## Episode Transcript

16 secondsPAUL: He never did anything for us.

17 seconds\[PAUL LAUGHS\]

18 secondsHow do you guys feel about Asif making a level for the game?

21 secondsDo you feel betrayed? Abandoned? Bewildered? Jealous?

26 secondsPAUL: Sure.

27 seconds\[MUSIC\]

1 minute and 0 secondsThis breaks a lot of rules.

1 minute and 1 secondThe Gods Must Be Hungry.

1 minute and 3 seconds-Asif Siddiky. -\[CHEERING\]

1 minute and 4 secondsI have not done this before, ever.

1 minute and 7 seconds-KEE: Man, we made a video game, you guys. -ASIF: Yeah.

1 minute and 10 seconds\[ASIF SIGHS\]

1 minute and 11 secondsTIM: Luckily, Compton is completely in turn around at this point, right?

1 minute and 14 secondsZAK: Compton. The idea now is to actually take

1 minute and 17 secondsThe Gods Must Be Hungry as a core concept.

1 minute and 19 secondsAnd that's going to be the base of the Compton level.

1 minute and 20 seconds\[MUSIC\]

1 minute and 28 secondsEMILY: Asif has sort of been interning under Ryan.

1 minute and 35 secondsASIF: Just, like, learning basic whiteboxing stuff

1 minute and 38 secondsand placing assets and things like that.

1 minute and 40 secondsThat just kept evolving over the months

1 minute and 42 secondsand I started doing, um...

1 minute and 46 secondslittle parts of the real world in the game.

1 minute and 51 secondsYeah, just a bunch of small tasks

1 minute and 53 secondsthat eventually, like, ballooned to the point

1 minute and 55 secondswhere I was making content that would eventually ship in the game.

2 minutes and 1 secondEMILY: So, we are here, at the last brain, and, um...

2 minutes and 7 seconds...time is tight.

2 minutes and 8 secondsASIF: So, um...

2 minutes and 11 secondsZak sort of pulled me aside and asked how I would feel

2 minutes and 14 secondsabout doing one of the brain levels.

2 minutes and 17 secondsAnd it would basically be The Gods Must Be Hungry.

2 minutes and 20 seconds\[MUSIC\]

2 minutes and 26 secondsAnd so, when it was suggested, like: "Let's bring that in as a level.

2 minutes and 29 secondsUm, and let Asif make it."

2 minutes and 31 secondsI was like: "That makes so much sense."

2 minutes and 32 secondsIt's a great setup for the ideas.

2 minutes and 33 secondsAnd also, Asif has always been...

2 minutes and 34 secondsYou know, we'll do these interviews, or he'll watch a team meeting,

2 minutes and 37 secondsand he'll be sitting in the back there, taking notes, and then...

2 minutes and 40 secondsI'll get this email after the meeting saying: "Here is some ideas."

2 minutes and 42 secondsEMILY: He, uh, sends me...

2 minutes and 45 secondssome drawings, like, incognito sometimes, about meetings.

2 minutes and 50 secondsDo you know this?

2 minutes and 51 secondsOh, he does.

2 minutes and 52 seconds\[MUSIC\]

2 minutes and 56 secondsASIF: Like, everyone who, like, is, uh...

3 minutes and 0 secondslike, an avid consumer of something wants to, like--

3 minutes and 3 secondsor entertains the idea of, like, making content within that medium, like...

3 minutes and 8 secondsIt's been the same for us for all these years.

3 minutes and 11 secondsLike, even before we got into, like, doing game documentary stuff,

3 minutes and 15 secondslike, we all grew up watching movies and, like, we wanted to make a movie.

3 minutes and 19 secondsAnd then, we started doing--

3 minutes and 21 secondsmaking documentaries about the chip music scene,

3 minutes and 23 secondsand then we all started writing chip music.

3 minutes and 25 secondsAnd... I think it's just a natural thing that happens.

3 minutes and 28 secondsLike, the more and more you get, like...

3 minutes and 30 secondsdeep into covering something and learning more about it,

3 minutes and 33 secondsand see how other people create stuff in that medium,

3 minutes and 37 secondslike, makes you just want to do it more and more.

3 minutes and 39 secondsUm, so...

3 minutes and 41 secondsYeah, I would say that pretty much, like, as soon as we started working here

3 minutes and 45 secondsand, like, covering Double Fine in 2012, like...

3 minutes and 49 secondsit just became more and more appealing to, like, work on games and...

3 minutes and 53 secondsI definitely wasn't alone in that.

3 minutes and 54 secondsLike, the three of us, like, talked about game ideas for forever.

3 minutes and 59 secondsTIM: And, I think, some people can't stop making up ideas

4 minutes and 1 secondand stuff like that, and...

4 minutes and 3 secondsyou'd see, you know, Asif kind of pushing against that

4 minutes and 5 secondsand wanting to share those ideas.

4 minutes and 6 secondsAnd I think that is great to let him just have that opportunity

4 minutes and 8 secondsto now do it in the level.

4 minutes and 11 secondsUh, cool. I'm, you know...

4 minutes and 14 secondsI very well may not get an opportunity like this, so, like...

4 minutes and 18 secondsLet me just...

4 minutes and 19 secondssay yes and worry about being scared later.

4 minutes and 23 secondsSo, uh... So, we are going to have Asif

4 minutes and 25 secondsbecause that was his Amnesia Fortnight level-- or project.

4 minutes and 29 secondsHe is going to work on that with Will and Emily.

4 minutes and 31 seconds\[PAUL SNEEZES\]

4 minutes and 33 secondsExcuse me?

4 minutes and 34 seconds\[WILL LAUGHS\]

4 minutes and 38 seconds-Asif, our new... -Came out of nowhere.

4 minutes and 39 secondsYeah, he is our new designer.

4 minutes and 41 seconds-I don't know where they found him. -Yeah.

4 minutes and 43 secondsSo, now we are on team Compton!

4 minutes and 45 secondsIt's Asif, me, and Will!

4 minutes and 47 secondsAnd we are trying to figure out

4 minutes and 50 secondsthe last of the Psychic Seven's brain we go into.

4 minutes and 54 secondsPAUL: You seem to work with Emily a lot too.

4 minutes and 55 secondsAnd how has your, sort of...

4 minutes and 58 secondsprofessional relationship developed over the course of this project?

5 minutes and 2 secondsYou seem to always be on the same teams, and...

5 minutes and 4 secondsYeah.

5 minutes and 7 seconds-Will, you don't drive me crazy! -Cool!

5 minutes and 9 secondsIt happens, it's life.

5 minutes and 11 secondsIt's called collaboration.

5 minutes and 12 seconds-Oh, did you get that? -Sometimes people drive people crazy.

5 minutes and 17 secondsThat guy?

5 minutes and 18 secondsHe is super easy to work with.

5 minutes and 19 secondsAnd we can just go...

5 minutes and 21 seconds\[CLICKS TONGUE\]

5 minutes and 21 secondsAnd just... it works.

5 minutes and 23 secondsWILL: It just works.

5 minutes and 24 secondsAnd that's just really awesome, you know.

5 minutes and 26 secondsLike, I don't think I've had any disagreements with Emily, so, um...

5 minutes and 30 secondsIt's really fortunate that we started out on the same team.

5 minutes and 33 secondsAnd now we can continue.

5 minutes and 34 secondsEMILY: Yeah.

5 minutes and 35 secondsDo you want a cookie?

5 minutes and 36 seconds-I want a cookie. -Let's go get a cookie.

5 minutes and 38 secondsDo you want a cookie? Okay.

5 minutes and 40 seconds-EMILY: They are poisoned cookies! -WILL: Oh, god!

5 minutes and 42 seconds\[MUSIC\]

5 minutes and 46 seconds-WILL: Where are these cookies?! -EMILY: Cookies!

5 minutes and 48 secondsEMILY: Wo-ho-ho-ho-ow!

5 minutes and 50 seconds\[INDISTINCT CHATTERING\]

5 minutes and 53 seconds\[MUSIC\]

5 minutes and 58 secondsBig cookie!

6 minutes and 0 secondsYou got the weird one.

6 minutes and 2 seconds-\[WILL GRUNTS\] -EMILY: Cookie time!

6 minutes and 3 seconds\[WILL AND EMILY CHEW LOUDLY\]

6 minutes and 4 secondsSo...

6 minutes and 6 secondsWhat are we going to do?

6 minutes and 8 secondsHmm?

6 minutes and 8 secondsWhat are we going to do?

6 minutes and 10 secondsEMILY: We are trying to figure out the story of Compton Boole.

6 minutes and 15 secondsZAK: So, Compton's big problem.

6 minutes and 16 secondsThis is actually the biggest, uh...

6 minutes and 18 secondsyour biggest problem as well.

6 minutes and 20 secondsWe don't really know what his mental condition is.

6 minutes and 22 secondsStuff that we've talked about before is that...

6 minutes and 24 secondshe can talk to animals, he is Dogen's granddad,

6 minutes and 27 secondshe is one of the original Psychic Seven.

6 minutes and 30 secondsUh, he is very close friends with Cassie.

6 minutes and 31 secondsCassie and him had sort of a bond.

6 minutes and 33 secondsAnd you get the Brainstorm power inside his mind.

6 minutes and 35 seconds\[MUSIC\]

6 minutes and 42 secondsTIM: Yeah, they really focused on the animation there, and not...

6 minutes and 44 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

6 minutes and 50 seconds\[TIM HUMS\]

6 minutes and 51 secondsHello.

6 minutes and 52 seconds-Asif. -How's it going, you guys?

6 minutes and 54 secondsOh, now I remember!

6 minutes and 55 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -Okay!

6 minutes and 57 seconds-It still needs to be a cooking game. -We are doing it!

6 minutes and 59 secondsAnd we are doing it, and it's going to be rad.

7 minutes and 1 secondIt's going to be awesome.

7 minutes and 1 secondTreating this as an analogue for, like, how he feels about, um...

7 minutes and 6 secondsthe Psychonauts becoming, like, a government agency, right?

7 minutes and 9 secondsBecause he initially joined for the whole mind expansion thing, and...

7 minutes and 12 secondsMaybe that's how he felt about cooking in general.

7 minutes and 15 secondsThat was, like, his way of communicating with people.

7 minutes and 17 secondsBecause he is not good at doing that.

7 minutes and 19 secondsAnd then, um...

7 minutes and 20 secondsthe game show being, like...

7 minutes and 23 seconds-Wait, what did you say? -...grafted on top of that.

7 minutes and 24 secondsHe got into cooking, because he is not...

7 minutes and 26 secondsASIF: Oh, I was saying that's just, like...

7 minutes and 27 secondsThat's just his way of, like...

7 minutes and 29 secondsuh...

7 minutes and 31 secondscommunicating or, like, you know, relating with other people basically.

7 minutes and 34 seconds-TIM: That's interesting. -Yeah, interesting how it works out, yeah.

7 minutes and 36 secondsAh, you know, everyone has to make it personal in some way.

7 minutes and 39 seconds-But, uh... yes. -\[EMILY LAUGHS\]

7 minutes and 40 secondsThanks, guys.

7 minutes and 42 secondsThat's awesome.

7 minutes and 44 secondsDon't forget deep frying.

7 minutes and 45 secondsYou know, it's-- it can be a high pressure.

7 minutes and 47 secondsAnd, um, he just wants to do a good job, so.

7 minutes and 50 secondsHe's got a good team to work with.

7 minutes and 53 secondsASIF: There are a lot of people touching it.

7 minutes and 55 secondsAnd, like, you don't want to be the person that, like...

7 minutes and 58 secondsdrops the thing you are carrying, right?

7 minutes and 59 secondsOr, like, your corner of it, so.

8 minutes and 3 secondsIn that sense, like, I feel a lot of responsibility.

8 minutes and 6 secondsTrying not to let-- let anyone down basically.

8 minutes and 8 secondsI mean, that's the thing I'm--

8 minutes and 10 secondsWe are going to try and let everything happen, but, like...

8 minutes and 16 seconds-Just-- just saying. -Yep.

8 minutes and 19 secondsEMILY: There is pressure to do this level

8 minutes and 21 secondsa lot faster than the others, because, I mean--

8 minutes and 23 secondsAnd, oh, also...

8 minutes and 25 secondsThey want the level to be small, because there is a lot of large levels,

8 minutes and 29 secondsand we can't go crazytown, because...

8 minutes and 34 seconds...people will die.

8 minutes and 36 secondsPeople will die.

8 minutes and 37 secondsAsif is kind of thrown into, uh...

8 minutes and 40 seconds\[EMILY CHUCKLES\]

8 minutes and 41 seconds...a kind of a tough situation, where it's like:

8 minutes and 43 seconds"No, it's two weeks.

8 minutes and 44 secondsIf you don't figure it out, we gotta start cutting stuff, or..."

8 minutes and 48 secondsIt's a little bit more, like, dire at this point.

8 minutes and 51 secondsZAK: I love the whole, like, game show, VHS.

8 minutes and 54 secondsAnd I would really lean in hard to that.

8 minutes and 55 secondsAnd do, like, weird transitions and fullscreen effects.

8 minutes and 58 secondsAnd it seems like you are already thinking about it that way.

9 minutes and 0 secondsI know you guys had ideas for, like, commercial breaks,

9 minutes and 2 secondsand, like, live action, and, like, a theme song.

9 minutes and 4 secondsAnd, like, really embrace that.

9 minutes and 6 seconds\[MUSIC\]

9 minutes and 7 secondsZAK: Current-- current Compton idea-- have you seen?

9 minutes and 10 secondsTIM: I... haven't seen it in a couple days.

9 minutes and 12 secondsIt's going to be... amazing.

9 minutes and 14 seconds\[MUSIC\]

9 minutes and 15 secondsAnd, I don't know what these guys are going to say.

9 minutes and 18 secondsWe'll see-- we'll see on Monday.

9 minutes and 20 secondsI'm going to, like, present that stuff up there.

9 minutes and 23 secondsAnd they are going to be like: "Why isn't this, and this,

9 minutes and 24 secondsand this, and this in there?"

9 minutes and 25 secondsAnd I'm going to be like:

9 minutes and 27 seconds"Because it doesn't work together!"

9 minutes and 29 secondsBut, we'll-- we'll see what happens.

9 minutes and 31 seconds\[MUSIC\]

9 minutes and 33 secondsDrinking water!

9 minutes and 44 secondsEMILY: Okay! Okay, so, first!

9 minutes and 46 secondsClick!

9 minutes and 47 seconds\[EMILY VOCALIZES TV STATIC NOISE\]

9 minutes and 48 secondsSo, like, static-y.

9 minutes and 50 secondsAnd then you hear a little: "Ting!"

9 minutes and 51 secondsRecord.

9 minutes and 52 secondsAnd there is dramatic soap opera music.

9 minutes and 55 secondsChannel 3!

9 minutes and 55 secondsCassie is like: "Why didn't you come?"

9 minutes and 58 secondsDramatic soap opera music.

10 minutes and 0 seconds"Because, my dear...

10 minutes and 1 second\[CLEARS THROAT\]

10 minutes and 2 seconds...I had birds in my ears at the time."

10 minutes and 4 seconds\[EMILY VOCALIZES STATIC TV NOISE\]

10 minutes and 6 secondsChannel 4!

10 minutes and 7 seconds\[EMILY HUMS A TUNE\]

10 minutes and 8 secondsScary music.

10 minutes and 10 seconds\[EMILY VOCALIZES STATIC TV NOISE\]

10 minutes and 12 seconds\[EMILY VOCALIZES A GOAT BLEATING\]

10 minutes and 13 seconds-\[EMILY VOCALIZES STATIC TV NOISE\] -\[LAUGHTER\]

10 minutes and 16 secondsEMILY: All right.

10 minutes and 17 secondsAnd... "Welcome, welcome, welcome!

10 minutes and 19 secondsI'm your host, Ford Cruller!

10 minutes and 21 secondsAnd this is Temporary Game Show Title."

10 minutes and 23 seconds-ZAK: "Yay! -EMILY: "Yay!"

10 minutes and 26 secondsEMILY: And Ford explains the rules.

10 minutes and 28 secondsUm...

10 minutes and 29 seconds"Now, let me introduce our first contestant.

10 minutes and 32 secondsHello, young man. What's your name?

10 minutes and 34 secondsRaz, you abandoned your family to go to the psychic summer camp

10 minutes and 38 secondswithout their knowledge.

10 minutes and 39 secondsHow did that make Frazie feel?

10 minutes and 41 secondsA. Horrible.

10 minutes and 42 secondsB. Scared.

10 minutes and 43 secondsC. Awful.

10 minutes and 44 secondsD. All of the above.

10 minutes and 47 seconds...get you onto the next round.

10 minutes and 48 secondsSo, is this still a cooking show?

10 minutes and 50 seconds-EMILY: Yes. -ASIF: Mm-hmm.

10 minutes and 51 secondsTIM: Okay, that's just what happens in-between?

10 minutes and 52 secondsASIF: Those are the physical challenge things.

10 minutes and 54 secondsThat's, like, the thing you compete in.

10 minutes and 56 seconds-TIM: Cooking. -Cooking!

10 minutes and 57 secondsYeah, I mean, as long as you are not losing the cooking show.

11 minutes and 0 secondsBecause I really like the cooking show.

11 minutes and 1 secondEMILY: Yeah, yeah! I was thinking--

11 minutes and 3 secondsWe were looking at, um...

11 minutes and 5 secondsHold on, I'm going to show you.

11 minutes and 7 secondsLike, the cooking show--

11 minutes and 8 secondsTIM: Often something gets approved,

11 minutes and 10 secondspeople have a moment where they all are together and like:

11 minutes and 12 seconds"That's a great idea!"

11 minutes and 13 secondsAnd then you don't check in with--

11 minutes and 15 secondsAnd then you check in, like, in a couple of weeks,

11 minutes and 16 secondsand it's something totally else.

11 minutes and 17 secondsYou are like: "What? What is this thing that you are doing now?

11 minutes and 19 secondsBecause we approved this other thing. It was a great idea."

11 minutes and 21 secondsAnd, like: "Well...

11 minutes and 22 secondsYou know, we actually tried to work on it--

11 minutes and 23 secondswe just changed-- we just changed it to this other thing."

11 minutes and 25 secondsIt's like: "Well...

11 minutes and 27 secondsJust try and remember the feeling we had that made that work-- sense.

11 minutes and 30 secondsAnd is it not valid?

11 minutes and 31 secondsLike, did you learn something that made that--

11 minutes and 33 secondsproved that that wasn't going to work?"

11 minutes and 34 secondsIt's like: "No, we just kind of moved into this other thing."

11 minutes and 35 secondsIt's like: "Wha--"

11 minutes and 36 secondsDon't let that go for no reason.

11 minutes and 38 secondsLike, if you have a good reason, then you should abandon it.

11 minutes and 40 secondsBut if, like...

11 minutes and 41 secondsYou try and remember what you liked about that thing,

11 minutes and 43 secondsand why you got excited about it, and try and keep that alive.

11 minutes and 46 secondsI just-- I mean, like, the cooking show theme

11 minutes and 48 secondsdefinitely seemed to strengthen his-- his problem of being overwhelmed

11 minutes and 52 secondsand being, you know, overstimulated by stuff.

11 minutes and 56 seconds-Did you want to talk about that? -That was one of the things.

11 minutes and 58 secondsEMILY: I was taking it more in the direction of

12 minutes and 1 secondhe is sort of reliving, uh...

12 minutes and 3 secondsyou know, with recording and reliving sort of past things.

12 minutes and 7 secondsRepeating.

12 minutes and 8 secondsYou know, how you do that thing in your mind where you repeat, like:

12 minutes and 10 seconds"Oh, god! Why did I do that?"

12 minutes and 12 secondsZAK: I don't know, I really like the TV stuff.

12 minutes and 13 secondsI don't think it would actually be--

12 minutes and 14 secondsI think it makes for a nice frame,

12 minutes and 16 secondsbecause the game show stuff is so frenetic.

12 minutes and 19 secondsIt's just that I--

12 minutes and 20 secondsI worry about diluting what you are kind of parodying.

12 minutes and 22 secondsBecause if it's, like, a cooking--

12 minutes and 23 secondsIf it's Iron Chef, it's, like, such a--

12 minutes and 24 seconds"Okay, we are parodying this, like, over the top cooking show."

12 minutes and 28 secondsAnd then, if you add-- and it's also The Newlyweds,

12 minutes and 30 secondsyou know, or Jeopardy.

12 minutes and 32 secondsYou just-- you start to water it down a little bit with the parodies.

12 minutes and 34 secondsIt's a less clear idea.

12 minutes and 36 secondsASIF: You mean, like, the trivia thing too?

12 minutes and 37 seconds-TIM: Yeah. -ASIF: Mm.

12 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: Is that trivia thing, like, a thing that player is doing?

12 minutes and 40 secondsThey are answering trivia questions?

12 minutes and 41 secondsASIF: Yeah, it was meant to be, like, a dialogue tree interaction.

12 minutes and 43 secondsAnd it's sort of your only opportunity for, like, getting more story

12 minutes and 47 secondsor, like, other characters in the level.

12 minutes and 48 seconds-Mm-hmm. -ASIF: Um...

12 minutes and 50 seconds\[ASIF TAKES A DEEP BREATH\]

12 minutes and 54 secondsTIM: Yeah, the trivia thing. I'm not saying don't do the trivia thing.

12 minutes and 56 secondsI'm just, um...

12 minutes and 57 secondsI like the cooking show thing.

12 minutes and 59 secondsThat's why we decided why we are going to do this, right?

13 minutes and 1 secondWe were, like: "Like Gods Must Be Hungry."

13 minutes and 3 secondsAnd wanted that to be...

13 minutes and 5 secondsCool, that sounds good.

13 minutes and 6 seconds-TIM: Cool, all right, is that it? -Thanks, guys.

13 minutes and 8 secondsI think I'm always the first one to run out of the meeting room, but...

13 minutes and 11 secondsUh, is anyone else? There goes Geoff!

13 minutes and 12 secondsAll right! Good, good, good, good.

13 minutes and 13 secondsZAK: We gotta play Tijuana Taxi.

13 minutes and 16 secondsI don't know what that is, but I'm sure it's totally offensive.

13 minutes and 21 secondsEMILY: Uh, Compton...

13 minutes and 22 secondsCompton's been a little difficult.

13 minutes and 25 seconds-With the food, and animals, and... -ZAK: I know, I know.

13 minutes and 28 secondsHave to have Cassie, and...

13 minutes and 29 seconds-...backstory, I don't know, I just-- -And Brainstorm.

13 minutes and 32 seconds-And Brainstorm! -Yeah.

13 minutes and 34 seconds\[MUSIC\]

13 minutes and 36 secondsASIF: Yeah, I mean, ideally, like...

13 minutes and 37 secondsThe idea was that we would save a bunch of concept time

13 minutes and 40 secondsby already having this idea

13 minutes and 42 secondsand just, like, plopping it straight into the game.

13 minutes and 45 secondsBut the problem is that...

13 minutes and 46 secondsthere are all these other considerations that we have, um...

13 minutes and 49 secondsfor, like, things about the character that have already been decided.

13 minutes and 52 secondsAnd then, there is also a power that's kind of already figured out

13 minutes and 56 secondsthat we need to introduce in this level, and...

14 minutes and 0 secondsIt-- all of these things don't necessarily fit in.

14 minutes and 3 secondsThey don't slot in perfectly with The Gods Must Be Hungry,

14 minutes and 5 secondsbasically, is what the problem is.

14 minutes and 7 secondsUm, so, we are just trying to figure that out.

14 minutes and 15 seconds\[MUSIC\]

14 minutes and 18 secondsASIF: Is there any way we can move

14 minutes and 19 secondsprototyping of the Brainstorming power up?

14 minutes and 21 secondsBecause I know you had talked about doing some more tinkering with that

14 minutes and 24 secondsand, like, what it is, so that it can come from that and how it functions.

14 minutes and 27 secondsWe should at least be able to have those discussions.

14 minutes and 30 secondsASIF: It's weird in a way, like...

14 minutes and 32 seconds\[ASIF CHUCKLES\]

14 minutes and 33 secondsIn the current state-- because, you know, the powers are always evolving, and...

14 minutes and 36 secondsThey get retooled and, like, sometimes completely changed

14 minutes and 40 secondsbased on what the needs of a level are.

14 minutes and 42 secondsAll right, and Brainstorm...

14 minutes and 45 seconds-ZAK: Goats! -AMY: Yeah.

14 minutes and 47 secondsAMY: So, each lightning strike will scramble it into something else.

14 minutes and 49 secondsCool!

14 minutes and 50 secondsAMY: And then, if you hit it...

14 minutes and 52 secondsOh, god.

14 minutes and 53 secondsIt's supposed to-- So, they sort of cycle through

14 minutes and 55 secondsthe things they can scramble into.

14 minutes and 57 secondsAnd then, if they take any damage at all, you can lock them into that form.

15 minutes and 0 secondsUm, and that's something that, I think,

15 minutes and 1 secondthe Compton team is going to be using for puzzles there.

15 minutes and 3 secondsWhere you are transforming different food ingredients

15 minutes and 5 secondsinto different stuff and using them.

15 minutes and 7 secondsAnd you'll be able to sort of swap through these pieces.

15 minutes and 9 secondsI did something really bad.

15 minutes and 10 secondsASIF: In this case-- in it's current form,

15 minutes and 11 secondsthe power that we are supposed to be basing this level around

15 minutes and 14 secondsor at least introducing to Raz in this level...

15 minutes and 16 secondsis completely, like...

15 minutes and 19 secondsyou know, antithetical to, like, the gameplay of Gods Must Be Hungry.

15 minutes and 23 secondsYou need a specific outcome,

15 minutes and 24 secondsand this, like, just generates a bunch of random outcomes right now.

15 minutes and 29 secondsBut some early things I was playing around with Brainstorm was...

15 minutes and 34 seconds...creating opportunity and danger at the same time.

15 minutes and 37 secondsSo, you want to open that little case to get the Challenge Marker in there,

15 minutes and 41 secondsbut now you've made the floor dangerous.

15 minutes and 43 secondsSo, you have to be a little bit more careful getting over there.

15 minutes and 47 secondsZAK: So, that's just sort of, like, thematically embracing

15 minutes and 48 secondsthe random nature of Brainstorm

15 minutes and 50 secondsby having it turn on stuff that's, like, both good and bad...

15 minutes and 53 seconds-Exactly. -...or unpredictable.

15 minutes and 55 secondsThat all seems super cool.

15 minutes and 56 secondsThe way that Brainstorm is used in these cases is

15 minutes and 59 secondsthere is a switch that you can only press with Brainstorm.

16 minutes and 2 secondsBut it doesn't feel like you are using Brainstorm...

16 minutes and 4 seconds-...in a sort of, like, psychic way. -Yeah.

16 minutes and 6 secondsIt's just: "Here is the way that I press this button."

16 minutes and 8 seconds-Right. -It's just a shock switch basically.

16 minutes and 11 secondsUm...

16 minutes and 12 secondsIs there a world where we don't have Brainstorm?

16 minutes and 14 secondsZAK: S-s-su-u-re.

16 minutes and 18 secondsI don't know.

16 minutes and 20 seconds-Will and Emily. -EMILY: Hm?

16 minutes and 22 secondsWhat do you think?

16 minutes and 25 seconds\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

16 minutes and 28 seconds"This power doesn't really fit with this character, guys!"

16 minutes and 31 secondsBut, um...

16 minutes and 33 secondsThat's-- that's not really my--

16 minutes and 36 secondsmy place.

16 minutes and 37 secondsWILL: Excuse me?

16 minutes and 38 secondsHey, diddle, diddle.

16 minutes and 39 secondsHey, diddle, diddle. Put the Will in the middle.

16 minutes and 41 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

16 minutes and 44 secondsSo, where are you guys at now?

16 minutes and 45 secondsWhat is the structure, like, as you see it?

16 minutes and 47 secondsJust-- just sort of going through all these strange, like, uh...

16 minutes and 52 secondsnonsense game show.

16 minutes and 54 secondsto reinforce the, like, overwhelmed feeling

16 minutes and 59 secondsof just, like, changing.

17 minutes and 0 secondsNow, I don't want to break my own rule about not worrying during brainstorming,

17 minutes and 3 secondsbut, I think-- a lot of this is giving me very strong Hollis vibe though.

17 minutes and 6 seconds-Like, it's very similar... -EMILY: Yeah, yeah, I know.

17 minutes and 9 seconds-The wheel of fortune. -The lights and stuff.

17 minutes and 10 secondsThat being really Vegas-y looking.

17 minutes and 12 secondsThat's the problem with-- if you make a game show world

17 minutes and 14 secondsit still would look like Vegas world.

17 minutes and 15 secondsASIF: That's also another major constraint.

17 minutes and 17 secondsJust, like...

17 minutes and 18 secondsWe now have all the other levels kind of figured out.

17 minutes and 21 secondsSo, like, now, this...

17 minutes and 23 secondsThis level can't necessarily step

17 minutes and 25 secondson things that other levels have done, right?

17 minutes and 28 secondsIt just feels like it's really crowded territory in our--

17 minutes and 30 secondsin this one particular game

17 minutes and 31 secondsto, like, do a... real show-y game show world.

17 minutes and 34 secondsMm-hmm.

17 minutes and 35 secondsSo, you can first, like, focus on what is the environment now

17 minutes and 38 secondsbesides the arena.

17 minutes and 39 secondsIs it the arena? Is it such a big arena that it's like a town?

17 minutes and 41 secondsOr is it a small arena

17 minutes and 42 secondsand there is stuff outside of the arena that you live in.

17 minutes and 44 secondsOr what is the setting for the game?

17 minutes and 48 secondsFocus to the arena is better than, like, um...

17 minutes and 51 secondsexpanding it out into, like, an arena town, I guess, for me.

17 minutes and 54 secondsBecause, like, you want to be able to, like...

17 minutes and 57 secondsSee all the options.

17 minutes and 59 secondsYeah, but if you just have the whole level set in one big bowl,

18 minutes and 2 secondswill it feel like you are really exploring at all?

18 minutes and 3 secondsMm-hmm.

18 minutes and 4 secondsEMILY: Yeah, we are also sort of fighting

18 minutes and 5 secondsthat it's supposed to be one of the smallest levels, you know, so.

18 minutes and 8 secondsI didn't know that it was supposed to be one of the smallest levels.

18 minutes and 10 secondsEMILY: Yeah.

18 minutes and 11 secondsOh, maybe that one big bowl thing is starting to sound good then.

18 minutes and 13 seconds\[WILL CHUCKLES\]

18 minutes and 13 secondsThe three of us will...

18 minutes and 15 seconds-TIM: I just want to have an aesthetic. -...come up with something.

18 minutes and 16 secondsTIM: Yeah, just a nameable aesthetic.

18 minutes and 18 secondsSure.

18 minutes and 22 secondsTIM: A nameable location.

18 minutes and 24 seconds-TIM: All right, you guys. -Thanks, Tim.

18 minutes and 26 secondsCool!

18 minutes and 27 secondsWe'll get out of your office and talk about stuff.

18 minutes and 29 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

18 minutes and 31 secondsWILL: I'm kind of brainstormed out.

18 minutes and 32 secondsSo, brainstorming feels like...

18 minutes and 34 secondsdoing a ton work without doing any work.

18 minutes and 37 secondsSo, you still have the feeling that you did no work.

18 minutes and 39 secondsBut you still just mentally sat there

18 minutes and 41 secondsand, like, just kind of ground away

18 minutes and 44 secondsat this, like, thing,

18 minutes and 46 secondsthis ethereal thing with all these floating pieces

18 minutes and 48 secondsand you are like: "How do they all fit together?"

18 minutes and 50 secondsAnd you leave those meetings just exhausted.

18 minutes and 52 secondsPAUL: And is the brainstorming phase starting to eat into the production phase?

18 minutes and 55 seconds-PAUL: In terms of those twelve weeks? -It is, yeah, yeah.

18 minutes and 57 secondsTechnically, should have started on Monday with that.

19 minutes and 0 secondsBut, I don't think anyone has done that yet on any team, so.

19 minutes and 4 secondsNo, absolutely not!

19 minutes and 6 secondsUh, well, maybe Gristol?

19 minutes and 7 secondsI feel like we followed Peter Chan's thing, like...

19 minutes and 11 secondsASIF: Which we didn't have the advantage of this time around, so.

19 minutes and 13 secondsNo.

19 minutes and 14 secondsASIF: We've seen it, like...

19 minutes and 16 seconds...happen to everybody else, and...

19 minutes and 18 secondsI mean, really the only difference is, that, like, I'm just...

19 minutes and 22 secondsyou know, a participant versus an informed observer, I guess.

19 minutes and 26 seconds\[MUSIC\]

19 minutes and 29 secondsFor as much, like, stuff as I have helped out with,

19 minutes and 32 secondsyou know, whatever I did on AF,

19 minutes and 34 secondsthat doesn't necessarily prepare you for, like...

19 minutes and 38 secondslevel design at this scope, basically,

19 minutes and 40 secondswith, like, this big of a project and this many different considerations.

19 minutes and 44 secondsSo, this is definitely, like...

19 minutes and 46 secondsa whole new challenge for me at this point.

19 minutes and 51 secondsEMILY: I think Asif is freaking out a little bit.

19 minutes and 52 secondsLike, he is doing a very good job, but I think--

19 minutes and 55 secondsor I feel his pressure a little bit,

19 minutes and 57 secondsI sense it, I sense it off his aura.

20 minutes and 0 secondsBut he-- he is doing fabulous.

20 minutes and 2 secondsHe is great.

20 minutes and 3 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 20 secondsTIM: But I'm kind of--

20 minutes and 21 secondsI'm just always a little lost about where we are.

20 minutes and 23 secondsLike, what problem are we trying to solve, because...

20 minutes and 25 secondsAt various points it all seemed fine to me,

20 minutes and 27 secondsbut it seems like...

20 minutes and 29 secondsit's still kind of...

20 minutes and 30 secondsflipping around.

20 minutes and 32 secondsZAK: I think it's-- Right now, the way that it is

20 minutes and 34 secondsis there is, like, five ideas

20 minutes and 36 secondsand there is lots of things that people think about

20 minutes and 38 secondsthat solve for four of those ideas.

20 minutes and 40 secondsAnd then it's like: "Yeah, but what about this thing?"

20 minutes and 42 secondsIt's like: "I don't really know how that fits."

20 minutes and 44 secondsAnd so, there is a bunch of different versions of it

20 minutes and 46 secondsthat seem like they work together,

20 minutes and 48 secondsbut they don't necessarily do...

20 minutes and 51 secondsall of these things.

20 minutes and 55 secondsWILL: The god thing is a big question mark.

20 minutes and 57 secondsThis big, like, looming thing that we don't even know what it would be.

21 minutes and 0 secondsZAK: Yeah.

21 minutes and 1 secondWILL: And it's also an additional thing of, like...

21 minutes and 3 secondsI feel like the--

21 minutes and 5 secondsthe game show or whatever is going on should be overwhelming,

21 minutes and 8 secondsnot... this thing that's coming.

21 minutes and 10 secondsBut the god is the game show.

21 minutes and 11 secondsAnd it seems like that's just a writing problem

21 minutes and 13 secondsof figuring out, like, what does that god represent?

21 minutes and 15 secondsBut just the god is the driving force that makes the game show tense.

21 minutes and 18 secondsSo, they-- they are the same thing to me.

21 minutes and 20 secondsThis thing that you have to please.

21 minutes and 22 secondsAnd it adds to that--

21 minutes and 23 secondsthat feeling of helplessness of being a tiny thing,

21 minutes and 25 secondsand the tiny thing in the giant kitchen,

21 minutes and 28 secondsbecause the god is giant, you know?

21 minutes and 33 secondsZAK: Uh...

21 minutes and 35 secondsI mean, it could be...

21 minutes and 37 secondsjust giant kitchen-themed.

21 minutes and 40 secondsThat seems straightforward to me?

21 minutes and 43 secondsIt's just a flooded kitchen instead?

21 minutes and 45 secondsIt's just a bunch of messy stuff.

21 minutes and 46 seconds-Flooded kitchen? -Mm-hmm.

21 minutes and 47 secondsThat's totally moving in an entirely different direction, but...

21 minutes and 50 secondsASIF: I mean, I like that better than just a straightforward clean kitchen.

21 minutes and 53 secondsWhich would be like every other game.

21 minutes and 54 secondsEvery other cooking game.

21 minutes and 55 secondsZAK: He is incontinent.

21 minutes and 57 seconds-ZAK: That's his problem. -He is incontinent?

21 minutes and 59 secondsZAK: You have to go into his brain and solve his incontinence.

22 minutes and 1 secondTIM: Gross.

22 minutes and 2 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

22 minutes and 3 secondsASIF: It's a Gastronauts task.

22 minutes and 5 secondsYeah.

22 minutes and 6 secondsTIM: Bob Z's level.

22 minutes and 7 secondsYou gotta bring in the Gastronauts.

22 minutes and 8 secondsYou figured out where you are going to put them in the plot yet?

22 minutes and 10 secondsWhere you are going to put the Gastronauts?

22 minutes and 12 secondsUh, could we still create an overwhelming game show set

22 minutes and 14 secondswithout, like, some of these, uh...

22 minutes and 16 secondsspecific shapes we associate with older shows?

22 minutes and 19 secondsTIM: But-- so, this is the path that I am confused about, because, like...

22 minutes and 21 secondsThe cooking-- the high pressure cooking show is overwhelming and it works.

22 minutes and 24 secondsWhy are we talking about moving down another path?

22 minutes and 27 secondsLike, what's wrong with it?

22 minutes and 29 secondsASIF: The game show was something we tried to preserve for a long time.

22 minutes and 32 secondsThere has to be, like, characters,

22 minutes and 34 secondsand story elements, and exploration,

22 minutes and 38 secondsdialogue trees, and, like, puzzles,

22 minutes and 40 secondsand all that kind of stuff, right?

22 minutes and 41 secondsLike, these are the expectations that all of the levels have.

22 minutes and 44 secondsUm...

22 minutes and 46 secondsSo, it was a way to, like, bring more of that stuff in.

22 minutes and 49 secondsClaymation!

22 minutes and 51 seconds-WILL: There is the play-doh level... -ASIF: Just stop motion.

22 minutes and 53 secondsWILL: ...where everything is made of play-doh.

22 minutes and 54 secondsWhere is the play-doh level?

22 minutes and 56 secondsWILL: That's the one we are about to make for this.

22 minutes and 57 seconds\[WILL LAUGHS\]

22 minutes and 58 secondsYeah, the big advantage of play-doh is

23 minutes and 0 secondsall the things become Play-Doh Fun Factory.

23 minutes and 2 secondsAnd then you are molding all the stuff.

23 minutes and 4 secondsTIM: So, you are trying to make a fake food meal for a big play-doh god?

23 minutes and 7 seconds-Oh, look how cute that is! -That's pretty cute.

23 minutes and 9 seconds-EMILY: Yeah, isn't it? -WILL: We could do that.

23 minutes and 11 secondsI mean that would be satisfying to do, don't get me wrong.

23 minutes and 12 seconds-EMILY: Yeah. -\[ZAK LAUGHS\]

23 minutes and 16 seconds\[THE SOUND OF A BEVERAGE CAN OPENING\]

23 minutes and 17 secondsVery satisfying to do.

23 minutes and 19 secondsEMILY: Where did you have that?

23 minutes and 21 secondsAre you trying to please giant animals?

23 minutes and 23 secondsIs that what the gods are?

23 minutes and 24 secondsThe gods are giant, ridiculously large squirrels,

23 minutes and 27 secondsand puppies, and kittens.

23 minutes and 28 secondsIt's a giant rampaging kitten.

23 minutes and 30 secondsHave a giant 30-foot-tall goat that you are cooking for.

23 minutes and 33 secondsASIF: That's pretty good.

23 minutes and 34 secondsCan that just be the skybox?

23 minutes and 35 secondsA bunch of animals watching you through a little hole.

23 minutes and 38 secondsI like having those two worlds.

23 minutes and 39 seconds-ASIF: I think that's interesting. -TIM: Mm-hmm.

23 minutes and 41 seconds-WILL: I like that. -ASIF: Yeah.

23 minutes and 42 secondsThat's a theme.

23 minutes and 44 secondsTIM: That's a fine aesthetic.

23 minutes and 45 secondsASIF: Yeah, that feels a little bit more tied into his character.

23 minutes and 48 secondsZAK: If this was just a big giant kitchen

23 minutes and 50 secondsand there were some fussy goats upstairs who are...

23 minutes and 55 seconds...yelling at you the whole time.

23 minutes and 56 secondsTIM: There we go.

23 minutes and 57 secondsAnd they talk to you-- they are NPCs, but they are still dead.

23 minutes and 59 seconds"Let me give you a quest!"

24 minutes and 0 secondsASIF: Like, just the mouth moves and one creepy eye, yeah.

24 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: And you-- No, you think that's what's happening.

24 minutes and 5 secondsAnd then all the maggots that are making it move come out.

24 minutes and 7 secondsEw-w!

24 minutes and 9 seconds-WILL: Hunka hunka burning love. -EMILY: Hunka hunka burning love.

24 minutes and 11 seconds\[EMILY LAUGHS\]

24 minutes and 12 secondsWILL: Oh-h!

24 minutes and 13 secondsZAK: There you go, frog riding a squirrel.

24 minutes and 14 secondsWILL: Yeah.

24 minutes and 15 secondsASIF: Just like in real life.

24 minutes and 16 secondsTake that, animals!

24 minutes and 17 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

24 minutes and 18 secondsGet all uppity with us, we are like: "Yep."

24 minutes and 21 secondsWell, we pretty much nailed it.

24 minutes and 22 secondsWhy don't you type all of that into the level

24 minutes and 24 secondsand press Play, and see what happens.

24 minutes and 28 secondsASIF: That's good, there is a lot of good stuff to think about there.

24 minutes and 30 secondsZAK: Yep, yep, yep.

24 minutes and 33 secondsAll right, that was my last video.

24 minutes and 34 seconds-Okay. -Okay, guys.

24 minutes and 35 secondsASIF: Thank you, guys.

24 minutes and 37 secondsGood luck!

24 minutes and 39 secondsASIF: Yeah.

24 minutes and 43 secondsUh, that was a lot, but...

24 minutes and 44 seconds-\[EMILY LAUGHS\] -But it's...

24 minutes and 47 secondsThere is-- there is something interesting in there,

24 minutes and 49 secondsI think, that can be glommed on to.

24 minutes and 51 secondsI kind of actually want to, like, watch this footage again,

24 minutes and 53 secondsand try and process it.

24 minutes and 55 secondsHow do you feel about cooking a meal for a bunch of fancy little animals, Greg?

24 minutes and 59 secondsUh, that sounds wonderful.

25 minutes and 2 secondsThis is the character that is obsessed with animals and also cooking food?

25 minutes and 6 seconds-ASIF: Yeah. -That's kind of creepy.

25 minutes and 7 seconds\[GREG CHUCKLES\]

25 minutes and 9 secondsEMILY: I notice in these meetings, Asif, like, melts.

25 minutes and 11 seconds-ASIF: Slowly falls over. -EMILY: You slowly melt...

25 minutes and 13 secondsEMILY: ...when your brain is, like, burning out.

25 minutes and 17 secondsIt's what happened every time I was a kid,

25 minutes and 19 secondslike, going out with my parents somewhere.

25 minutes and 20 secondsI would just, like, slowly fall over and then sleep in a booth.

25 minutes and 24 secondsWILL: You know, when your parents come pick you up from something

25 minutes and 26 secondsand they start talking.

25 minutes and 27 seconds-Yeah. -And you are like: "No-o-o!"

25 minutes and 29 seconds"We were leaving!"

25 minutes and 30 secondsIt's the worst.

25 minutes and 31 secondsNo, no, no, and then they talk at the doorway for another 20 minutes.

25 minutes and 34 secondsWILL: Now I'm thinking back to that,

25 minutes and 35 secondsI'm like: "That was the only time they got to talk to people."

25 minutes and 38 secondsI know, it's so sad!

25 minutes and 40 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

25 minutes and 41 secondsAnd you are like: "Mom, come on!"

25 minutes and 43 seconds-"Mom, Dad, what are you doing?!" -WILL: "Mom, cartoons are on!"

25 minutes and 45 seconds-\[WILL CHUCKLES\] -Mm-hmm.

25 minutes and 47 secondsUm, okay.

25 minutes and 48 secondsI know this doesn't quite help us get to, like, a specific aesthetic yet.

25 minutes and 50 secondsBut I really do like-- to answer your question,

25 minutes and 53 secondsI really do like the whole animals waiting for a meal thing.

25 minutes and 56 secondsOkay.

25 minutes and 57 secondsBecause we've been talking about feeding animals.

25 minutes and 58 secondsLike, I think that's really cool.

25 minutes and 59 seconds\[ASIF DOES A SERIES OF QUICK EXHALES\]

26 minutes and 0 seconds\[MUSIC\]

26 minutes and 2 secondsASIF: Because I-- I like the feeling of, like...

26 minutes and 5 secondsYou are standing at this point.

26 minutes and 6 secondsAnd this is where all the ingredients are.

26 minutes and 8 secondsAnd then, you are handed down some order.

26 minutes and 10 secondsAnd it's like: "Cool, I know I need to grab this ingredient, this ingredient,

26 minutes and 13 secondsand go to that station, that station, and that station."

26 minutes and 16 secondsLike...

26 minutes and 16 seconds-If that is the player loop, you know? -EMILY: Yeah, that sounds clear.

26 minutes and 18 seconds-EMILY: Sure. -ASIF: I think that's pretty good.

26 minutes and 22 secondsASIF: Um, okay.

26 minutes and 23 secondsDo you guys feel good about just, like, taking out the TV stuff.

26 minutes and 26 seconds-ASIF: And then replacing it... -Yes.

26 minutes and 27 seconds...with, like, these are what these animals want to eat.

26 minutes and 29 seconds-ASIF: Go make 'em. -EMILY: Yeah.

26 minutes and 30 seconds-Yeah. -EMILY: Okay.

26 minutes and 31 secondsSo...
