## Episode Transcript

13 secondsANNA: ...beginnings of those ideas.

14 secondsAnd then the synesthesia, in that case, would kind of relate to the memory.

18 secondsBut I think you are right that we need something more visually...

22 secondsYeah, tying it together.

23 secondsYeah, it's not just visually, it's sort of thematically, like:

26 seconds"What ultimately is my goal, why am I in this level,

28 secondsand what am I trying to do?"

30 secondsTIM: Is it saying that senses are the keys that unlock memories...

36 secondsQuestion mark.

37 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

38 secondsIt's the end of the question.

40 seconds\[MUSIC\]

1 minute and 12 secondsTIM: We had some favorite brains that we wanted to go into.

1 minute and 15 secondsThere is a brain in a jar!

1 minute and 16 secondsIt's just without a team rolling on soon--

1 minute and 18 secondsLike, I'd like to work with a team on what they are excited about building.

1 minute and 21 secondsZak is going to be the project leader of this project.

1 minute and 24 secondsTIM: Zak has a more level designer-based approach

1 minute and 26 secondswhich, I think, makes sense.

1 minute and 27 secondsLook at this team!

1 minute and 28 secondsANDY: Psychonauts 2 is beginning to really get going.

1 minute and 30 secondsI'm fighting them off as long as I can.

1 minute and 32 secondsPAUL: Is there a point when you are going to start worrying

1 minute and 34 secondsthat there is no publisher?

1 minute and 36 secondsI'm always worried that there is no publisher.

1 minute and 41 seconds\[TIM WHISTLES\]

1 minute and 54 secondsTIM: Hi, everybody! Hello! Happy New Year!

1 minute and 56 secondsWelcome back to Double Fine!

1 minute and 58 secondsThank you for working here another year.

2 minutes and 0 secondsAt least.

2 minutes and 1 secondOne more year, one more year.

2 minutes and 3 secondsUm...

2 minutes and 4 secondsUh, Nathan, are you there?

2 minutes and 6 secondsYes.

2 minutes and 7 secondsHappy 16-year anniversary, Nathan 'Bagel' Stapley.

2 minutes and 11 secondsBAGEL: That's crazy.

2 minutes and 12 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

2 minutes and 14 secondsBAGEL: Wow! It seems like last year was just...

2 minutes and 17 secondsnot that long ago.

2 minutes and 18 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

2 minutes and 20 secondsGood one.

2 minutes and 21 secondsTIM: That's true, that's true.

2 minutes and 23 secondsSeems like it's only been 15 years, but it's been 16.

2 minutes and 26 seconds-TIM: That's crazy. -\[LAUGHTER\]

2 minutes and 27 secondsLet's talk about what's been going on this last week.

2 minutes and 29 secondsWhat's been going on in the world of business?

2 minutes and 32 secondsMr. Rice.

2 minutes and 33 secondsUh, no, we are just hopping back on all those deals.

2 minutes and 36 secondsWhich we had some conversations over the break about.

2 minutes and 38 secondsUh, mostly with Starbreeze and \*\*\*.

2 minutes and 42 secondsWhich are kind of, like, uh, leading the pack right now.

2 minutes and 45 secondsYeah, I have, like, a huge tracking doc that I've been using, uh, for publishers.

2 minutes and 50 secondsUm...

2 minutes and 52 secondsAnd, I think, at this point it was something like thirty...

2 minutes and 55 secondsthat we've pitched...

2 minutes and 58 secondsUh... yeah.

2 minutes and 59 seconds\[GREG CHUCKLES\]

3 minutes and 0 secondsGREG: With the hope that we'd get to this point where there's, like...

3 minutes and 3 secondsOne we are excited about, that's committed,

3 minutes and 5 secondsand similarly gives us this term sheet that's ready to be signed.

3 minutes and 8 secondsthat we can then kind of feel-- use to feel everybody out,

3 minutes and 12 secondsand see, you know, what's going to be best.

3 minutes and 14 secondsAnd I think the thing that eventually kind of pushed it forward was...

3 minutes and 18 secondsThe whole time the team was working on the game.

3 minutes and 20 secondsSo we kept getting more and more things that we could show to the publishers

3 minutes and 23 secondsthat got them excited.

3 minutes and 24 secondsAnd that's what really kind of sped things up.

3 minutes and 26 secondsBecause everyone was like: "Oh! This looks beautiful.

3 minutes and 28 secondsAnd you guys are making a real game, and I can see it on the screen."

3 minutes and 31 secondsSo, once we started kind of doing tour with that, um,

3 minutes and 34 secondsI think people started perking up a bit more.

3 minutes and 36 secondsGREG: So, uh, Starbreeze is working on the first draft of our deal with them.

3 minutes and 41 secondsMaybe even this week we might see something he said.

3 minutes and 43 secondsSo, just kind of watching the inbox, waiting for that, to see what comes back.

3 minutes and 47 secondsUm, but things are sounding good with them.

3 minutes and 49 secondsSo, tomorrow we should have a meeting, if you have time, with--

3 minutes and 52 secondsto talk about what we do about Starbreeze.

3 minutes and 53 secondsBecause Starbreeze was-- it was a good meeting.

3 minutes and 56 secondsThey seemed genuinely really interested.

3 minutes and 59 secondsThe main guy...

4 minutes and 1 second-He was like... -Mister Starbreeze.

4 minutes and 2 seconds-Ted Starbreeze. -Yeah.

4 minutes and 3 seconds-Yeah. -Yeah.

4 minutes and 4 secondsHe was talking about-- he kept using the term--

4 minutes and 6 secondsBut... I think--

4 minutes and 8 secondsLike, they are talking about how they are very excited,

4 minutes and 10 secondsuh, about how otherwise they wouldn't have us out.

4 minutes and 12 secondsNot that they paid for us to come out there, but...

4 minutes and 14 secondsBut he is, like, but...

4 minutes and 16 secondsJust...

4 minutes and 17 seconds"What if we spent-- is there a way to spend the money more wisely?"

4 minutes and 21 secondsAnd he kept using that term: "Spend the money more wisely."

4 minutes and 23 secondsAnd I know it's annoying,

4 minutes and 24 secondsand I'm sorry you have to go through all this.

4 minutes and 25 secondsOh, no, it's fine. I mean, I'm so used to all this.

4 minutes and 26 secondsI'd rather do it like...

4 minutes and 27 secondsTIM: I know, but I don't want you to be used to--

4 minutes and 28 secondsI want to forget what this is like.

4 minutes and 29 secondsI, I--

4 minutes and 30 secondsAt least we are having a sane conversation about it.

4 minutes and 31 secondsBut the game... Did they give us any feedback on--

4 minutes and 34 secondsThey had, how is-- Their risks were like:

4 minutes and 36 seconds"What if it was bad in the ways that Psychonauts 1 was bad?"

4 minutes and 39 secondsTo which the response is, like: "What if it wasn't?

4 minutes and 41 secondsWhat if it was good in all the ways that Psychonauts 1 was good?

4 minutes and 44 secondsAnd then, all the stuff that was bad was-- instead that stuff was also good."

4 minutes and 48 secondsWhy do I not think of this stuff?

4 minutes and 50 secondsI was just going to say: "Do you know who I fucking am?!"

4 minutes and 53 secondsZAK: They are coming out from Europe, right?

4 minutes and 54 secondsTIM: Do we have any new things to show and tell them?

4 minutes and 56 secondsZAK: Well, we have the Quarry.

4 minutes and 57 secondsZAK: You guys probably saw this on the video that we put together.

4 minutes and 59 secondsSo, this is our initial art test.

5 minutes and 1 secondWhat do you feel are the biggest challenges right now,

5 minutes and 3 secondsor the biggest challenge right now in the game development itself?

5 minutes and 6 secondsZAK: I feel really good about where we are creatively.

5 minutes and 8 secondsIn fact, I feel better about this project creatively

5 minutes and 10 secondsthan anything I've ever worked on.

5 minutes and 11 secondsIn terms of, like, knowing what it is, and knowing what we are trying to do,

5 minutes and 14 secondsand feeling good about the goals.

5 minutes and 16 secondsAnd so, I think our two biggest challenges are, like,

5 minutes and 18 secondsthe actual just boots on the ground construction of everything.

5 minutes and 21 secondsUm...

5 minutes and 22 secondsYou know, the levels in Psychonauts are incredibly creative.

5 minutes and 26 secondsAnd it's important to me that those creations are driven

5 minutes and 28 secondsfrom the teams working on them.

5 minutes and 30 secondsThat it isn't, like...

5 minutes and 31 secondsTim goes off and writes a bunch of, you know, specs of what brains should be,

5 minutes and 34 secondsand then people just go make it.

5 minutes and 35 secondsUm, they are going to be great, because the people who are working on them

5 minutes and 37 secondsalso are very creatively driven.

5 minutes and 39 secondsThey are coming up with their own ideas.

5 minutes and 40 seconds\[MUSIC\]

5 minutes and 41 secondsZAK: Sure, absolutely.

5 minutes and 43 secondsGREG: And everybody seems very excited about it over there.

5 minutes and 45 secondsSo, um, all signs point to 'Yes'.

5 minutes and 48 secondsSo, hopefully that will go well.

5 minutes and 50 secondsTIM: And I think Rhombus of Ruin, the VR game, was our proof

5 minutes and 53 secondsthat we could revisit the heart of the game again.

5 minutes and 55 seconds"Oh, it feels emotionally like Psychonauts again."

5 minutes and 57 seconds-Yeah. -TIM: Like, it feels like I'm--

5 minutes and 58 secondsTIM: I'm with those character again.

5 minutes and 59 secondsAnd they feel the same way they did before, and it--

6 minutes and 1 secondand it does pick up right after the action of the first game.

6 minutes and 3 secondsAnd so, I think that test was very successful.

6 minutes and 8 secondsTIM: Let's talk about the Rhombus of Ruin!

6 minutes and 10 secondsWhat's happening in the Rhombus of Ruin this week?

6 minutes and 12 secondsYou guys are close!

6 minutes and 13 secondsSubmitting a submission build in the middle of the month.

6 minutes and 15 secondsSo, we are trying to get all our bugs down to zero.

6 minutes and 18 secondsLast little bits, to tie it off.

6 minutes and 19 seconds-Tying it off. -CHAD: Tying it off, yeah.

6 minutes and 21 secondsCHAD: It's better than Lee. Lee would say pinch it off.

6 minutes and 23 secondsSo, I'm just going to tie it off.

6 minutes and 24 secondsTIM: Yeah, you can pinch, but then eventually it's going to leak again.

6 minutes and 26 seconds-But if you tie it off... -Tie it off...

6 minutes and 29 seconds\[TIM SCREAMS\]

6 minutes and 29 secondsGah! Aaa!

6 minutes and 30 secondsOh, whoo, okay.

6 minutes and 32 secondsSomeone sew this up.

6 minutes and 34 secondsOkay, that's how we end projects around here.

6 minutes and 36 secondsCHAD: Originally, we were shooting for being at this point in...

6 minutes and 39 secondsthe end of October.

6 minutes and 41 secondsANDY: I think it's come out to about three more months?

6 minutes and 43 secondsOf additional time.

6 minutes and 44 secondsWhich is helping us.

6 minutes and 45 secondsBecause I think we would have been able to ship the game,

6 minutes and 47 secondsbut it would have been... rough,

6 minutes and 49 secondsum, buggy.

6 minutes and 50 secondsBecause we got the extra time, we were able to go:

6 minutes and 53 seconds"Okay, we don't have to do that."

6 minutes and 55 secondsAnyway, so this is my current last remaining A bug.

6 minutes and 59 secondsIt's a critical bug.

7 minutes and 0 secondsUm, because it means the player cannot finish the level,

7 minutes and 3 secondsif, uh, this happens.

7 minutes and 4 secondsAnd...

7 minutes and 6 secondsEssentially, this is in the train.

7 minutes and 8 secondsI'm about to complete the train car puzzle.

7 minutes and 11 seconds\[MUSIC\]

7 minutes and 12 secondsAnd the bug is that once this happens,

7 minutes and 15 secondsif I jump back to this yellow fish,

7 minutes and 19 secondsthe game should be...

7 minutes and 21 seconds...stuck at that point.

7 minutes and 22 secondsI shouldn't be able to actually go anywhere else

7 minutes and 24 secondsand I cannot finish the game.

7 minutes and 26 secondsLet's see what happens.

7 minutes and 29 secondsPAUL: O-oh.

7 minutes and 31 secondsSILVIO: This is a crash.

7 minutes and 32 secondsThis is not the bug that they are talking about.

7 minutes and 34 secondsSo now I have found a different bug that I need to fix.

7 minutes and 37 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

7 minutes and 38 secondsThanks, guys.

7 minutes and 41 seconds\[SIGHS\]

7 minutes and 43 secondsANDY: And Sony's been great, they are telling us:

7 minutes and 45 seconds"You know, make the game the best you can,

7 minutes and 46 secondsand don't worry too much about the submission dates.

7 minutes and 48 secondsLet's try to hold to it, but..."

7 minutes and 49 secondsThey are flexible.

7 minutes and 51 secondsWe are not.

7 minutes and 52 secondsPsychonauts 2 isn't.

7 minutes and 53 secondsWe need to get those people over to Psychonauts 2.

7 minutes and 55 secondsWe need to start working on that game.

7 minutes and 56 secondsAnd I know that!

7 minutes and 57 secondsWorking at a place like Double Fine

7 minutes and 59 secondswhere there is a lot of people sharing talent...

8 minutes and 0 secondsBecause just, like, I was talking about expectations.

8 minutes and 3 secondsWhen you think you are going to be done with the game,

8 minutes and 5 secondsthere is another team of people who-- their expectation is that:

8 minutes and 8 seconds"I'm going to get that person, and that person, and that person

8 minutes and 10 secondsto start working for me at this point.

8 minutes and 12 secondsCHAD: When Emily eventually rolled off the team

8 minutes and 14 secondsand was pulled on to help with that,

8 minutes and 16 secondsit was really kind of tough,

8 minutes and 17 secondsbecause, you know, some of her soul is in GVR.

8 minutes and 19 secondsAnd her daily contributions and comments were valued.

8 minutes and 23 secondsWith Ray leaving and her kind of being pulled onto other stuff,

8 minutes and 25 secondsit was kind of, like, a little of that soul being pulled away.

8 minutes and 27 secondsYou want to kind of keep that going.

8 minutes and 29 secondsThey really wanted to get Rusty, the character artist, going.

8 minutes and 32 secondsThey needed to start getting character models going.

8 minutes and 33 secondsSo, I kind of was able to say:

8 minutes and 35 seconds"Okay, animators, artists are going to get ready for Psychonauts 2

8 minutes and 38 secondsfirst thing in January."

8 minutes and 39 secondsAnd we've been able to hold to that which is really good.

8 minutes and 41 secondsThat isn't to say I haven't had to go to Ray or Rusty a couple of times and say:

8 minutes and 45 seconds"Uh... I need you to fix a bug."

8 minutes and 47 secondsAnd they've been able to.

8 minutes and 48 secondsAnd the Psychonauts 2 team understands that.

8 minutes and 50 seconds"I need-- I need them to fix one thing."

8 minutes and 52 seconds"Oh, okay, they can fix one thing."

8 minutes and 53 secondsSo, there has definitely been some bargaining

8 minutes and 55 secondswith the Psychonauts 2 team.

8 minutes and 57 secondsI can imagine they are not exactly thrilled.

9 minutes and 0 secondsI know they need programmers.

9 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

9 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: I feel like we've been in first gear for a long time that...

9 minutes and 5 secondsI'm looking forward to when we hit pedal to the metal.

9 minutes and 8 secondsSecond gear?

9 minutes and 9 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

9 minutes and 11 secondsMost of the tech work we are doing will be stuff that's used by other projects.

9 minutes and 14 secondsSo, in that sense,

9 minutes and 16 secondsour project itself has been pre-production for a lot of those.

9 minutes and 19 secondsIf we hadn't done our project,

9 minutes and 20 secondsthey would be spending an extra eight months,

9 minutes and 22 secondsan extra year getting their engine ramped up.

9 minutes and 25 secondsSo, it hasn't been too bad in that sense.

9 minutes and 27 secondsYou know, it's studiowide knowledge that we have.

9 minutes and 29 secondsLike I mentioned, Aaron gave a talk on some of his optimization techniques.

9 minutes and 33 secondsAnd for him it was really a chance to take charge

9 minutes and 35 secondsas sort of optimization guru on it.

9 minutes and 38 secondsHello, everyone! I'm Aaron Jacobs.

9 minutes and 40 secondsAnd I'm here to talk to you about how to squeeze performance

9 minutes and 42 secondsout of your VR games.

9 minutes and 43 secondsFirst, just a brief bit about me.

9 minutes and 45 seconds\[MUSIC\]

9 minutes and 46 secondsAnd...

9 minutes and 48 secondsyou know, for him to make strides in that, make progress not only as himself,

9 minutes and 51 secondsbut then to see him actually go and present it at a technical conference,

9 minutes and 55 secondsand show what he had learned...

9 minutes and 57 secondswas, you know, heartwarming to see.

9 minutes and 59 secondsI would like to thank Chad Dawson, our Project Lead,

10 minutes and 2 secondsfor encouraging me to do this talk in the first place.

10 minutes and 5 secondsAnd with that, I'll open it up to questions.

10 minutes and 7 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

10 minutes and 10 seconds\[MUSIC\]

10 minutes and 12 secondsPAUL: And how does the team feel to be...

10 minutes and 14 seconds...moving off of that project onto Psychonauts 2?

10 minutes and 16 secondsDo you feel like there is, um...

10 minutes and 18 secondslike, fresh blood, you are getting Duncan.

10 minutes and 19 secondsYou said...

10 minutes and 20 seconds"You feel like you've got fresh blood to dunk in?"

10 minutes and 22 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

10 minutes and 24 secondsLike a Dracula eating a cruller?

10 minutes and 26 seconds\[CHUCKLES\]

10 minutes and 28 secondsFresh blood.

10 minutes and 29 seconds\[MUSIC\]

10 minutes and 31 secondsTIM: There is a lot of Unreal expertise that's going to come off of GVR

10 minutes and 34 secondsthat will help a lot with, uh, Psychonauts 2.

10 minutes and 37 secondsHopefully they are not sick of the Psychonauts.

10 minutes and 39 secondsHopefully no one is sick of the Psychonauts.

10 minutes and 41 seconds\[MUSIC\]

10 minutes and 58 secondsBRIAN: I'm not worried about the hail.

10 minutes and 59 secondsI'm worried about the chill.

11 minutes and 2 secondsI sit right there.

11 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: I want to first start off by having a big round of applause

11 minutes and 6 secondsfor the Rhombus of Ruin team.

11 minutes and 8 secondsCongratulations on shipping that awesome game today.

11 minutes and 11 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

11 minutes and 12 secondsTIM: Amazing.

11 minutes and 15 secondsUh, it's out in the wild.

11 minutes and 16 secondsUm...

11 minutes and 17 secondsI've been getting some lovely, lovely people tweeting about it to me,

11 minutes and 20 secondssaying lovely things.

11 minutes and 21 secondsI think it's really fun...

11 minutes and 22 seconds...to go back to the Psychonauts universe.

11 minutes and 24 seconds-You forget how much you miss that. -Oh my god, absolutely!

11 minutes and 26 secondsEspecially, like, seeing the characters all around you again,

11 minutes and 28 secondsand even just seeing the UI,

11 minutes and 30 secondsand just the abstract, wonky art design.

11 minutes and 32 secondsLike, I think there is a thrill in looking around

11 minutes and 34 secondsjust on the, you know, art of the environment,

11 minutes and 36 seconds-...and seeing these characters up-close. -Interacting with the characters for sure!

11 minutes and 39 secondsSPAFF: Um, but people are saying awesome stuff.

11 minutes and 40 secondsI brought some quotes to read out for you.

11 minutes and 43 seconds"For fans of the franchise or VR owners hungry for something new,

11 minutes and 46 secondsthis is one of the best experiences you'll find on the headset.

11 minutes and 49 secondsIt's nothing short of incredible,

11 minutes and 50 secondsand it has me counting the months until Psychonauts 2.

11 minutes and 53 secondsThat's awesome. Was that Chad? Who was that?

11 minutes and 55 secondsIt's really nice to see something great,

11 minutes and 57 secondsand seeing Psychonauts back out in the world after all these years.

12 minutes and 0 secondsAll right.

12 minutes and 1 secondGood update.

12 minutes and 2 secondsUh...

12 minutes and 3 secondsWas that your last update on GVR?

12 minutes and 5 secondsCHAD: Probably is our last update, yeah.

12 minutes and 6 secondsTIM: We'll check in next week, just to see if anything happened.

12 minutes and 8 secondsTIM: Uh, let's talk about Psychonauts 2!

12 minutes and 10 seconds-TIM: What is going on with Psychonauts 2? -What is going on with Psychonauts 2?

12 minutes and 12 secondsUh, so...

12 minutes and 13 secondsWe are trying to get our shit together to do actual sprint planning,

12 minutes and 19 secondsand move into doing real production work.

12 minutes and 21 secondsSo, we are hoping to kick off a couple of levels this month.

12 minutes and 23 secondsAnd that works with the Lead Tech somehow?

12 minutes and 25 seconds-ZAK: No. -Uh, it barely doesn't work.

12 minutes and 27 seconds-It barely doesn't... -ZAK: It only...

12 minutes and 29 secondsOnly barely doesn't work.

12 minutes and 31 secondsWe are going to need to figure out, like,

12 minutes and 32 secondshow many character designs we can get from you

12 minutes and 35 secondsover, like, you know, a set period of time.

12 minutes and 37 secondsOkay, I just want to make sure that before it does go final,

12 minutes and 40 secondsI get a chance to make some comments.

12 minutes and 42 secondsBecause I remember with Rhom-- with GVR,

12 minutes and 45 secondsI had made some comments on Sasha and Milla,

12 minutes and 47 secondsand certain things, I was like:

12 minutes and 48 seconds"Yeah, I wish we could turn the joints to be the same distance..."

12 minutes and 52 secondsAnd things like that.

12 minutes and 53 secondsBut they said: "Oh, we are not on them. We are still working on Raz."

12 minutes and 56 secondsAnd then I hadn't heard about it,

12 minutes and 58 secondsand then... the game was done.

13 minutes and 0 seconds-\[GAVIN CHUCKLES\] -SCOTT: So, if we could, like...

13 minutes and 1 secondAside from that, I don't know--

13 minutes and 3 secondsJust something, if we could work into, uh...

13 minutes and 5 secondsbeing able to kind of check out some of that stuff, you know.

13 minutes and 7 secondsTUCKER: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

13 minutes and 8 secondsYeah, we'll try to figure out how to--

13 minutes and 10 secondsWhere in the pipeline for the characters we can put that

13 minutes and 13 secondsto make sure it always goes in front of you.

13 minutes and 15 secondsOkay, yeah, for sure, sounds-- That sounds good.

13 minutes and 18 secondsZAK: And Scott is starting to tear through all the character concepts.

13 minutes and 22 secondsRUSTY: Hey, Scott Campbell!

13 minutes and 23 seconds-TIM: Hey, Scott Campbell! -ZAK: Oh, your Christmas tree is still up!

13 minutes and 25 secondsTIM: Merry Christmas! So is mine, so is mine.

13 minutes and 27 secondsSCOTT: Are those trees on your sweater? What's on your sweater?

13 minutes and 30 seconds-ZAK: It's little people. -TIM: It does look like a little, uh...

13 minutes and 32 secondsIt's little people. It's, like, little tourist people.

13 minutes and 34 secondsThey've all got, like, suitcases, and cameras.

13 minutes and 35 secondsThis makes me feel inspired. I like being in this room with you, guys.

13 minutes and 38 seconds-\[TIM CHUCKLES\] -This is cool.

13 minutes and 39 secondsZAK: Uh, okay. So, we only got, like, 20 minutes now, so.

13 minutes and 42 secondsThere is so, so, so much to talk about.

13 minutes and 44 seconds-(Zak was late.) -Why would you say that?

13 minutes and 46 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

13 minutes and 48 secondsZAK: Next up, the interns.

13 minutes and 50 secondsThere is a lot of really good stuff here.

13 minutes and 52 secondsI love these ones.

13 minutes and 55 secondsWhoa, what is that outfit? It looks almost Spanish or, like, Chilean.

13 minutes and 59 secondsWhoa! Look at funky tattoos girl!

14 minutes and 1 secondTIM: She is really-- I like-- She is really, uh, scrappy.

14 minutes and 4 secondsZAK: Yeah, okay.

14 minutes and 5 secondsI love-- I love all these guys. These are so great.

14 minutes and 7 secondsTIM: I love the B guy with his crazy tattoo.

14 minutes and 9 secondsGlasses lady. The F girl is cool.

14 minutes and 12 secondsWhoa.

14 minutes and 14 secondsTIM: But it's been awesome having Scott.

14 minutes and 15 secondsBecause I'm really bad at, like, keeping in touch with people.

14 minutes and 17 secondsI'm like: "Oh, this has really gotten me to talk to Scott every week on Skype."

14 minutes and 21 secondsAnd having him, uh, create the characters for the game...

14 minutes and 25 secondsIt's just one way we don't have to worry about matching Psychonauts 1.

14 minutes and 28 secondsLike, when you are doing a sequel, you are like:

14 minutes and 29 seconds"Will this have the same feeling and, um, and be as good as the first game?"

14 minutes and 33 secondsAnd I can feel, like...

14 minutes and 34 secondsJust as soon as we saw the first characters,

14 minutes and 36 secondsand see, uh, Frazie being modeled by Rusty,

14 minutes and 39 secondsI'm just like: "Yes! This feels really good!

14 minutes and 40 secondsThis feels exactly like what the characters should look like."

14 minutes and 42 secondsAnd, um...

14 minutes and 44 secondsAnd-- and that's just from having Scott on the project.

14 minutes and 47 secondsAnd Rusty.

14 minutes and 48 secondsZAK: That one's good.

14 minutes and 49 secondsTIM: I like-- Do you know how there is a big--

14 minutes and 51 secondsLike, in Latin culture there is a big Morrissey following.

14 minutes and 54 seconds-Have you ever seen that? -Yes, there is.

14 minutes and 55 secondsZAK: That actually would be a pretty good one there.

14 minutes and 58 secondsTIM: I'm-- I feel like we are really lucky in how much time we've got from Scott.

15 minutes and 1 secondBecause I didn't think we were going to have that much.

15 minutes and 2 secondsI thought we were just going to have him do some consulting.

15 minutes and 4 secondsBut we just keep asking for more of his time,

15 minutes and 6 secondsand he keeps giving it to us, and...

15 minutes and 7 secondsI think he enjoys it.

15 minutes and 10 secondsHe told me he did.

15 minutes and 11 secondsHe could be lying.

15 minutes and 13 secondsBut he is doing good work, so I'm not going to question it.

15 minutes and 15 secondsSo, uh... So, a couple of things.

15 minutes and 17 secondsWe should figure out how many interns we are going to make for the game.

15 minutes and 21 secondsBecause otherwise--

15 minutes and 22 secondsBecause if we just pick all the ones we like, we'll have thirty.

15 minutes and 25 seconds-I was just going to say thirty. -\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

15 minutes and 26 secondsSo, that's great that we are thinking the same.

15 minutes and 28 secondsUh, we've already got thirty other characters.

15 minutes and 29 secondsSo, I think...

15 minutes and 31 secondsI would think four.

15 minutes and 32 seconds-Four is enough to have... -\[TIM SIGHS\]

15 minutes and 33 secondsWhat?

15 minutes and 34 seconds-It's not thirty. -It's not thirty.

15 minutes and 36 secondsIt's-- but it's four. Which is a bigger number than three.

15 minutes and 39 secondsAnd if one of, uh, his sisters joins.

15 minutes and 42 seconds-That gives you a nice number. -You just want her to show up?

15 minutes and 44 secondsWell, like, if... The dad talks you into the thing.

15 minutes and 47 seconds-So, yeah. -Yeah, that'd be a sidequest.

15 minutes and 49 secondsWe'll do a sidequest for her, we'll do a sidequest.

15 minutes and 51 secondsI'm just saying she shows up in a cutscene.

15 minutes and 52 secondsLike, I'm interested in that there is this thing,

15 minutes and 54 secondswhere you are, like, you are trying to: "Okay, I got them off the front lawn,

15 minutes and 56 secondsthey are off in the campsite, they are never going to come around again,

15 minutes and 58 secondsI don't want anyone to know that I'm related to these guys."

16 minutes and 0 secondsAnd then the sister shows up and says:

16 minutes and 1 second"Dad said you have to put me in the intern program!"

16 minutes and 3 secondsAnd she is just one of the interns from then on, you know?

16 minutes and 6 secondsSCOTT: Who are you talking about?

16 minutes and 7 secondsRaz's sister.

16 minutes and 9 secondsYeah, the, like-- the twelve-year-old sister.

16 minutes and 11 secondsYep, yep...

16 minutes and 13 secondsExcept we are trying to establish

16 minutes and 14 secondsthat the intern program is actually hard to get into,

16 minutes and 16 secondsand Raz is less qualified than everybody else.

16 minutes and 18 secondsAnd he is kind of, like...

16 minutes and 19 secondsAnd then his sister just rolls in and does it.

16 minutes and 21 seconds-Yeah, yeah, yeah. -Seems like it kind of undermines...

16 minutes and 22 secondsWell, they turn-- They turn that on him.

16 minutes and 23 secondsThey are like: "Oh, you think you can just get her..."

16 minutes and 26 secondsI think you just get the joke, and then you send her home...

16 minutes and 28 secondsLike, you get the embarrassment of her showing up, and trying to get in...

16 minutes and 30 secondsAnd, I think-- Anyway.

16 minutes and 31 seconds-Point being... -It's a writing problem.

16 minutes and 33 seconds-\[ZAK CHUCKLES\] -Writer will fix it.

16 minutes and 35 secondsSo, whether or not we have the sister, how many...

16 minutes and 37 secondsHow many of the interns are we trying to get?

16 minutes and 39 seconds-I would say four. -Okay.

16 minutes and 41 secondsTwo boys, two girls.

16 minutes and 42 secondsYou don't want to do six, so you can cut two later?

16 minutes and 44 seconds\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

16 minutes and 45 secondsThink of long-term, Zak.

16 minutes and 47 seconds-Sounds good. -\[TIM LAUGHS\]

16 minutes and 49 secondsYou want to do six, so we can cut two later?

16 minutes and 50 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

16 minutes and 51 secondsSCOTT: I'm cool with that.

16 minutes and 52 seconds-ZAK: All right. -\[TIM LAUGHS\]

16 minutes and 54 secondsAll right. Three boys, three girls.

16 minutes and 56 secondsIt's a little different, you know.

16 minutes and 58 seconds(He is right there.)

17 minutes and 1 second\[LAUGHS SILENTLY\]

17 minutes and 4 secondsRUSTY: But, I mean, it is...

17 minutes and 5 secondsIt's nice, because Tim will, you know, just say:

17 minutes and 7 seconds"I want the pie in the sky!"

17 minutes and 10 secondsAnd Zak is like: "Well, it'd be nice,

17 minutes and 12 secondsbut, you know, the realities are that I need this and this.

17 minutes and 15 secondsAnd I maybe don't need that other stuff."

17 minutes and 17 secondsBut Tim's gotten really good at that now too, so.

17 minutes and 21 secondsPAUL: Zak is reeling him in a little bit.

17 minutes and 23 seconds-What's that? -PAUL: Zak is reeling him in a little bit.

17 minutes and 25 secondsOh, he reeled himself in even before Zak.

17 minutes and 28 seconds-His family reeled him in. -\[CHUCKLING\]

17 minutes and 31 secondsI mean, it's true. It's, like...

17 minutes and 33 secondsHe wants to go see his wife and child.

17 minutes and 36 secondsHe doesn't want to stay here until 3 AM.

17 minutes and 39 secondsEven on Broken Age, I'm not sure if he was super excited

17 minutes and 42 secondsto actually be in charge of the whole project.

17 minutes and 45 secondsBut I-- I think what he really wants to do is write...

17 minutes and 49 secondsWrite the game.

17 minutes and 52 secondsMake sure the acting is good, make sure the animation is good,

17 minutes and 55 secondsthe character design is good, and stuff like that.

17 minutes and 58 secondsAnd, uh, almost down to the brain list.

18 minutes and 0 secondsSo, if you have a version of that that we are going to go over,

18 minutes and 2 secondsthen we should be set...

18 minutes and 3 seconds-..to start kicking off levels in earnest. -I mailed it to you.

18 minutes and 5 seconds-ZAK: What's that? -TIM: I mailed it to you.

18 minutes and 6 seconds-Did you already? -TIM: Yeah.

18 minutes and 7 seconds-When did that happen? I didn't see. -Like, about ten minutes ago.

18 minutes and 8 secondsOh, okay. Just during the meeting--

18 minutes and 10 secondsOh, I did that sometime before the break-- before the break.

18 minutes and 12 secondsZAK: Uh, yeah, I think that's all the big stuff that's going on.

18 minutes and 15 secondsSo, it's exciting times.

18 minutes and 16 seconds-TIM: And James Marion. -And James Marion!

18 minutes and 18 seconds-TIM: James, where are you? -\[CLAPPING\]

18 minutes and 19 secondsTIM: Where are you?

18 minutes and 21 secondsWould you-- Oh, I see!

18 minutes and 23 secondsYou think by standing-- by sitting behind the post

18 minutes and 26 secondsthat I won't see you, and I won't call you.

18 minutes and 28 secondsWould you please stand up, so people can see who you are.

18 minutes and 30 secondsAnd can I ask you a few questions?

18 minutes and 31 secondsBecause I don't pay attention during job interviews

18 minutes and 33 secondsand this is the only way I actually get to--

18 minutes and 35 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

18 minutes and 37 secondsTIM: What-- what role might you play on which team?

18 minutes and 41 secondsTIM: Awesome.

18 minutes and 43 secondsJAMES: I know when I was being interviewed they were pretty upfront about, like...

18 minutes and 46 secondsThey were cautiously optimistic about me,

18 minutes and 49 secondsbecause I had so little experience with actual 3D level design.

18 minutes and 51 secondsBut also no one makes 3D platformers.

18 minutes and 53 secondsSo, the pool of people who have made 3D platformers is pretty small.

18 minutes and 56 secondsI was-- I was, like, pretty excited about it.

18 minutes and 58 secondsBut I wanted to hear what everybody else had to say.

18 minutes and 59 secondsAnd everybody else was super like:

19 minutes and 0 seconds"Thumbs up, that guy is great, we should hire him."

19 minutes and 2 secondsBecause he didn't have much-- any level design experience.

19 minutes and 4 secondsHe doesn't have any 3D experience.

19 minutes and 7 seconds-But... -Or levels.

19 minutes and 8 secondsYeah, but he's come-- He is cheap, he is junior.

19 minutes and 10 secondsYou gotta-- You gotta take chances...

19 minutes and 12 seconds-...on people. -Okay.

19 minutes and 14 secondsI'll-- I'll fire him if he is bad.

19 minutes and 16 secondsYeah.

19 minutes and 17 secondsI'll, you know, if I have to do that, I'll just be like:

19 minutes and 19 seconds"Didn't work out, dude. Sorry."

19 minutes and 21 seconds-It'll be good. -Yeah?

19 minutes and 23 seconds-It'll be good. -Okay.

19 minutes and 25 secondsJAMES: So, what I understand about the original game is that...

19 minutes and 28 secondsthe level designers...

19 minutes and 29 secondsit didn't go great.

19 minutes and 30 secondsUm, so, they eventually got fired halfway through the project.

19 minutes and 33 secondsWhich I saw on Wikipedia, like, a day after I got hired.

19 minutes and 37 secondsI was like: "Oh, no! This is a terrible omen."

19 minutes and 39 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

19 minutes and 40 seconds-Let's party! -Do it.

19 minutes and 42 secondsTIM: All right, come to the kitchen for cake,

19 minutes and 44 secondsif you are into that kind of thing.

19 minutes and 49 secondsZAK: But then, my hope is by next week, in earnest,

19 minutes and 52 secondswe could kick you two off, uh, on-- on a brain.

19 minutes and 57 seconds-Have you met Jeremy? -JAMES: Hi, Jeremy!

19 minutes and 58 seconds-\[CHUCKLING\] -ZAK: Have you met James?

20 minutes and 0 secondsYes, and so you guys will be doing the--

20 minutes and 2 secondsthe first-- the first brain.

20 minutes and 4 secondsAnd unless there is a real solid reason to pick one,

20 minutes and 7 secondslike, we can talk to you, guys, and let you figure out

20 minutes and 9 secondswhich one sounds the most interesting to you, guys.

20 minutes and 11 secondsUm...

20 minutes and 12 secondsFor-- for next week, I think, what would be nice,

20 minutes and 14 secondsum, when we kick off the levels, is for you to be the concept art--

20 minutes and 17 secondssupport for these two guys as a level team.

20 minutes and 19 secondsOkay.

20 minutes and 20 secondsI have a meeting with Tim later today.

20 minutes and 21 secondsWe are going to go over the preliminary brain list.

20 minutes and 23 secondsMy hope is there is at least one thing in there

20 minutes and 25 secondsthat is, like, solid enough that we are like:

20 minutes and 26 seconds"Yes! That can be the first brain that we can do."

20 minutes and 28 secondsUm...

20 minutes and 30 secondsAnd then you guys can continue to work on the HQ stuff.

20 minutes and 32 seconds-RYAN: Mm-hmm. -Um, and do that.

20 minutes and 33 secondsBecause we have to-- we have to figure out...

20 minutes and 35 secondsWe have to figure out how do we further kick off the hub.

20 minutes and 39 seconds-Because it's so big. -RYAN: It's huge, yeah.

20 minutes and 40 secondsMaking a whole-- layout of the whole hub.

20 minutes and 42 secondsSo, um...

20 minutes and 43 secondsWe just need to sit down and figure out how we are going to handle that process.

20 minutes and 45 secondsLike, do we do a couple of different chunks

20 minutes and 47 secondsand push it through the workflow all the way.

20 minutes and 48 secondsRYAN: Um, one of the problems with the hub is that it's very, very big.

20 minutes and 51 secondsAnd I'm pretty sure that there is stuff

20 minutes and 52 secondsthat we are not even thinking about right now,

20 minutes and 53 secondsthat we don't have a place for,

20 minutes and 54 secondsthat we'll need to figure out how to incorporate as well.

20 minutes and 56 secondsRYAN: That's something I'm really excited about.

20 minutes and 58 secondsLike, just kind of feeling out

20 minutes and 59 secondswhat that history ends up being in the world.

21 minutes and 4 secondsEMILY: What if it was the camp before the camp?

21 minutes and 6 secondsOh, oh! Like, there is an old, uh, kid's camp...

21 minutes and 9 seconds-EMILY: Yeah. -...over here?

21 minutes and 10 secondsThat could be creepy.

21 minutes and 11 secondsBut it's all run-down.

21 minutes and 13 secondsLike, wall full of hand prints.

21 minutes and 14 seconds-Moaning Caverns Psychic Summer Camp. -RYAN: You've moved on.

21 minutes and 18 seconds-You've grown up. -You've grown up!

21 minutes and 19 seconds-It's a symbol for growing up. -You can't go home again.

21 minutes and 21 seconds-No. -A little sign over there.

21 minutes and 22 secondsWhat's the most important stuff to go over?

21 minutes and 24 secondsUh...

21 minutes and 26 seconds-This stuff probably. -\[TIM MAKES AN EFFORT GRUNT\]

21 minutes and 27 secondsZAK: We gotta get people kicked off on something soon.

21 minutes and 29 secondsWhat do you think is the biggest change...

21 minutes and 30 secondsThe biggest change in this is the idea of reusing the Psychic Seven.

21 minutes and 35 seconds-ZAK: Yeah. -The Stump People.

21 minutes and 36 secondsZAK: Yeah, as the...

21 minutes and 38 seconds-The Stump People. -The Stump People.

21 minutes and 40 secondsThat's a Troma film.

21 minutes and 41 secondsThese are the old stumps, actually.

21 minutes and 43 secondsWe were looking at Psychonauts because the stumps in the--

21 minutes and 45 secondsin the campgrounds had some old Psychonauts.

21 minutes and 49 secondsAnd we want to make sure that we fit the story with them.

21 minutes and 52 secondsTIM: Because we talked about referencing--

21 minutes and 53 secondsAt first it was like: "Well, we could reuse--

21 minutes and 55 secondsWe could use Cassiopeia.

21 minutes and 56 seconds-TIM: And we could use Lucrecia." -ZAK: Yeah.

21 minutes and 58 secondsZAK: But once you are...

21 minutes and 59 seconds-ZAK: Once you are using two of them... -TIM: I feel like you gotta use them all.

22 minutes and 1 secondZAK: Laws of symmetry.

22 minutes and 3 secondsAnd also, I feel like it's a nice--

22 minutes and 5 secondsIt could be a nice way of telling the stories of the back-- history,

22 minutes and 7 secondswith, you know, each one of them having some piece of it.

22 minutes and 10 secondsThere is an early idea from the first game that Lili just touches on in one cutscene.

22 minutes and 13 secondsWhich is that the Psychonauts aren't what they used to be.

22 minutes and 15 secondsAnd that's more about how they've, you know...

22 minutes and 17 secondsThey were brought about as a peacekeeping force.

22 minutes and 20 secondsAnd now they have achieved a lot of that peace, and now people are like:

22 minutes and 22 seconds"Ah, who needs the soldiers of that war anymore?"

22 minutes and 24 secondsAnd the Psychonauts are kind of underfunded now.

22 minutes and 27 secondsUm, but this is more about how the Psychonauts get in that position.

22 minutes and 30 secondsIs this what they really were meant to be?

22 minutes and 32 secondsAnd that Ford, um...

22 minutes and 35 secondsmaybe when he founded it had a different vision for that.

22 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: Maybe that gathering of people is

22 minutes and 39 secondsin each brain that you can go into, and they remember that time.

22 minutes and 41 secondsThey have a different perspective on that time.

22 minutes and 43 seconds-The memories of... -Mm-hmm.

22 minutes and 44 secondsYeah.

22 minutes and 45 secondsTIM: I like it, uh...

22 minutes and 46 secondsAnd it helps a lot.

22 minutes and 48 secondsAnd it helps bring the Psychic Seven into a real purposeful group.

22 minutes and 53 secondsAnd it lets Psychonauts 2 have this story that is about something.

22 minutes and 56 secondsInstead of just, like, the further adventures of the spies.

22 minutes and 59 secondsSo, okay. Did you get to read through this?

23 minutes and 1 second-Uh, I got through, like, half of it, so. -Okay.

23 minutes and 3 secondsThe reason you can tell this is not final is

23 minutes and 5 secondsthat there is no, still, um, Deep Fried world in it.

23 minutes and 9 seconds-I have not found a place for Deep Fried. -ZAK: Uh... DLC.

23 minutes and 12 secondsZAK: The D stands for Deep.

23 minutes and 13 secondsDeep. Deep Fried, okay.

23 minutes and 15 seconds-Cool. -ZAK: Yep.

23 minutes and 16 seconds-ZAK: Kentucky Fried... -For the DLC plan...

23 minutes and 17 secondsSay, uh...

23 minutes and 18 secondsEverything-- knock on wood-- with Starbreeze.

23 minutes and 20 seconds-ZAK: Yep. -Is this the brain plan?

23 minutes and 23 secondsOr were some of these going to come out for DLC?

23 minutes and 25 secondsNo.

23 minutes and 26 seconds-Okay, DLC is addition to this. -In addition, yes.

23 minutes and 28 seconds-Oh, man, fat and happy... -But, uh, well...

23 minutes and 31 secondsBut this is fat and happy in a different way.

23 minutes and 33 secondsSo, we'll talk about how we might be able to do some of this.

23 minutes and 36 seconds-Wait, what? -It's good. No, uh...

23 minutes and 38 secondsYou still think even with the budget of Starbreeze we should cut them down?

23 minutes and 40 secondsNo, it's just-- it's just that there is a lot of two-state brains.

23 minutes and 42 secondsWhich is awesome.

23 minutes and 43 secondsWhere you go into them, and then you go into them again.

23 minutes and 45 secondsWhich is cool.

23 minutes and 45 secondsBut once it becomes massive state changes within the level,

23 minutes and 48 secondsor you do visit and revisit, and it is different each time.

23 minutes and 51 secondsUm, and all the Ford fragments are so vastly different

23 minutes and 54 secondsin all of their directions.

23 minutes and 56 secondsThey are all, like, mini brains now.

23 minutes and 57 secondsSo, once we actually figure out production math on those things,

24 minutes and 2 secondsI think it becomes bigger than just eleven brains.

24 minutes and 5 secondsZAK: The initial list of brain ideas we had,

24 minutes and 7 secondsum, packed in maybe a few too many ideas.

24 minutes and 10 secondsWe had a very long series of brainstorms,

24 minutes and 12 secondsand then the brain list we boiled down to often was, um,

24 minutes and 15 secondsone or two things, or three things, or four things in a row.

24 minutes and 19 secondsUh, so, we've got a lot of two-state brains.

24 minutes and 21 secondsWe've got a lot of brains that, like, start off this way and end up that way.

24 minutes and 23 secondsOr the person has kind of multiple mental conditions.

24 minutes and 25 secondsI think some of that stuff is going to have to get clarified out

24 minutes and 27 secondsfor it to be sort of, uh,

24 minutes and 29 secondsstrong, singular direction on some of these.

24 minutes and 32 secondsZAK: It's been twelve for a while.

24 minutes and 33 secondsJust design them all, and then cut the worst one.

24 minutes and 35 seconds\[ZAK CHUCKLES\]

24 minutes and 36 secondsZAK: So, I think the next thing for this is to go through it with the team.

24 minutes and 39 secondsAnd then figure out what brain we would want to do... next.

24 minutes and 43 seconds-We've got, like, Bee Hive... -JAMES: Okay.

24 minutes and 46 seconds-Which is the Hermit's Hive. -RYAN: Yeah.

24 minutes and 47 secondsThe Lisa Frank Posh, which is Boolean values.

24 minutes and 50 seconds-JAMES: What's the third one in that set? -LEVI: And... Pickled Promotion.

24 minutes and 53 secondsWhich is the Synesthesia.

24 minutes and 54 seconds-Yeah, the Brain in a Jar. -JAMES: Oh, jeez.

24 minutes and 56 secondsBrain in a Jar, Bee Hive, or the Lisa Frank psychopath.

24 minutes and 59 secondsI thought that the idea for Fullbear is that when he is in the brain in the jar,

25 minutes and 3 secondshe is just being crushed under the weight of his own thoughts.

25 minutes and 5 seconds-Everything is kind of... -Or anything else we come up with!

25 minutes and 7 secondsLike, he's been isolated for years, and years.

25 minutes and 9 secondsHe is a brain in a jar, and he's been alone with his thoughts,

25 minutes and 11 secondsand what is that like?

25 minutes and 11 secondsHowever you want to design it.

25 minutes and 13 seconds-It's all super-- -Okay.

25 minutes and 14 secondsIt's up to you guys to figure it out.

25 minutes and 15 secondsZAK: It's about building out these level teams.

25 minutes and 17 secondsAnd having those level teams be

25 minutes and 19 secondsfunctional creative units that work really well together.

25 minutes and 21 secondsAnd for that they need to do creative work together.

25 minutes and 24 secondsUm, and we could just hand them ideas and say:

25 minutes and 26 seconds"Here is what you are building. Go build it."

25 minutes and 28 secondsBut I don't think that would develop them as a team as well.

25 minutes and 31 secondsAnd ultimately they wouldn't feel as close to the work.

25 minutes and 33 secondsWe should have a beard team and a mustache team.

25 minutes and 35 secondsThat's weird.

25 minutes and 36 secondsZAK: With that in mind, it's really just making sure

25 minutes and 37 secondsthey don't go too far off the rails,

25 minutes and 39 secondsor they don't do something that is coming in, you know,

25 minutes and 41 secondsway below the quality bar, or I don't feel they can execute on.

25 minutes and 44 secondsZAK: Um, and then the Bee Hive, I think.

25 minutes and 47 secondsLEVI: Bee Hive seems pretty straightforward.

25 minutes and 48 secondsIt seems straightforward.

25 minutes and 49 secondsWhen you guys get done with it, it would not be straightforward.

25 minutes and 51 secondsIt would be whatever crazy--

25 minutes and 52 secondswhatever crazy thing you want to do with it.

25 minutes and 54 secondsJAMES: Uh, it's definitely not the type of environment I'm used to.

25 minutes and 57 secondsBut I did have some sense that the process would be like:

26 minutes and 0 seconds"Here is where the game is at the beginning of the level.

26 minutes and 2 secondsHere is where it needs to get to.

26 minutes and 3 secondsFill in that blank."

26 minutes and 4 secondsSo, yeah.

26 minutes and 5 secondsYeah, I feel it's Lisa Frank right now, because it...

26 minutes and 9 secondsis a little more grounded for me.

26 minutes and 10 secondsZAK: Uh, Lisa Frank was also a thing that, uh, Emily was super excited about.

26 minutes and 14 secondsJEREMY: Oh, is she not-- Is she not going to be on this one?

26 minutes and 16 secondsZAK: We were going to have her do the hub.

26 minutes and 18 seconds-ZAK: We could swip-swap. -JEREMY: Oh.

26 minutes and 19 secondsJEREMY: She would fucking love it.

26 minutes and 22 secondsJAMES: Oh, then let's do the synesthesia one.

26 minutes and 23 secondsJEREMY: Okay.

26 minutes and 25 seconds-No. -I don't want to take that away from her.

26 minutes and 26 seconds-That's-- that's fine. -JEREMY: I think...

26 minutes and 27 secondsJEREMY: It would be really good if she did it though.

26 minutes and 31 secondsOkay, does that mean you really guys-- really want to change that?

26 minutes and 35 secondsJEREMY: I think it'd be better, if she worked on that level.

26 minutes and 37 secondsUh, how do you feel about that, Levi?

26 minutes and 39 secondsSure.

26 minutes and 41 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

26 minutes and 42 secondsExcitement, everyone!

26 minutes and 44 seconds-All the levels are going to be great. -Have conviction!

26 minutes and 46 secondsAnd they are all going to be great to work on.

26 minutes and 47 secondsZAK: So, you guys want to do the Brain in a Jar?

26 minutes and 49 seconds-JAMES: Yep. -ZAK: Sure about that?

26 minutes and 51 seconds-Damn it! -Locked!

26 minutes and 53 secondsFinal answer.

26 minutes and 54 seconds-RYAN: Oh, that's totally fine. -ZAK: All right, all right.

26 minutes and 55 seconds-ZAK: Brain in a Jar, all right. -RYAN: I'm working on a cool hub!

26 minutes and 57 secondsZAK: Done. Done.

27 minutes and 1 secondGEOFF: ...meeting with Peter Chan in the afternoon.

27 minutes and 3 secondsUh, input tasks for Jeremy in Hansoft.

27 minutes and 6 secondsUh, and then worked on the...

27 minutes and 9 secondsum, setting up sound volumes for Camden,

27 minutes and 12 secondsand had a meeting with him about sound inside of the interior pretty area.

27 minutes and 20 seconds-ZAK: (Do you need me? Do you need me?) -I was just sneaking out.

27 minutes and 22 seconds-No, it's okay. -ZAK: Oh, okay.

27 minutes and 24 seconds-A tense moment in here? -No! Not at all.

27 minutes and 26 secondsI forgot that you guys were in there with Starbreeze,

27 minutes and 28 secondsbecause we were doing stand-ups.

27 minutes and 29 secondsDo you need-- Is that over or do you need me?

27 minutes and 30 seconds-GREG: It's over, it's over. -ZAK: Oh, okay.

27 minutes and 31 secondsZAK: All right.

27 minutes and 32 secondsUh, Starbreeze wants to do it.

27 minutes and 34 seconds-ZAK: They are what-- they are into it? -They are into it.

27 minutes and 35 secondsBo signed off on it.

27 minutes and 37 secondsZAK: Oh, all right, cool.

27 minutes and 38 secondsSo, have they already, like, run the numbers and all that stuff?

27 minutes and 41 secondsTIM: There are some final numbers between me and Greg...

27 minutes and 42 secondsGREG: ...we are trying to figure out.

27 minutes and 43 secondsZAK: That's big. That's big, all right.

27 minutes and 45 seconds\[MUSIC\]

27 minutes and 48 secondsJAMES: So...

27 minutes and 49 secondsHelmut Fullbear is one of the original Psychonauts.

27 minutes and 52 secondsUm, he died in this great battle.

27 minutes and 55 secondsYou should probably read the general story doc,

27 minutes and 57 secondsbecause it kind of outlines what this battle is,

27 minutes and 59 secondsand why that's happening.

28 minutes and 0 secondsBecause that's kind of the story of Psychonauts 2.

28 minutes and 2 secondsBut, basically, he died in this great battle,

28 minutes and 4 secondsbut his brain was put on a sort of life support.

28 minutes and 7 secondsWhere it was supposed to be turned off, but it wasn't.

28 minutes and 8 secondsAnd he's been kind of stewing in his own juices for, like, 20 years.

28 minutes and 12 seconds\[MUSIC\]

28 minutes and 13 secondsSo, this level is made up of those ideas he's been coming up with

28 minutes and 17 secondsfor the last 20 years. He's been trying to remember how he died.

28 minutes and 19 secondsJAMES: You are walking through these different copies of the same battle,

28 minutes and 22 secondsuh, as he's been trying to figure that out.

28 minutes and 24 secondsLEVI: Oversized viking, uh, going into battle.

28 minutes and 28 secondsKind of like the idea--

28 minutes and 29 secondsthat it wasn't actually like that in his battle, but...

28 minutes and 32 secondsuh, just a spun story about it.

28 minutes and 35 secondsJAMES: And then, when we get to Helmut, we see

28 minutes and 36 secondsthat he's been in this constant state of frustration and, uh...

28 minutes and 39 seconds...pain for years.

28 minutes and 42 secondsAnd Raz suggests that maybe we'd be able to fix that

28 minutes and 44 secondsif we put him in a body.

28 minutes and 45 secondsAnd we just happen to have a body lying around.

28 minutes and 47 secondsUm...

28 minutes and 48 secondsSo, when we do that what happens is...

28 minutes and 52 secondshe is overwhelmed by the sensations, because he's gone so long without them.

28 minutes and 55 secondsAnd it's Raz's job to put those senses in order.

28 minutes and 58 secondsYeah, I actually think the initial brainstorm was really strong.

29 minutes and 1 secondWhat was cool is that we had this idea

29 minutes and 3 secondsof this, like, big viking ship over a wasteland, kind of floating there,

29 minutes and 7 secondsand this really strong visual.

29 minutes and 9 secondsUm, but the gameplay part was less strong.

29 minutes and 11 secondsSo we spent the last week kind of going over that again, and again, and again,

29 minutes and 14 secondsuntil we felt really confident about that.

29 minutes and 16 seconds\[MUSIC\]

29 minutes and 17 secondsZAK: Uh...

29 minutes and 19 secondsDid you ever hire anybody that's, like, super weird fanboy?

29 minutes and 21 seconds-Was there anybody that's strange? -Just you, only you.

29 minutes and 24 seconds-Just me? -\[CHUCKLING\]

29 minutes and 26 seconds-You hide it really well. -I know.

29 minutes and 27 seconds-But it's great. -Yeah, it is.

29 minutes and 29 secondsJAMES: Uh, yeah, I was a big Tim Schafer fan for a long time.

29 minutes and 33 secondsUm, and I remember making, like, a fool out of myself two years ago at GDC.

29 minutes and 36 secondsBecause I, like, went up to him and was like: "Hey, I'm a big fan!"

29 minutes and 38 secondsAnd he was like: "Thanks for playing."

29 minutes and 41 secondsAnd then, like, turned away.

29 minutes and 42 secondsI was like: "Oh, no! I've put myself in a category forever now."

29 minutes and 45 seconds-Afterwards or before? -JAMES: Afterwards.

29 minutes and 47 secondsI was, um, embarrassing. But you don't remember it, so it's fine.

29 minutes and 50 secondsTIM: Oh! Oh, oh, wait! Wait, wait, wait.

29 minutes and 53 seconds-JAMES: No, you don't remember it. -JEREMY: I have a story too.

29 minutes and 54 seconds-JAMES: I wasn't that embarrassing. -TIM: Uh-oh!

29 minutes and 56 secondsI never met you, but...

29 minutes and 58 secondswhen I went to Comic-Con one year, you were sitting behind me on the plane.

30 minutes and 1 second-JAMES: That's exciting! -\[JEREMY LAUGHS\]

30 minutes and 4 secondsIt was the Southwest flight, it was one of the ones where you pick your own seats.

30 minutes and 6 secondsAnd I guess, like... That was, like, the one...

30 minutes and 8 seconds-And I picked the seat behind you? -Yeah.

30 minutes and 10 secondsJAMES: So, like, being in a meeting room with him and, like,

30 minutes and 13 secondspitching him story ideas, and talking through

30 minutes and 15 secondshow the level is going to go, is, like, totally nuts.

30 minutes and 17 secondsUm...

30 minutes and 18 secondsBut I guess I'm taking, like, a fake it till you make it kind of approach,

30 minutes and 21 secondswhere I have to at least give off the impression

30 minutes and 24 secondsthat I'm confident in my ideas, or else they are never going to work.

30 minutes and 27 secondsSo, yeah.

30 minutes and 29 secondsJAMES: Yeah, I do, I'm glad. He seems into the viking stuff.

30 minutes and 32 secondsIt was cool we got to pitch a lot of it too already...

30 minutes and 35 seconds-Yeah. -JEREMY: ...before next Tuesday

30 minutes and 37 secondsUm...

30 minutes and 39 secondsWe just have to make sure if Zak doesn't like something,

30 minutes and 40 secondswe can't be like: "Well, Tim liked it."

30 minutes and 42 seconds-\[CHUCKLING\] -JAMES: "So..."

30 minutes and 44 seconds-We already talked to Mom. -\[JAMES LAUGHS\]

30 minutes and 47 secondsYeah.

30 minutes and 48 secondsNo, I mean--

30 minutes and 49 secondsDon't tell Tim I called him Mom!

30 minutes and 51 seconds\[LEVI LAUGHS\]

30 minutes and 52 seconds-That's all you ever call him. -I just picked one at random.

30 minutes and 54 secondsWhenever the cameras are off that's all you ever say.

30 minutes and 55 secondsLEVI: Yeah...

30 minutes and 56 seconds-JAMES: "Zak, can we get Mom in here?" -\[LEVI LAUGHS\]

30 minutes and 59 secondsJAMES: We also have Anna Kipnis on the team,

31 minutes and 1 seconduh, who'll be kind of giving us programming support.

31 minutes and 4 secondsYeah, Anna will be helping with brainstorming too.

31 minutes and 6 secondsUh, she is super smart, and she is the only person on the team

31 minutes and 9 secondswho was there for Psychonauts 1.

31 minutes and 10 secondsSo she is a great resource for that.

31 minutes and 12 secondsThe idea of, like, what does the boat actually represent here?

31 minutes and 17 secondsANNA: And maybe he is--

31 minutes and 18 secondsLike, maybe if you climb to the crow's nest, you--

31 minutes and 21 secondsLike, he is trying to remember this memory.

31 minutes and 25 secondsAnd it's almost like trying to find land.

31 minutes and 27 secondsUm, so, yesterday was mostly just meetings and interviews.

31 minutes and 31 secondsUh, didn't do a lot for levels.

31 minutes and 32 secondsBut today is all levels, all day.

31 minutes and 34 secondsWith, uh, the level presentations.

31 minutes and 36 secondsUm, and then I'm going to prioritize for the rest of the week

31 minutes and 38 secondsputting together that high-level direction sheet for brains.

31 minutes and 43 secondsUm...

31 minutes and 45 secondsHow is it going to go?

31 minutes and 46 secondsTIM: Let me ask you some interview questions.

31 minutes and 47 seconds-TIM: Are you nervous? -Yeah.

31 minutes and 49 secondsDid you ever see that movie, uh... with Eminem?

31 minutes and 52 seconds-8 Mile? -JAMES: Yep.

31 minutes and 55 secondsOr that song where he is like: "What if you have one shot?"

31 minutes and 59 secondsCould you do the lyrics right now?

32 minutes and 1 second\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

32 minutes and 2 secondsJAMES: Interesting, yeah, I mean, Tim is, like, a dreamer, right?

32 minutes and 5 secondsI even noticed that in the Double Fine Adventure.

32 minutes and 7 secondsTim...

32 minutes and 9 secondsthinks about things without, uh...

32 minutes and 11 secondsa ton of concern regarding their-- like, how possible they are.

32 minutes and 15 secondsWhich, I think, is really good for a Creative Director.

32 minutes and 17 secondsSo it's probably great that Zak is here to be like:

32 minutes and 19 seconds"Nope, not going to work."

32 minutes and 21 secondsUm...

32 minutes and 22 secondsI-- I would assume Zak is probably good enough, uh...

32 minutes and 26 secondssmart enough to know that some impossible things are probably possible.

32 minutes and 31 secondsOh, yeah, that's-- Anna brought that one in.

32 minutes and 34 secondsThere it is!

32 minutes and 35 secondsOh, that's not going to be enough for all of us.

32 minutes and 37 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

32 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: It's still brewing, so I had to jump into the thingamajigy.

32 minutes and 42 secondsDid you guys all want coffee? Or something? Do you want one?

32 minutes and 45 secondsTIM: Will it freak you out if I stand here?

32 minutes and 47 secondsZAK: This whole thing is going to be so exciting,

32 minutes and 48 secondsyou are just going to wake up, you are not going to need coffee.

32 minutes and 50 secondsYou are like: "Boom!"

32 minutes and 52 secondsI'm only standing up, because of my back.

32 minutes and 54 secondsI hope you-- I'm not about to run out the door.

32 minutes and 56 seconds-No, it's a power move. -\[TIM LAUGHS\]

32 minutes and 57 secondsTIM: It's a power move to psyche you out!

32 minutes and 58 secondsI was sitting at my desk earlier, and I was almost, uh, dead.

33 minutes and 1 secondI had slept on my parents' guest room bed, and my back threw out.

33 minutes and 5 secondsIs that what you are talking about?

33 minutes and 7 secondsYeah, that's heroic.

33 minutes and 9 secondsOkay.

33 minutes and 11 seconds-Hi, everyone! -ZAK: Hello!

33 minutes and 12 secondsWelcome to Helmut's Harmonarium!

33 minutes and 15 secondsThe level starts in this little cave of memories

33 minutes and 17 secondsthat is constructed of discarded memories that Helmut has created.

33 minutes and 20 secondsUm...

33 minutes and 22 secondsUh, it's devoid of energy. It's kind of eerie.

33 minutes and 25 secondsAnd as Raz moves, he creates little bubbles of light and energy.

33 minutes and 27 secondsUm, because he is the first, kind of, impulse this brain has had in decades.

33 minutes and 31 secondsUh, he sees Helmut's ship floating high above a spire in the distance.

33 minutes and 35 secondsUh, and out in front of him is a wasteland of discarded memories.

33 minutes and 38 secondsUh, you can hear the faint sound

33 minutes and 39 secondsof muffled singing emanating from the ship.

33 minutes and 42 secondsUm, and needing Helmut's permission to move his brain in the real world,

33 minutes and 45 secondshe hops down into the wasteland in front of him,

33 minutes and 47 secondsuh, losing sight of the ship among the piles of abandoned ideas.

33 minutes and 52 secondsRaz takes the brain out of the jar,

33 minutes and 55 secondsuh, somehow gets it to Nick, and inserts it in Nick's body.

34 minutes and 0 secondsLEVI: Uh, returning to the--

34 minutes and 2 secondsto, uh, Helmut's brain, once in the body,

34 minutes and 4 secondsthings have gone a little crazy, in the opposite direction, so...

34 minutes and 8 secondsMany of the objects that you saw in the wasteland below are now

34 minutes and 12 secondsfloating up into the storm, spiraling around the ship itself,

34 minutes and 17 secondsand, uh, a lot of very obvious platforming has now,

34 minutes and 22 secondsuh, strewn across the level.

34 minutes and 24 secondsYou mean a lot of really awesome platforming?

34 minutes and 26 seconds-Yes. -\[JAMES LAUGHS\]

34 minutes and 28 secondsANNA: So, this is where you get more and more closer

34 minutes and 31 secondsto, like, some of the memories that, um, Helmut actually has of this final battle.

34 minutes and 35 secondsIf I may. So, the idea is that he has this actual memory, that's lost, of the battle.

34 minutes and 40 secondsBut he remembers senses from it, right?

34 minutes and 41 secondsSo, say, that battle happened in a cold place,

34 minutes and 43 secondshe remembers that it was cold.

34 minutes and 45 secondsAnd then this island is created just from that sense memory.

34 minutes and 47 secondsSo it might be a glacier. Something like that.

34 minutes and 49 secondsSo, you go to the sense islands,

34 minutes and 50 secondsyou free, uh, the Helmuts, that should be manning the ship,

34 minutes and 52 secondsfrom those phantom Nicks.

34 minutes and 55 secondsAnd the senses are sorted.

34 minutes and 57 secondsSo, the Helmuts are once again manning the ship.

34 minutes and 59 secondsHelmut is able to control the senses, finally able to finish his song.

35 minutes and 2 secondsThen Helmut, now in control of Nick's body,

35 minutes and 4 secondsruns out of the mailroom in search of Ford.

35 minutes and 8 secondsThe end.

35 minutes and 9 seconds(That was a very good timing with the song.)

35 minutes and 11 seconds\[ANNA CHUCKLES\]

35 minutes and 12 secondsUm, I have a bunch of different feedback.

35 minutes and 14 secondsDo you guys want to go? Who wants to go?

35 minutes and 15 seconds-RYAN: Go ahead and start. -ZAK: All right.

35 minutes and 18 secondsThe islands are the memory that are going to form the thing

35 minutes and 20 secondsthat he is trying to put back together.

35 minutes and 21 secondsMaybe that was the intention?

35 minutes and 23 secondsUm, but it does feel like a set of different stumbling blocks,

35 minutes and 26 secondsand not: "You come into the level, you understand his problem,

35 minutes and 30 secondsand then, at the end of the level, you've resolved that thing."

35 minutes and 32 secondsIt feels like as you describe it,

35 minutes and 34 secondsit doesn't set up that chain of conflicts in a way that I--

35 minutes and 38 secondsthat players necessarily, I think, will all hook together

35 minutes and 41 secondson a moment by moment basis.

35 minutes and 42 secondsBecause it does feel like a whole bunch of ideas.

35 minutes and 44 secondsAnd none of those ideas have been discarded.

35 minutes and 46 secondsThey've all just been put together into one idea.

35 minutes and 48 secondsThat is what I generally call the buffet kind of design.

35 minutes and 51 secondsWhere it's like: "We just had a bunch of stuff we like,

35 minutes and 53 secondsso we put it all on the plate."

35 minutes and 54 secondsUm, and I think that will result

35 minutes and 56 secondsin it being overscoped and confusing in the game.

36 minutes and 0 secondsIt's not, like I said, it's just not a slam dunk.

36 minutes and 4 seconds-GEOFF: Cool. -All right.

36 minutes and 5 secondsRYAN: There are some really great ideas here.

36 minutes and 6 seconds-GEOFF: Yep. -ZAK: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

36 minutes and 8 secondsZAK: Uh...

36 minutes and 9 secondsSo, this sounds to me like another couple of days on concept development?

36 minutes and 13 seconds-RYAN: Yeah. -ZAK: And then circle back in...

36 minutes and 15 secondsZAK: ...and try to get, like, that actual kind of, like,

36 minutes and 17 secondsquest and conflict stuff nailed down

36 minutes and 18 secondsbefore going on to-- to actual whitebox and layout.

36 minutes and 21 secondsUm, what's today? Tuesday?

36 minutes and 24 secondsHow much time do you guys want?

36 minutes and 29 secondsIs that coffee made?

36 minutes and 32 seconds-\[GEOFF LAUGHS\] -I bet the coffee is made.

36 minutes and 38 seconds-Zak said a lot. -\[PAUL CHUCKLES\]

36 minutes and 40 secondsTIM: Unless I could help out with Helmut

36 minutes and 41 secondsby coming up with a better story of who he is.

36 minutes and 44 secondsBecause I feel like I didn't give them-- I didn't give them much to work with.

36 minutes and 47 secondsLike: "Helmut, he is a viking-ish looking dude."

36 minutes and 49 seconds-\[TIM CHUCKLES\] -ZAK: Yeah.

36 minutes and 50 secondsI mean, they filled in the holes.

36 minutes and 52 secondsIt seems like they know a lot-- Well, maybe they still are.

36 minutes and 54 secondsIt didn't-- we didn't want them feeling like they were trying to

36 minutes and 56 secondsfulfill an order that we were making.

36 minutes and 58 secondsZAK: Well, I think, what I want to avoid is

36 minutes and 59 secondsthem... feeling like they are taking stabs into the dark

37 minutes and 3 secondsuntil they hit the thing that you want.

37 minutes and 6 secondsWhich is not how that works, but it's the feeling people can get.

37 minutes and 9 secondsWhere they are like: "I'm just throwing stuff out there,

37 minutes and 11 secondsuntil somebody--

37 minutes and 12 secondsthe dude who wants a thing and can't articulate it says: "Yes."

37 minutes and 15 secondsTrying to take stabs in the dark until you smile.

37 minutes and 19 secondsSo...

37 minutes and 22 secondsJAMES: Accidentally shows Helmut

37 minutes and 24 secondsthat, you know, new impulses are good.

37 minutes and 26 secondsHelmut says, like: "Raz, do this new impulse thing to this other thing."

37 minutes and 29 secondsRaz does it.

37 minutes and 30 secondsAnd then whatever Raz does to make that thing better

37 minutes and 33 secondsgets washed away immediately because of the state of the world.

37 minutes and 35 secondsAnd that's what causes Helmut to say, like:

37 minutes and 37 seconds"Oh, I need more. I need my own senses."

37 minutes and 38 secondsIt's, like, um, maybe a random association, but...

37 minutes and 41 secondsWhen I lived alone for a long time...

37 minutes and 43 secondsI was single for a long time, you guys.

37 minutes and 45 seconds-What?! -Yeah.

37 minutes and 46 secondsI had this-- there was a period where I was just living by myself,

37 minutes and 48 secondsand I was in crunch mode, and just-- and I, um...

37 minutes and 50 secondsI set something down, or I moved something in my house.

37 minutes and 52 secondsAnd then I realized that I had set it down,

37 minutes and 54 secondslike, a week before, and it was-- it hadn't moved at all.

37 minutes and 57 secondsAnd I realized, like:

37 minutes and 58 seconds"Nothing in this apartment is ever going to move, unless I move it."

38 minutes and 1 secondBecause I never have anyone ever.

38 minutes and 3 secondsLike: "I live here alone."

38 minutes and 5 seconds-JEREMY: That's amazing! -"This is weird."

38 minutes and 6 seconds-JEREMY: That's super cool. -Like, things are getting dust on them.

38 minutes and 8 secondsIn temporary-- Like, I set something down temporarily

38 minutes and 10 secondsand it now has dust on it in that shape, like: "Oh, god!"

38 minutes and 12 secondsAnd I eventually-- I got a cleaning service.

38 minutes and 15 secondsAnd they came, and they started messing things up.

38 minutes and 16 secondsAnd putting things in the wrong place, and making new piles and stuff.

38 minutes and 19 secondsBut I loved it, because, I was like: "Oh my god!

38 minutes and 20 secondsThere is chaotic input into my world!"

38 minutes and 23 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

38 minutes and 24 secondsIt's, like-- It's just, like--

38 minutes and 25 secondsLike, you know that scene in Misery

38 minutes and 26 secondswhen she knows the glass animal is turned the wrong way,

38 minutes and 28 secondsand that's how she knows he's been getting out of the bedroom.

38 minutes and 30 seconds-Yeah. -That... my apartment was that.

38 minutes and 32 secondsIt was like Misery.

38 minutes and 34 secondsThat's like Helmut's brain.

38 minutes and 35 secondsIt's, like, he's been the only person touching stuff.

38 minutes and 37 secondsNothing has moved except for when he did it.

38 minutes and 39 secondsYou come in, and you move his glass animal penguin...

38 minutes and 42 seconds-JEREMY: Yeah. -And he is like...

38 minutes and 43 secondsHe gets enraged at first, but then he is like:

38 minutes and 46 seconds"This changes everything."

38 minutes and 47 secondsLike, this cha-- this gives me, like, ten thousand more ideas all of a sudden.

38 minutes and 49 secondsJEREMY: That seems awesome!

38 minutes and 50 secondsLike, if he has this whole battle, like,

38 minutes and 52 secondskind of placed out on the deck of the ship.

38 minutes and 55 seconds-And then he realizes this is better. -\[JAMES SIGHS\]

38 minutes and 57 secondsAnd Helmut, he puts it back together wrong.

38 minutes and 59 secondsYou did a heavy sigh... Okay.

39 minutes and 2 secondsJAMES: No. So, let me explain what we liked about the statue idea.

39 minutes and 4 secondsEven though it might be half-baked, right?

39 minutes and 6 secondsIs...

39 minutes and 7 secondsIt was, like, a very physical--

39 minutes and 8 secondsJAMES: I had a dream last night that I got into a fist fight with Tim.

39 minutes and 11 seconds\[MUSIC\]

39 minutes and 14 secondsI'm sorry, Tim.

39 minutes and 16 seconds\[MUSIC\]

39 minutes and 20 secondsLEVI: Man, you got a killer cocktail.

39 minutes and 22 secondsWhat's that?

39 minutes and 23 secondsPhilz, LaCroix...

39 minutes and 27 secondsUh-oh.

39 minutes and 32 secondsThat would be on-brand!

39 minutes and 35 secondsKee is here just so as we are describing things happening in the hub...

39 minutes and 38 seconds-He is like: "Oh, no." -He is like: "I'm not programming that."

39 minutes and 39 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

39 minutes and 41 seconds"Nope."

39 minutes and 42 secondsRYAN: "No, you can't have that feature you are asking for."

39 minutes and 44 secondsRYAN: For our hub quest flow check-in...

39 minutes and 47 secondsUm, because we know a lot more about the hub

39 minutes and 49 secondsthan the other brain levels and such,

39 minutes and 50 secondsthis is much more about trying to establish, uh,

39 minutes and 53 secondshow the quest in Act 1 and 2 works inside the hub.

39 minutes and 57 secondsUh, so, as you are going towards the Atrium,

39 minutes and 59 secondsthere is only one path available from the Lobby to the Atrium.

40 minutes and 1 secondAnd on the way to the Atrium Raz encounters a group of surly interns

40 minutes and 4 secondswho are less than impressed by him.

40 minutes and 5 secondsAnd we cut to: "Raz has been deposited in a storage closet in his skivvies,

40 minutes and 9 secondsa tank top and shorts.

40 minutes and 10 seconds-Wow. -GEOFF: Uh, and...

40 minutes and 12 secondsGEOFF: There is only really one way out of this closet.

40 minutes and 14 secondsBut we get a action path that leads Raz up to the second floor.

40 minutes and 20 secondsUh, and in this place we are going to introduce updrafts and ladders.

40 minutes and 23 secondsSo, it's sort of, like, Raz is crawling through the vents at this point.

40 minutes and 27 secondsOr you are, like, on the outside, and you are, like, doing an action path

40 minutes and 30 secondsaround the superstructure of the base.

40 minutes and 31 secondsAnd you've got, like, a nice vista or something.

40 minutes and 33 seconds-But just-- especially because-- -\[TIM LAUGHS\]

40 minutes and 35 secondsWhen you talked about being outside, you just made me laugh,

40 minutes and 37 secondsbecause he would have to walk on a ledge outside a window.

40 minutes and 40 secondsAnd, like, the wind is blowing, and you are like:

40 minutes and 42 seconds"I have dreamed of coming to this place all my life."

40 minutes and 44 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

40 minutes and 45 seconds"And within ten minutes of being here, I'm naked on a ledge.

40 minutes and 48 secondsAnd I'm ruining everything."

40 minutes and 50 secondsI think that's really funny.

40 minutes and 51 secondsZAK: That's a-- I feel like that's a Naked Gun scene somewhere.

40 minutes and 54 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -Yeah, if we do it right.

40 minutes and 56 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

40 minutes and 58 seconds\[MUSIC\]

41 minutes and 1 secondZAK: Um, and then, the high elevation area,

41 minutes and 3 secondswhich is the one you are going to do,

41 minutes and 4 secondsand, uh, luckily, the thing that is interesting about that is...

41 minutes and 8 secondsthe brain we are kicking off is the hub brain that is in that area.

41 minutes and 10 seconds-TIM: What a coinkydink! -So, we already know that stuff.

41 minutes and 12 seconds\[MUSIC\]

41 minutes and 23 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

41 minutes and 25 secondsA man and his passions!

41 minutes and 27 seconds\[MUSIC\]

41 minutes and 38 secondsGREG: What are you guys watching?

41 minutes and 39 secondsThe Full House opening.

41 minutes and 40 seconds-GREG: Why? -Why not?

41 minutes and 44 secondsANNA: Who is that guy, seriously?

41 minutes and 46 secondsThat's Danny Tanner! In this version, I guess.

41 minutes and 48 secondsDUNCAN: I have a suspicion that we all need to go outside.

41 minutes and 51 seconds-ANNA: It's Bob Saget? -JEREMY: Bob Saget.

41 minutes and 53 seconds-We have set it up out there. -Oh!

41 minutes and 55 secondsTIM: I don't know.

41 minutes and 56 secondsI mean, there are-- Denise is all: "Pop the thing!"

41 minutes and 59 secondsLEVI: What is going on?

42 minutes and 0 seconds\[INDISTINCT CHATTERING\]

42 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: I'm going to stand on this thing.

42 minutes and 4 seconds\[TIM GRUNTS\]

42 minutes and 6 secondsPAUL: Do you want a glass?

42 minutes and 8 secondsTIM: Uh...

42 minutes and 9 secondsGreg, do you want to-- Why don't you--

42 minutes and 11 secondsDo you have any-- Do you have it on you?

42 minutes and 13 seconds-GREG: I do! -TIM: Show it.

42 minutes and 14 secondsTIM: We want to share with you

42 minutes and 15 secondsour finalized, fully executed contract with Starbreeze Studios.

42 minutes and 19 seconds\[CHEERING AND CLAPPING\]

42 minutes and 21 secondsTIM: That's awesome news! Cheers, cheers, cheers!

42 minutes and 24 secondsYeah.

42 minutes and 25 secondsIt's been signed by them-- Wait, show the part where they signed it.

42 minutes and 27 secondsThat's important.

42 minutes and 28 seconds\[GREG CHUCKLES\]

42 minutes and 29 seconds-We have two signatures now. -TIM: That's awesome.

42 minutes and 32 seconds\[CHEERING\]

42 minutes and 34 secondsNow, we were already making this game,

42 minutes and 36 secondsand nothing was going to stop us from making this game.

42 minutes and 37 secondsBut there is a substantial amount of money tied to that contract

42 minutes and 39 secondsthat is going to help us make this game the way we want to make it.

42 minutes and 42 secondsIt's really great, so I want to toast.

42 minutes and 44 secondsAnd thank, first, Greg Rice for doing all of that amazing bizdev on that.

42 minutes and 47 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

42 minutes and 48 secondsGREG: We went out to dinner with them after, um...

42 minutes and 51 secondsto this, like, uh, you know, we had, like, steak restaurant dinner or whatever.

42 minutes and 56 secondsAnd... it was, uh...

42 minutes and 59 secondsI don't know if this is, like, because my body could just--

43 minutes and 1 secondlike, was just so worn down from all of the pitching,

43 minutes and 4 secondsand all the stress, and it, like, finally felt, like, a bit of relief.

43 minutes and 7 secondsBut... after that dinner, like, the next morning I got food poisoning,

43 minutes and 10 secondsand puked for the first time in, like, 25 years.

43 minutes and 15 secondsUh, in the cab, on the way to the airport,

43 minutes and 18 secondsand then in the airplane on our, like, ten-hour flight back to the States.

43 minutes and 23 secondsUh, Greg threw up on my Uber, so that's...

43 minutes and 26 secondsThat's why I switched to Lyft.

43 minutes and 27 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

43 minutes and 30 secondsI know how to say: "Why didn't you tell me to pull over?" in Swedish.

43 minutes and 33 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

43 minutes and 34 secondsSo, it just felt like-- Everything was, like, finally like:

43 minutes and 36 seconds"Oh, god! Maybe this is actually going to work!"

43 minutes and 39 seconds\[GREG LAUGHS\]

43 minutes and 40 secondsIt was great!

43 minutes and 41 secondsA lot of people passed on it.

43 minutes and 42 secondsA lot of people thought it was-- They offered us less money.

43 minutes and 44 secondsThere were some people who wanted to give us, like, a tiny bit of money.

43 minutes and 46 secondsWe were like: "We want to make a really good game.

43 minutes and 48 secondsIt's going to take this much money."

43 minutes and 50 secondsAnd Starbreeze turned out to be, um, the one that was the most enthusiastic,

43 minutes and 54 secondsand also the one that gave us the-- the best-- the best deal.

43 minutes and 57 secondsLike, the best-- the most supportive offer came from Starbreeze.

44 minutes and 0 secondsSo it was great that it ended up

44 minutes and 2 secondsbeing the one that, um, made it all the way to the end.

44 minutes and 6 secondsBut they've been great, and...

44 minutes and 8 secondsAnd it's kind of funny, because there is a such big difference

44 minutes and 9 secondsbetween Psychonauts and PAYDAY, you know, and...

44 minutes and 11 secondsBut, I think, they have a lot of ideas about how to...

44 minutes and 15 secondsuh... make the game a big hit.

44 minutes and 17 secondsSo, I look forward to... the hit Psychonauts 2.

44 minutes and 21 secondsTIM: Oh, Miyuki, do you have a question?

44 minutes and 23 seconds-MIYUKI: Oh, no, I was just stretching. -TIM: No, okay, great, okay.

44 minutes and 25 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

44 minutes and 26 secondsI'm going to get down before I break this chair

44 minutes and 28 secondsand throw my back out again.

44 minutes and 29 secondsGREG: It's a significant amount of money for the studio.

44 minutes and 32 secondsThat means that, uh, the runway is longer

44 minutes and 35 secondsthan I've seen it in the time I've been here.

44 minutes and 37 secondsGREG: But, yeah, he seems happy.

44 minutes and 39 secondsI feel like he was probably pretty stressed

44 minutes and 41 secondsmostly because of the publisher deal not being sorted out.

44 minutes and 44 secondsSo, I think now that that is,

44 minutes and 45 secondsand he knows that now it's just about making a game...

44 minutes and 48 secondsLike, everybody seems excited about just kind of diving in.

44 minutes and 53 secondsRYAN: ...down to Mint Plaza, and go to Chez Papa.

44 minutes and 55 seconds-And enjoy a really, really nice-- -TIM: CHEZ PAPA!

44 minutes and 58 seconds-Yeah, Chez Papa! -TIM: I'm down at Chez Papa!

45 minutes and 0 secondsTIM: Sorry, I've been drinking champagne. Sounded funny...

45 minutes and 3 seconds-\[RYAN LAUGHS\] -TIM: ...to me.

45 minutes and 5 secondsJAMES: Tim is smashed for this meeting.

45 minutes and 6 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -TIM: Yeah! Let's do some brains!

45 minutes and 9 secondsJAMES: Yeah, so, I'm not quite sure how to do this presentation,

45 minutes and 12 secondsbecause it's an update.

45 minutes and 13 secondsBut what I would really love to do is to just read the narrative explanation--

45 minutes and 16 secondsor the narrative piece I've written for each section of the level.

45 minutes and 19 secondsAnd then...

45 minutes and 20 secondsjust turn towards you guys, and if you go like this...

45 minutes and 22 secondsAnd then we just...

45 minutes and 24 seconds"I really would just like to get a rubber stamp and get out of here."

45 minutes and 25 seconds-Yeah. -\[JAMES LAUGHS\]

45 minutes and 27 secondsI don't know how you guys feel about that...

45 minutes and 28 secondsZAK: ...but I'd like to just say some things, and have you agree.

45 minutes and 31 secondsUh... sure.

45 minutes and 33 secondsLEVI: But the cool thing is that, uh, Helmut actually will be singing,

45 minutes and 36 secondsand you can hear that.

45 minutes and 37 secondsSo you will hear words related to whatever objects are falling.

45 minutes and 42 secondsSo it'll put two and two together

45 minutes and 44 secondsthat the wasteland is creations coming from Helmut's singing.

45 minutes and 49 secondsThat's the first one.

45 minutes and 51 secondsKeep going? Good? I got thumbs up? Okay.

45 minutes and 53 secondsThere are Censors on each island fighting, uh...

45 minutes and 56 secondsnew enemies that represent the senses coming in.

45 minutes and 58 secondsThere is kind of a little war going on between them.

46 minutes and 0 secondsAnd your job is to help fight those,

46 minutes and 1 secondso the Censors can take control of the island.

46 minutes and 3 secondsAnd filter the senses for Helmut.

46 minutes and 6 seconds-LEVI: Which visibly means that... -JAMES: You like that? No?

46 minutes and 9 seconds\[LEVI CHUCKLES\]

46 minutes and 11 secondsTIM: Flashing yellow light. Keep going.

46 minutes and 12 seconds-\[LEVI CHUCKLES\] -I'm kidding. It's fine.

46 minutes and 15 secondsUm, and once you complete that, once you do that,

46 minutes and 17 secondsonce you help the Censors take back control,

46 minutes and 20 secondsthey kind of, you know, shut off a big valve

46 minutes and 22 secondsthat stops the senses from overwhelming.

46 minutes and 24 secondsZAK: Yes, I mean, that is the one thing I am confused about, because it is...

46 minutes and 26 secondsLike, he is building a memory, but you are repairing the islands,

46 minutes and 29 secondsso that you can then rebuild the memory?

46 minutes and 30 secondsTIM: You're not repairing the islands, you're not putting them all back together.

46 minutes and 33 secondsYou are just shutting off valves on each one.

46 minutes and 34 seconds-JAMES: Right, right. -ZAK: Right, and then he makes a memory...

46 minutes and 36 secondsJAMES: So, the memory-- The memory is just, like...

46 minutes and 38 secondsIt's a narrative pay-off at the end of the level.

46 minutes and 39 secondsBut his conflict with not being able to recall memories is done

46 minutes and 42 secondsafter you get back into his brain.

46 minutes and 44 secondsYeah, I'm not sure that makes sense.

46 minutes and 46 secondsWell, I-- I guess-- That part I thought made sense.

46 minutes and 48 secondsBecause at first he is building this-- this--

46 minutes and 50 secondsHe is singing this thing and the set is being built...

46 minutes and 52 secondsPAUL: I don't know if Zak was totally convinced.

46 minutes and 53 seconds-PAUL: He was just, like... -JAMES: I don't think...

46 minutes and 54 secondsJAMES: I think Zak was maybe the least convinced of the three of them.

46 minutes and 58 secondsI think Tim was on board

46 minutes and 59 secondsfor the narrative stuff that is important to Tim.

47 minutes and 1 secondWhich is like: "Who Helmut is,

47 minutes and 3 secondsand his interactions with the other characters."

47 minutes and 5 secondsI think-- I think Zak is way more on board than he was at the first pitch session,

47 minutes and 10 secondsbecause we simplified the goals of the character.

47 minutes and 13 secondsAnd once that was pretty clearly explained to him,

47 minutes and 15 secondshe was, uh... I think he was okay with it.

47 minutes and 18 seconds-Okay. -JAMES: So...

47 minutes and 19 secondsA+!

47 minutes and 20 secondsZAK: Maybe.

47 minutes and 22 secondsJAMES: A-

47 minutes and 23 secondsNo, I get that. I think I get that.

47 minutes and 24 secondsIt's kind of a Pass / No Pass at this point.

47 minutes and 26 secondsThat's why I went to UC Santa Cruz.

47 minutes and 27 secondsThat's a horrible thing to say to us.

47 minutes and 29 secondsNo, no, no. I mean, I mean--

47 minutes and 31 secondsYou don't know until you, like, really start-- start building it.

47 minutes and 33 secondsAnd it's, like, that's the real point of this phase.

47 minutes and 35 secondsIt is, like, to get something that people are excited about enough.

47 minutes and 37 seconds-I didn't mean that in an insulting way. -JAMES: No, no, absolutely.

47 minutes and 39 secondsZAK: Is there enough material? And does it makes sense?

47 minutes and 41 secondsAnd does it serve as a good seed to start building from?

47 minutes and 43 secondsAnd then from there it'll get better, and better, and better.

47 minutes and 45 secondsJAMES: Yeah, obviously this is all still going to change

47 minutes and 47 secondsover the course of making the level.

47 minutes and 48 secondsBut our goal with that change was to...

47 minutes and 50 secondssimplify what the player is thinking they are doing.

47 minutes and 52 secondsZAK: Sure.

47 minutes and 53 secondsAll right. Not canceled!

47 minutes and 55 seconds\[ZAK CHUCKLES\] What?

47 minutes and 56 seconds-It's not canceled, right? -\[LAUGHTER\]

47 minutes and 58 secondsTIM: The level is not canceled. You get a big 'Not canceled'.

47 minutes and 59 secondsJAMES: Are we clear to go into whiteboxing?

48 minutes and 1 second-ZAK: I think so-o-o... -RYAN: Sure.

48 minutes and 3 secondsZAK: You know, there is always going to be questions, but this isn't a big enough one

48 minutes and 6 secondsthat I would say go back to another couple of days of concept.

48 minutes and 7 secondsI would say go into whiteboxing, and figure it out then.

48 minutes and 9 seconds-Excellent! -RYAN: Yeah, it's one...

48 minutes and 10 seconds...that we will probably keep asking about during whiteboxing,

48 minutes and 13 secondsto make sure that it's being thought of and solved.

48 minutes and 15 secondsYeah, I do have questions about whiteboxing.

48 minutes and 17 seconds-I don't know if this is the time. -RYAN: Nope!

48 minutes and 19 seconds\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

48 minutes and 20 seconds-TIM: I gotta go. -I gotta go too.

48 minutes and 24 secondsTIM: Yeah! Uh... we'll see. His level is not done yet.

48 minutes and 27 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

48 minutes and 28 secondsHe is a very creative guy,

48 minutes and 29 secondshe is a really funny guy.

48 minutes and 30 secondsUh, so we have a lot of hopes.

48 minutes and 32 secondsAnd he hasn't, you know, made a big level like this ever before.

48 minutes and 35 secondsUm...

48 minutes and 36 secondsAnd so, I think this process will be...

48 minutes and 39 secondssomewhat painful for him?

48 minutes and 40 secondsAnd then he'll come out of it a better designer.

48 minutes and 43 secondsYeah, I mean...

48 minutes and 45 secondsYeah, I can't be a 100% confident it'll work either.

48 minutes and 48 secondsJust because I have-- I haven't made a Psychonauts 2 level before.

48 minutes and 51 secondsUm, and it's also the first one in the game.

48 minutes and 53 secondsUm...

48 minutes and 54 secondsSo we are going to have to figure it out as we go along.

48 minutes and 56 secondsType in, uh... C E.

48 minutes and 58 secondsSpace.

48 minutes and 59 secondsGoTo...

49 minutes and 1 secondAnd select 'GoToWarp'.

49 minutes and 3 secondsWhich is, like, kind of near the very top there.

49 minutes and 5 seconds\[MUSIC\]

49 minutes and 6 secondsAnd...

49 minutes and 7 secondsGo ahead and, um... Go into Lab.

49 minutes and 10 secondsWow! Fancy.

49 minutes and 12 secondsRYAN: And, uh...

49 minutes and 14 secondsNow... yeah, if you run straight forward.

49 minutes and 17 secondsJAMES: Oh, man!

49 minutes and 20 secondsHere is Helmut's brain!

49 minutes and 21 seconds\[MUSIC\]

50 minutes and 1 secondBam!

50 minutes and 5 secondsIs it gray?

50 minutes and 6 seconds\[JAMES CHUCKLES\]

50 minutes and 7 seconds-JAMES: I'm so nervous. -Is it corpse gray?

50 minutes and 9 seconds-JAMES: Look at it and s-- -LEVI: No, no, no.

50 minutes and 10 seconds-Want to try it? -LEVI: No!

50 minutes and 12 secondsYeah, you do.

50 minutes and 13 secondsCan I take a little sip?

50 minutes and 15 seconds-Ryan, do you want to try it? -No, thank you.

50 minutes and 17 secondsWe live in the post-food future.

50 minutes and 19 secondsNo, we do not live in the post-food future.

50 minutes and 21 seconds-We do not live in the post-food future. -\[JAMES LAUGHS\]

50 minutes and 22 secondsWe do not, we do not.

50 minutes and 26 secondsThere you go, yeah, sure, sure.

50 minutes and 28 secondsIt's very smooth.

50 minutes and 29 secondsWhich most protein stuff is terrible about.

50 minutes and 31 secondsZAK: Yes, I know.

50 minutes and 32 secondsSo, it could be worse. There's just way more than I want--

50 minutes and 37 seconds-JAMES: Oh, god! -\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

-JAMES: Oh, god! -[ZAK LAUGHS]
