]

12 minutes and 53 secondsTIM: So, yeah, a lot of people.

12 minutes and 54 secondsOur old friends, uh, from out of town

12 minutes and 57 secondshere to, um, help me remind me what Psychonauts is,

13 minutes and 1 secondso we can start working on Grasslands.

13 minutes and 2 secondsBut, uh, we've been locked up in the Cold Room.

13 minutes and 5 secondsUh, brainstorming and talking about ideas for things,

13 minutes and 7 secondsso they can have an art jam and draw some of the first art

13 minutes and 10 secondsfor the, um, sequel to Psychonauts

13 minutes and 12 secondsthat we are going to be crowdfunding in December.

13 minutes and 15 seconds-Fig. -Fig.

13 minutes and 17 secondsRAY: I just like throwing it out there.

13 minutes and 18 seconds-Which we are going to be Figging. -RAY: Fig.

13 minutes and 19 secondsHow is it going so far, you guys?

13 minutes and 21 seconds-Pretty goo-od! -TIM: Yea-ah!

13 minutes and 23 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

13 minutes and 26 secondsTIM: So, more like high noon for, uh, Magnificent Seven.

13 minutes and 29 secondsAll these guys are coming to town.

13 minutes and 30 secondsAnd Bagel is like the really good swordsman who's drunk all the time.

13 minutes and 34 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

13 minutes and 36 secondsBAGEL: Like Jackson Pollock.

13 minutes and 37 secondsSee you, guys. Thanks for doing that!

13 minutes and 40 secondsSCOTT: Dude, I'm down to trying some markers.

13 minutes and 42 secondsAll your old markers are, like, still here from the Brütal Legend art session.

13 minutes and 45 seconds-And they are probably dry as a bone. -Probably dry as a bone!

13 minutes and 47 seconds\[SCOTT CHUCKLES\]

13 minutes and 48 secondsOh my god, what are you eating? That's crazy!

13 minutes and 49 seconds-I'm going to eat this whole donut myself. -Oh, good.

13 minutes and 51 seconds-Two napkins. -Yeah, I was going to tell you...

13 minutes and 52 seconds-...there is a box of donuts. -Going to lay it down right here.

13 minutes and 54 seconds-Just to get it ready. -\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

13 minutes and 57 secondsYeah.

13 minutes and 59 secondsThat looks muscular.

14 minutes and 0 seconds-Yeah, it is, like-- yeah. -Like a big muscle arm.

14 minutes and 5 secondsTIM: You know how I love art jams.

14 minutes and 7 secondsUh, I like seeing those guys. And for them-- they are going to--

14 minutes and 10 secondsI want them to work together.

14 minutes and 11 secondsLike, they are going to work together remotely.

14 minutes and 13 secondsBut it's great to have them all together.

14 minutes and 14 secondsJust to get all their heads in sync.

14 minutes and 15 secondsWhich I have to do, because I need some-- some more ideas.

14 minutes and 19 secondsWhen Raz arrives at the Psychonauts headquarters.

14 minutes and 21 secondsUh, the Psychonauts kind of need him more than, uh, he needs them.

14 minutes and 25 secondsThey are just not the organization they used to be.

14 minutes and 27 secondsNot the one that Raz always dreamed of joining.

14 minutes and 29 secondsHe is like: "What is up with this?"

14 minutes and 31 secondsAnd, um, he is told that his field promotion is not valid,

14 minutes and 34 secondsand if he really wants to be a Psychonaut,

14 minutes and 36 secondshe has to earn it here, at the headquarters.

14 minutes and 38 secondsAnd, um...

14 minutes and 39 secondsRAY: Is that Levi?

14 minutes and 41 secondsLevi!

14 minutes and 43 secondsI wondered if you were going to be able to join us.

14 minutes and 48 secondsTIM: And he finds out-- and Raz finds out that this guy was pushing everybody

14 minutes and 51 secondsinto researching not the normal Psychonauts powers,

14 minutes and 54 secondsbut necromancy, specifically the speaking to the dead.

14 minutes and 57 secondsWhich has been debunked by Psychonauts.

14 minutes and 59 secondsThey don't believe in it. They think it's just--

15 minutes and 0 secondsAnd also it's seen as kind of-- it has a lot of moral problems.

15 minutes and 3 secondsThey just don't like it.

15 minutes and 4 secondsYeah, turns out Gristo was pushing them,

15 minutes and 6 secondsbecause he is trying to revive the long-lost spirit of Maligula.

15 minutes and 10 seconds-\[BAGEL CHUCKLES\] -TIM: Maligula.

15 minutes and 12 secondsBAGEL: And you are going off, and you are just like debunk-- you know.

15 minutes and 14 secondsYeah, you are exploring the headquarters, and finding all these secret areas,

15 minutes and 18 secondsand going into different brains.

15 minutes and 20 secondsAnd, uh, the main thing is actually going through a list of possible minds.

15 minutes and 24 secondsSo, just, like, a million-- Just, like--

15 minutes and 25 secondsJust try to, like, think of what some of these might look like.

15 minutes and 28 secondsYou could just pick one. And then for a certain number of minutes

15 minutes and 31 secondseven just sitting around, all talking about it.

15 minutes and 33 secondsAnd then from the end of it, like, we'll see all this different kind of...

15 minutes and 35 secondsMaybe some crazy, like, mech-- like--

15 minutes and 38 secondslike, gameplay mechanic might come out of it.

15 minutes and 40 secondsAnd then all of a sudden, like, that's what you basically have.

15 minutes and 41 secondsYou are like: "Oh, wait. Actually, that mechanic is cool.

15 minutes and 43 secondsSo maybe we could, like, turn that into--

15 minutes and 46 secondswe could work that into this side of brain."

15 minutes and 47 secondsI don't know, I say bom--

15 minutes and 49 secondsAt this point, just bombard Tim with a million things,

15 minutes and 53 secondsand then have him look around and kind of start making connections

15 minutes and 56 secondsand figuring out how he wants to do it, and...

15 minutes and 59 secondsAnd then we can come back and make--

16 minutes and 1 secondyou know, make all the worlds really amazing.

16 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: Because there are so many ways you can go with the brains, you know.

16 minutes and 6 secondsLike, I learned on the first game...

16 minutes and 7 secondsPeople really liked the second half levels more than the first half levels.

16 minutes and 11 secondsThe later ones had-- each had, like, a crazy concept to the gameplay of them.

16 minutes and 15 secondsWhether it's the bubble moving through, or the bull running through,

16 minutes and 19 secondsor all these things, um, that twisted everything upside-down.

16 minutes and 23 secondsTIM: Like, the setting is suburbia, the theme is-- is paranoia,

16 minutes and 27 secondsand the, uh, twist is that relative gravity twisting the world.

16 minutes and 31 secondsRight.

16 minutes and 32 secondsJust trying to make sure each level has each one of those things, you know?

16 minutes and 35 secondsSetting, theme, twist. There you go!

16 minutes and 37 secondsAnd so, I'm realizing just, like,

16 minutes and 40 secondsa level with a cool looking theme and funny jokes will not be enough.

16 minutes and 45 secondsEach one really has to be this, um-- turning gameplay inside out, new idea.

16 minutes and 51 secondsSo I'm really bringing all of the brains I can together

16 minutes and 55 secondsto create a brain storm.

16 minutes and 57 secondsOh, that's why they call it that!

16 minutes and 59 secondsPachinko world.

17 minutes and 0 secondsLike, the entire time you are just falling down.

17 minutes and 2 secondsBuh-doo, buh-dee, buh-dee, buh-dah, buh-doo.

17 minutes and 3 secondsMm-hmm, mm-hmm.

17 minutes and 4 secondsUh, deep-fried world.

17 minutes and 6 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

17 minutes and 7 secondsI really like that.

17 minutes and 8 secondsLike, everybody is just tempura.

17 minutes and 10 seconds-Like, everyone is just delicious looking. -Just dipped.

17 minutes and 12 secondsEveryone leaves, like, a little trail of oil behind them wherever they walk.

17 minutes and 15 secondsUh, wind chime city.

17 minutes and 17 secondsThat's crazy, you just run through it the whole time: "Bwong, bling, blom."

17 minutes and 20 secondsUh, Peter Pan syndrome.

17 minutes and 22 secondsOh, a new brain!

17 minutes and 23 secondsYeah, a new brain entirely.

17 minutes and 25 seconds-SCOTT: What is Peter Pan syndrome? -Never growing up.

17 minutes and 27 secondsUh, never growing up.

17 minutes and 28 secondsEMILY: And it's like a jungle gym, Fisher-Price style world.

17 minutes and 32 secondsTIM: Hmm!

17 minutes and 33 secondsEMILY: Oh, those guys!

17 minutes and 35 secondsThey are so good at what they do!

17 minutes and 36 secondsI'm sort of the-- I feel like the impostor syndrome,

17 minutes and 40 secondswhere I'm like: "Yes, yes. I know what I'm talking about.

17 minutes and 43 secondsI don't know what I'm talking about. Okay. Hey, guys!"

17 minutes and 47 secondsAnd then, they are, like, really good at drawing.

17 minutes and 49 secondsAnd... I'm okay.

17 minutes and 51 secondsI'm okay.

17 minutes and 52 secondsSCOTT: Yes! It's been amazing having Emily.

17 minutes and 54 secondsHaving, like, a female influence back there is actually pretty wonderful.

17 minutes and 59 secondsI mean, she's, like-- Even besides that.

18 minutes and 1 secondIt doesn't matter, she has unbelievable ideas no matter what.

18 minutes and 4 secondsBut it's just great to have that dynamic kind of shifted a little bit.

18 minutes and 7 secondsIt's been really, really great.

18 minutes and 9 secondsAnd that must be tough coming into a situation

18 minutes and 12 secondswhere these-- the guys that have-- that worked on it,

18 minutes and 15 secondsand were old bros for a long period of time.

18 minutes and 17 secondsIn the beginning... we were so, so tight.

18 minutes and 20 secondsIt's hard to get into something like that.

18 minutes and 22 secondsLike, get into, like, that little-- the circle.

18 minutes and 24 secondsBut it's absolutely no problem!

18 minutes and 26 secondsBut it's cool to see their-- their passion and...

18 minutes and 30 secondsAnd they-- they know what they are doing.

18 minutes and 33 secondsAnd I'm sure they might feel a little impostor syndrome too.

18 minutes and 37 secondsBecause, I feel, a lot of artists have that.

18 minutes and 39 secondsBut they are-- they are good. They are really good!

18 minutes and 42 secondsHmm, this could be a kind of creepy, Children of the Corn style scenario,

18 minutes and 47 secondswhere, like, all the kids and all the characters are having a blast,

18 minutes and 49 secondsand all the adults are, like, trapped and being tortured.

18 minutes and 53 secondsStalker mind.

18 minutes and 55 secondsTIM: Okay, stalker mind.

18 minutes and 57 secondsThis is so creepy, I'm scared of touching it.

18 minutes and 58 secondsOr, like, it's that feeling of a stalker, like-- like:

19 minutes and 1 second"If I just-- if they just-- you know, ugh!

19 minutes and 3 secondsI know this-- I've watched all of her movies and stuff.

19 minutes and 5 secondsI feel like I know her.

19 minutes and 7 secondsAnd if she could just meet me...

19 minutes and 10 secondsshe would really-- I think we'd really be close!"

19 minutes and 12 secondsWe've all thought that way, right?

19 minutes and 15 secondsYeah, that kind of happens in real life sometimes too, where--

19 minutes and 18 secondsI don't know about you guys, but...

19 minutes and 20 secondswhen we were growing up, and going to art school,

19 minutes and 23 secondsyou put certain artists,

19 minutes and 25 secondslike, you go through your society of illustrators,

19 minutes and 27 secondsand you see these guys that you admire,

19 minutes and 29 secondsand you look up to them, right?

19 minutes and 31 secondsAnd then, um, you put them on a pedestal.

19 minutes and 34 secondsAnd then you have the opportunity to finally meet them,

19 minutes and 37 secondsand they turn out to be dicks, right?

19 minutes and 39 secondsAnd then you go: "Why did--

19 minutes and 41 seconds-You don't like their stuff anymore. -PETER: I don't like 'em anymore.

19 minutes and 42 secondsPETER: Because they are, like, totally phony.

19 minutes and 45 secondsAnd, um...

19 minutes and 48 secondsAnd you are disappointed after that.

19 minutes and 50 secondsBAGEL: Yep, you put them on a pedestal...

19 minutes and 51 secondsAnd then you stop putting people on pedestals.

19 minutes and 56 secondsTIM: Well, we killed another column.

19 minutes and 57 secondsLast column. And then we can do other stuff.

20 minutes and 0 secondsBaby's mind, you guys.

20 minutes and 1 secondIs that adorable?

20 minutes and 2 secondsIs that going to be the most adorable mind ever?

20 minutes and 5 secondsYou just see boobs everywhere.

20 minutes and 6 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

20 minutes and 9 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 12 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

20 minutes and 13 secondsSo, like Nathan's mind pretty much.

20 minutes and 15 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

20 minutes and 16 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 27 seconds\[STREET NOISES\]

20 minutes and 33 secondsPAUL: For you it's a little different now, because you don't live here anymore,

20 minutes and 36 secondsand, you know, you are doing a lot of your own stuff.

20 minutes and 39 secondsLike, do you want to be more of a part of it? Or...

20 minutes and 45 secondsUh, man, I feel that coming on.

20 minutes and 47 secondsI do feel that vibe when I'm looking around

20 minutes and 50 secondsat, like, the VR game,

20 minutes and 51 secondsand looking at what everyone's doing, I feel like:

20 minutes and 54 seconds"Oh, man. I really want to spend a lot more time with this."

20 minutes and 58 secondsAnd, like, I have that pull to come back and really be here all the time, but...

21 minutes and 4 secondsUm, but then again, when I worked--

21 minutes and 6 secondswhen I moved to New York, it was--

21 minutes and 8 secondsI felt like it did free up so much of my mind.

21 minutes and 10 secondsI was able to come up with ideas a lot--

21 minutes and 13 secondsin a lot more of a smooth environment.

21 minutes and 15 secondsSmooth way.

21 minutes and 18 secondsPretty cool.

21 minutes and 24 secondsThat's awesome.

21 minutes and 27 secondsCool.

21 minutes and 28 secondsSCOTT: Rad, I love it.

21 minutes and 31 secondsSCOTT: Every once in a while

21 minutes and 33 secondsduring this week, I would get that feeling of like:

21 minutes and 34 seconds"Oh my god, I just want to...

21 minutes and 36 secondstake this whole cast of characters and just draw them all,

21 minutes and 38 secondsyou know, like, and have a little awesome toy box, you know?

21 minutes and 41 secondsAnd I feel like-- in my mind I'm like:

21 minutes and 43 seconds"Ooo, I can't wait to work with those shapes again.

21 minutes and 45 secondsAnd I can't wait to do that with, like, renewed strength

21 minutes and 47 secondsthat I've built through the years."

21 minutes and 50 secondsI feel, like, really excited to revisit it, you know?

21 minutes and 54 secondsIf they ever want to email me things or...

21 minutes and 57 secondsOkay.

21 minutes and 58 secondsSCOTT: If they have any questions about anything.

22 minutes and 0 seconds-Okay. -SCOTT: Or any critiques.

22 minutes and 2 seconds-RAY: Bug you? -Yeah.

22 minutes and 3 secondsRAY: Okay, we are going to bug you, man.

22 minutes and 5 secondsSCOTT: Later, bud.

22 minutes and 8 secondsThanks, dude! Thanks, man!

22 minutes and 14 secondsCut.

22 minutes and 15 secondsMALENA: All right. Hey, everybody!

22 minutes and 16 seconds-Hey! -Thank you.

22 minutes and 17 secondsOur team is getting so big. This is pretty awesome.

22 minutes and 19 secondsCHAD: And we put a new sitting bench in the back room.

22 minutes and 21 secondsMALENA: Yeah, it got even bigger today!

22 minutes and 23 secondsBecause I really want to introduce Andy Alamano.

22 minutes and 25 seconds-Hi, everybody! -\[CLAPPING\]

22 minutes and 27 secondsI'm really happy to have him here.

22 minutes and 29 secondsAnd he is going to do wonderful things.

22 minutes and 32 secondsUm, he is joining the team as a producer.

22 minutes and 34 secondsUm, so we now, I think, have the most number of production people

22 minutes and 38 secondsin the company devoted to this project.

22 minutes and 40 seconds-So that... -RAY: What does that say about us?

22 minutes and 42 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

22 minutes and 43 secondsWhat does that say about our project?

22 minutes and 45 secondsI think it says that this is important.

22 minutes and 47 secondsWe are free-spirited.

22 minutes and 48 secondsAnd you-- and you are not the new guy anymore, Paul.

22 minutes and 51 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

22 minutes and 52 seconds-Since Monday. -ANDY: I have taken over.

22 minutes and 54 secondsANDY: I gotta tell you, what--

22 minutes and 56 secondsAs someone coming in, as a producer working on a game,

23 minutes and 0 secondswatching Double Fine Adventure has been a very, very eye-opening experience

23 minutes and 4 secondsabout watching a production happen in this company.

23 minutes and 9 secondsIt's been very, very informative to look at.

23 minutes and 12 secondsLike: "How did things happen? And why do you think things happened?"

23 minutes and 15 secondsThat's been very, very, uh... educational.

23 minutes and 19 secondsAnd it's perfect timing too, because production is about to start.

23 minutes and 22 secondsIt's going to start when we get back from Christmas break.

23 minutes and 27 secondsAnd we are going to be going, like, full-on production.

23 minutes and 29 secondsI'm kind of getting prepared for that.

23 minutes and 31 secondsAnd, yeah, that's partly been the process of getting started here,

23 minutes and 33 secondsgetting ramped up, getting ready to roll.

23 minutes and 35 secondsBecause we are a Psychonauts game.

23 minutes and 36 secondsWe want to make sure that we deliver this thing.

23 minutes and 38 secondsAnd it gets people like: "Oh, this is the Psychonauts I remember...

23 minutes and 40 seconds...in VR."

23 minutes and 41 secondsSo, art style is a big deal.

23 minutes and 44 secondsRAY: And then, today we have a big kind of meeting

23 minutes and 46 secondswith, um, Peter and Scott.

23 minutes and 49 secondsSort of helping, um, guide-- give us--

23 minutes and 52 secondsjust give us some pointers and feedback on sort of their process

23 minutes and 56 secondswhen it comes to the style of Psychonauts.

23 minutes and 58 secondsRAY: And we are gonna ask you questions, um, sort of about,

24 minutes and 1 seconda little bit about your approach when you were thinking about--

24 minutes and 4 secondsworking on Psychonauts.

24 minutes and 5 secondsI mean, now you guys are actually back into it again a little bit.

24 minutes and 8 secondsI have a few examples.

24 minutes and 9 secondsThis is some of what Say has been doing.

24 minutes and 11 secondsUm, she has probably taken stuff the farthest,

24 minutes and 13 secondsas far as when-- as into production work.

24 minutes and 15 secondsUm, and, um, and I don't mean to put Say on the spot,

24 minutes and 19 secondsBut this is all-- you know--

24 minutes and 21 seconds-RAY: This is her work. -TIM: This is your life.

24 minutes and 22 secondsThis is her work and, um, and--

24 minutes and 25 secondsbut you guys should feel free to sort of make any comments,

24 minutes and 28 secondsand things that you think would help push it into the Psychonauts world.

24 minutes and 32 secondsCool. This is awesome.

24 minutes and 35 secondsI would say-- Yeah, the wonkify thing.

24 minutes and 37 secondsRight?

24 minutes and 38 secondsWhat? What do you want to say about it?

24 minutes and 40 secondsI wasn't allowed-- that was-- that was just--

24 minutes and 41 secondsthat was a discontinued term on Psychonauts,

24 minutes and 43 secondsbecause I said it too much.

24 minutes and 45 secondsPETER: First off, Say, great job!

24 minutes and 48 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

24 minutes and 50 secondsI love your work!

24 minutes and 51 seconds-Yeah, these are great! -These are beautiful!

24 minutes and 53 secondsWhat?

24 minutes and 56 secondsDude, Martin is like: "Oh, I know."

24 minutes and 58 secondsHe knows. He took my class, so he knows.

25 minutes and 2 secondsHow I approach the Psychonauts world is that it's asymmetrical.

25 minutes and 8 secondsEven though you've drawn it in a cartoony way,

25 minutes and 10 secondsit's still proportionally correct.

25 minutes and 12 secondsSo, if I was going to do it, I would try to make one side,

25 minutes and 16 secondsyou know, really bigger than the other.

25 minutes and 18 secondsOr something like that.

25 minutes and 20 secondsJust to break it up.

25 minutes and 22 secondsOkay. So, if I was going to do a circle, I would put the center off a little bit.

25 minutes and 28 secondsSo, it's like a person doing a caricature of a face.

25 minutes and 32 secondsYou try to find that one feature that you can kind of embellish on.

25 minutes and 36 secondsSCOTT: There is also this story that you are telling.

25 minutes and 38 secondsI'm not sure if this is--

25 minutes and 39 secondsLike, so the story is what?

25 minutes and 40 secondsThere is, like, a psitanium here that everything is attracted to?

25 minutes and 43 secondsEverything is pulled to this point, right?

25 minutes and 45 secondsYeah, it crash-lands into that point.

25 minutes and 46 secondsSCOTT: Crash-lands?

25 minutes and 47 secondsOne thing I'd want to see is, like--

25 minutes and 48 secondsThis feels like it's, like, been just a pile.

25 minutes and 50 secondsLike everything just fell-- fell to it.

25 minutes and 52 secondsIt would be really dynamic if they all just...

25 minutes and 55 secondsLike, were pulled into it.

25 minutes and 57 secondsJust, like-- Like they all crash-landed into it.

25 minutes and 59 secondsSo, instead of, like-- like, kind of, like, this sort of thing,

26 minutes and 2 secondsthey all kind of were pulled towards this center thing.

26 minutes and 5 secondsMaybe the shape is more like this.

26 minutes and 6 secondsAnd you could see, like, this is the bus that went slamming in.

26 minutes and 9 secondsAnd this is this one that went slamming in.

26 minutes and 10 secondsAnd this is the little Volkswagen Bug that went slamming in.

26 minutes and 13 secondsYou know, and this is, like-- I don't know, whatever.

26 minutes and 16 secondsPETER: No, no, that's-- And that's-- that's brilliant.

26 minutes and 19 secondsBecause that's the thing about establishing shots.

26 minutes and 22 seconds-It should tell a story. -Yeah, yeah.

26 minutes and 25 secondsSCOTT: One thing I always hear you talk about is, like,

26 minutes and 26 secondsthe tension between shapes.

26 minutes and 28 secondsLike, the negative space too.

26 minutes and 29 seconds-Like when something-- the tension... -Almost touches.

26 minutes and 31 seconds...it almost touches, and stuff.

26 minutes and 33 secondsAnd I love, like, this boat here. It's like--

26 minutes and 35 secondsLike, everything is in this point,

26 minutes and 36 secondsbut you have certain things that are still--

26 minutes and 38 secondshave not gotten to this spot.

26 minutes and 39 secondsLike, I love that this boat is, like, just hanging on.

26 minutes and 43 seconds-Like, that's so dope, right? -Yeah.

26 minutes and 44 secondsBut it could be even more of a dynamic kind of--

26 minutes and 46 secondsBut what would make it more dynamic is that it's teetering, right?

26 minutes and 50 secondsBecause right now it's sitting nice on that cliff.

26 minutes and 53 secondsBut if it's teetering and aiming toward it

26 minutes and 56 secondsthen it looks like it's pulling in, right?

26 minutes and 59 secondsLike, do that thing.

27 minutes and 0 secondsIt should look like it's pulling that cliff down with it, right?

27 minutes and 3 secondsSo, now-- See, again, that's--

27 minutes and 5 secondsBut then you also--

27 minutes and 6 secondsthat means you also have to look at the negative space.

27 minutes and 9 secondsAnd that always enhances the positive.

27 minutes and 13 seconds-All right? -SAY: Mm-hmm.

27 minutes and 15 secondsPETER: So, that's that.

27 minutes and 15 secondsSCOTT: It was so hard to figure out what that style was.

27 minutes and 18 secondsBut now that we have that game done, we can look at it.

27 minutes and 21 secondsWe can just take that.

27 minutes and 22 secondsAnd people have-- that have played it are working on the game.

27 minutes and 25 secondsAnd-- and everyone here that have gotten just way more skilled.

27 minutes and 29 secondsWe can kind of put that all together and just make--

27 minutes and 31 secondsThe blueprint is already there.

27 minutes and 33 secondsAnd it's a real-- it's a real rough blueprint.

27 minutes and 35 secondsSo they could make it way better now.

27 minutes and 37 secondsSo, that's...

27 minutes and 38 secondsI can't wait to see what everyone does with it, so.

27 minutes and 42 secondsI'm cool with stepping back a little bit and just kind of watching what happens.

27 minutes and 46 secondsPETER: And sometimes it's fun to just create a backstory

27 minutes and 50 secondswhen you are designing it too.

27 minutes and 52 secondsLike, for example, the reason why there is a giant A-frame around this whole thing

27 minutes and 57 secondsis because the original house has a lot of roof leaks.

28 minutes and 1 secondSo then I just deliberately drew a second roof over it.

28 minutes and 5 secondsAnd then that way it forced me to come up with a different silhouette.

28 minutes and 10 secondsIt's cool. Good work, dude.

28 minutes and 13 secondsNailed it with that design.

28 minutes and 15 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

28 minutes and 16 seconds-Okay. -Gosh!

28 minutes and 20 secondsPETER: So long ago, you guys!

28 minutes and 22 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

28 minutes and 23 seconds'01.

28 minutes and 24 secondsYep.

28 minutes and 27 secondsBAGEL: '01, wow!

28 minutes and 29 seconds\[MUSIC\]

28 minutes and 34 secondsSCOTT: I think so, yeah!

28 minutes and 36 secondsI felt good about it.

28 minutes and 37 secondsAnd actually, like, Peter and I were talking about--

28 minutes and 39 secondsWhen we did that demonstration, like, it was helpful for us

28 minutes and 43 secondsto get back into the mindset of-- of what the shapes are like,

28 minutes and 46 secondsand what the rules are, like, and stuff.

28 minutes and 48 secondsAnd it felt good for us,

28 minutes and 50 secondsand so when we went back to the room, to draw,

28 minutes and 52 secondswe got even more inspired about it, so.

28 minutes and 54 secondsIt was so fun to look at that stuff.

28 minutes and 56 secondsYeah, I don't know, so.

28 minutes and 58 secondsI think it's going to be great.

29 minutes and 0 seconds\[MUSIC\]

29 minutes and 26 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

29 minutes and 28 secondsCome on, you live in the-- on this island.

29 minutes and 29 secondsI'm sure you've had a walrus on your front porch some mornings.

29 minutes and 35 secondsSerious question. Do you get walruses on your island?

29 minutes and 37 secondsNo? It's cold?

29 minutes and 40 secondsKiller whales. No walruses?

Killer whales. No walruses?
