## Episode Transcript

11 secondsTIM: But we have some of it on film.

12 secondsMaybe, no, well-- Yeah, Paul grabbed some stuff.

14 secondsOh, he is still alive! Look at him! Paul.

16 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

19 secondsThe whole time Paul was hiding in the camera.

21 secondsIn the corner, in the camera.

21 secondsHe was hiding in the camera!

23 secondsYeah, you should have seen him! It was very imp--

25 secondsI was telling the story about how we, uh...

27 secondsThere was a documentary crew for Microsoft that was filming their story to E3

31 secondswhich is just for internal use, which is interesting.

34 secondsAnd they got yelled at and kicked out of the room.

36 secondsAnd Paul did not, because no one could see him.

39 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

41 secondsHe was just so... stealth!

44 secondsSo stealth the whole time. It was very impressive!

46 secondsWhat's that?

48 secondsI think! Yeah, he was wearing all camo! He was just covered in--

52 secondsJP: Ghillie suit.

53 secondsSPAFF: People just believe he is allowed to exist.

55 secondsLike, the same thing happened with Geoff Keighley and Jack Black.

58 secondsThey were like: "You are not filming here!"

59 secondsAnd I was like: "Yes, he is."

1 minute and 0 secondsAnd they are: "Oh, okay!"

1 minute and 1 second\[LAUGHTER\]

1 minute and 3 seconds\[MUSIC\]

1 minute and 36 secondsJEREMY: Yeah, I don't know.

1 minute and 37 secondsI don't know if we've completely solved it.

1 minute and 38 secondsBecause I don't think, like, a lot of people understood

1 minute and 40 secondsthere was a hospital.

1 minute and 41 secondsJAMES: There is pretty consistent complaints

1 minute and 42 secondsthat the game is not Psychonautical enough right now.

1 minute and 45 secondsZak McClendon is no longer the project leader of Psychonauts.

1 minute and 48 secondsIt's just a new ball game.

1 minute and 49 secondsTIM: No, I mean, I'm not the project leader.

1 minute and 51 secondsBut I am a lot more creatively involved.

1 minute and 53 secondsAnd it's nice. It's nice to work with the team again.

1 minute and 55 secondsAnd they seem happier.

1 minute and 56 secondsANDY: I do want Ryan on there.

1 minute and 57 secondsThe question is, like, with his leave being what it is right now.

2 minutes and 1 secondTIM: We are getting acquired.

2 minutes and 3 secondsWe are getting bought by Microsoft.

2 minutes and 4 secondsJACK: Did Bill Gates wine and dine ya?

2 minutes and 7 secondsTIM: Welcome to our demo!

2 minutes and 9 secondsThis is so amazing! This is such a huge thing!

2 minutes and 15 secondsGREG: Hi, Spaff!

2 minutes and 17 seconds-GREG: How's it going? -SPAFF: Hello!

2 minutes and 19 seconds-GREG: You want to dance tonight? -SPAFF: Yeah, of course!

2 minutes and 21 seconds-GREG: You want to go swim today? -SPAFF: Yeah, fuck, yeah!

2 minutes and 23 seconds\[GREG LAUGHS\]

2 minutes and 24 secondsHello, everybody! Hello! Nice to see you all!

2 minutes and 27 secondsHow is it going?

2 minutes and 28 secondsMoira, everybody! Moira.

2 minutes and 30 seconds-Yeah! -Come look at her, yep!

2 minutes and 32 secondsUh, it's good to see you all.

2 minutes and 35 secondsWe are back from E3.

2 minutes and 36 secondsWe had a super exciting E3.

2 minutes and 38 secondsI want to thank everyone who came down there.

2 minutes and 39 secondsWe had a big crew of Double Finers down there working the booth.

2 minutes and 42 secondsIt was very heroic.

2 minutes and 43 secondsA team effort. People were swapping in giving demos.

2 minutes and 45 secondsSeeing people actually in there smiling, laughing, and enjoying the demo.

2 minutes and 51 secondsThat was super fun! I wish you all could have seen it.

2 minutes and 53 secondsWell, no, we went through some--

2 minutes and 55 secondsyou know, we went through some dramatic staffing changes before E3.

3 minutes and 1 secondAnd, um...

3 minutes and 2 seconds...kind of rebuilding the team after that and keeping everyone excited,

3 minutes and 6 secondsespecially when the project has been going on for three years...

3 minutes and 8 secondsis always a challenge.

3 minutes and 11 secondsAnd there was-- there was-- there was a--

3 minutes and 13 secondsIt was fun, it was fun.

3 minutes and 15 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

3 minutes and 16 secondsAll the Xbox studios seemed very excited to have us join them

3 minutes and 20 secondsand working alongside them.

3 minutes and 22 secondsBecause we obviously make it a lot cooler than it was before.

3 minutes and 24 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -So that was appreciated.

3 minutes and 27 secondsWhat else happened in the world of business last week?

3 minutes and 29 secondsUh, so, we got paid by Microsoft, which is exciting.

3 minutes and 31 secondsNow...

3 minutes and 32 secondsSo, we are not getting paid for any acquisition-related things.

3 minutes and 35 secondsWe are being paid because they bought up the publishing rights.

3 minutes and 37 secondsSo, they bought out Starbreeze.

3 minutes and 38 seconds\[OBJECT HITS THE FLOOR\]

3 minutes and 39 secondsThat's Starbreeze hitting the--

3 minutes and 40 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

3 minutes and 42 secondsBeing thrown to the curb, hitting the curb out there.

3 minutes and 44 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

3 minutes and 46 secondsBut they are taking our publisher contract and they paid out--

3 minutes and 48 secondsThey paid out all the remaining Starbreeze money at once?

3 minutes and 50 seconds-Yeah. -That's how they like to do stuff!

3 minutes and 51 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

3 minutes and 52 secondsI like them already!

3 minutes and 53 secondsThey are like: "What do we owe you? Let's pay it all!"

3 minutes and 55 secondsYep.

3 minutes and 56 secondsSo, that was nice. So, that's good.

3 minutes and 58 secondsAnd then, we are kicking off due diligence stuff now.

4 minutes and 0 secondsTIM: It's mostly about ownership and lawsuits.

4 minutes and 2 secondsGREG: Yep, so, today we get the big list

4 minutes and 5 secondsof all the docs we have to pull together and everything.

4 minutes and 8 secondsAnd then we have calls with them.

4 minutes and 9 secondsIt's all going to ramp up quick.

4 minutes and 11 secondsAll the other studio heads talked to us about how intense this process is.

4 minutes and 15 secondsAnd how we are going to have crazy two-three months here.

4 minutes and 18 secondsYou know, it's not a done deal still.

4 minutes and 20 secondsLike, we have months of due diligence still.

4 minutes and 23 secondsMonths more of people coming down and visiting,

4 minutes and 25 secondsand looking at all of our stuff.

4 minutes and 27 secondsUm...

4 minutes and 28 secondsAnd so there is going to be kind of ongoing negotiations and things still.

4 minutes and 31 secondsUm, so we are not really totally certain how everything is going to shake out.

4 minutes and 35 secondsAnd then, ultimately, I think, it's going to mean,

4 minutes and 38 secondsyou know, better salaries, and bonuses,

4 minutes and 40 secondsand benefits for everyone within the studio.

4 minutes and 43 secondsUm, and it's stuff we can't, like, totally commit to,

4 minutes and 45 secondsbecause it's all part of the negotiation still.

4 minutes and 48 secondsBut, uh...

4 minutes and 50 secondsIt sounds like everything will at least stay the same, if not get better.

4 minutes and 53 secondsTIM: Everything is the same!

4 minutes and 55 seconds-Nothing is going to change. -Yep.

4 minutes and 56 seconds-Onto the next thing! -Yep.

4 minutes and 58 secondsGreat.

4 minutes and 59 secondsUh, let's talk about Psychonauts 2!

5 minutes and 1 secondHi! What's going on over there in the corner?

5 minutes and 3 secondsWell, we did E3! That's done!

5 minutes and 4 secondsWe got our E3 demo.

5 minutes and 6 secondsThanks to everybody who worked on that.

5 minutes and 7 seconds-Yay! -\[CLAPPING\]

5 minutes and 9 secondsPAUL: What was the feeling? What was the vibe post-E3?

5 minutes and 11 secondsSo, we've been through a few different phases now.

5 minutes and 15 secondsSo, we, um...

5 minutes and 18 seconds...changed the team configuration.

5 minutes and 20 secondsThere was an aversion on the team to a really strong top-down management...

5 minutes and 24 secondsthat we had before.

5 minutes and 26 secondsSo, we took that away.

5 minutes and 27 secondsAnd they had a feeling that they would rather be

5 minutes and 29 secondson their own for a little while.

5 minutes and 30 secondsSo I didn't just step in as, like, project leader right away.

5 minutes and 32 secondsUh, and the team has self-organized right away

5 minutes and 34 secondsand they were very motivated,

5 minutes and 36 secondsand they started working on Loboto's level which was going to be our E3 demo.

5 minutes and 40 secondsUh, and they did a great job on that.

5 minutes and 43 secondsAnd, um...

5 minutes and 44 secondsThen I felt like I wanted to get a little more involved.

5 minutes and 46 secondsBecause I felt like that natural momentum

5 minutes and 49 secondsfrom being on their own for the first time was going to die down,

5 minutes and 52 secondsand they sort of would want someone to help them make

5 minutes and 55 secondscreative decisions quickly on the rest of these levels.

6 minutes and 7 seconds\[TIM HUMS\]

6 minutes and 9 secondsI thought...

6 minutes and 10 secondsGEOFF: (What are we waiting for?)

6 minutes and 11 seconds-Uh... -CAMDEN: Are we waiting for Ryan?

6 minutes and 13 secondsI was waiting for Ryan, but is he not coming?

6 minutes and 14 secondsKEE: There he is! I think that's Ryan.

6 minutes and 16 seconds-Ryan! -Hey!

6 minutes and 17 secondsI am very sorry.

6 minutes and 18 secondsThere is a chair over here, Ryan.

6 minutes and 20 secondsTIM: Uh, I wanted to start coming to these meetings,

6 minutes and 22 secondsif it's okay with you all, if you guys don't mind.

6 minutes and 24 secondsBecause I've been getting more involved in the project

6 minutes and 26 secondsand injecting myself ad hoc

6 minutes and 28 secondswherever I see people vulnerable to input.

6 minutes and 31 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

6 minutes and 32 secondsFrom a really high level I wanted to say

6 minutes and 35 secondssomething about the state of the project and where we are at.

6 minutes and 38 secondsUh...

6 minutes and 39 secondsIn that our, um...

6 minutes and 40 secondsOur situation has changed a little bit.

6 minutes and 42 secondsWe have been acquired.

6 minutes and 44 secondsI'm pretending-- I feel like the documentary

6 minutes and 46 secondsis going to feel like that's the moment I announced it.

6 minutes and 48 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

6 minutes and 49 seconds"Everybody, we have been acquired."

6 minutes and 52 secondsWe have a new situation, uh... financially,

6 minutes and 55 secondswhich is good.

6 minutes and 56 secondsWhich, um...

6 minutes and 57 secondsdoesn't mean we now have infinite time to get the game made.

7 minutes and 0 secondsWe still want to get the game, uh, ship next year,

7 minutes and 2 secondsbecause we put that in the trailer.

7 minutes and 3 secondsBut also, I think, we don't want to work on the game forever.

7 minutes and 5 secondsWe think there is a right-- there is a right time to work on it,

7 minutes and 7 secondsand the right amount of time to put into it.

7 minutes and 9 secondsBut I definitely feel like it changes

7 minutes and 11 secondsthe number one priority of our conversation from time to quality.

7 minutes and 14 secondsI just want to take a moment, and look at the game,

7 minutes and 17 secondsand look at each level as we come up to it,

7 minutes and 19 secondsin a holistic way, and be like:

7 minutes and 20 seconds"Are we hitting our goals with this level?

7 minutes and 21 secondsIs this level Psychonautical?

7 minutes and 23 secondsIs it good? Do we love it? Is it great?"

7 minutes and 25 secondsYou know? And I think that's going to bring up the things of, like:

7 minutes and 28 seconds"Well, you know...

7 minutes and 30 secondswe might need to change this thing."

7 minutes and 31 secondsAnd I'm definitely not trying to reboot every level.

7 minutes and 33 secondsLike, we've been looking at the different levels,

7 minutes and 35 secondsthey all need something different.

7 minutes and 36 secondsSo, we need to be-- have everyone--

7 minutes and 38 secondsI don't want to be causing any panic attacks.

7 minutes and 39 secondsSo I think we all need to get on board with the still compressed schedule.

7 minutes and 42 secondsAndy, obviously, you still care about the schedule, right?

7 minutes and 44 secondsOf course. Always.

7 minutes and 45 secondsBut it's not a-- It's not the same panic of, like:

7 minutes and 49 seconds"We have too much stuff to get done in too short of time."

7 minutes and 51 secondsIt's like: "What is the right--

7 minutes and 52 secondsWhat is the right amount of work to do for the rest of this game?

7 minutes and 55 secondsAnd what--

7 minutes and 56 secondsWhat do we really want to focus our creative energy on?"

7 minutes and 59 secondsRight?

8 minutes and 0 secondsRYAN: Obviously, coming back as--

8 minutes and 2 secondsSeeing the way that they had shifted,

8 minutes and 4 secondsand seeing the way things have changed, and the--

8 minutes and 7 secondssort of some of the differences that people were doing in terms of work,

8 minutes and 9 secondsum, was...

8 minutes and 11 secondsyou know, obviously, something to get used to.

8 minutes and 14 secondsBut it wasn't wholly unexpected from me.

8 minutes and 16 secondsPAUL: You had paternity leave?

8 minutes and 18 secondsI was on paternity leave for a little while, yeah.

8 minutes and 21 secondsIt was amazing!

8 minutes and 22 secondsIt was incredibly hard! Probably the hardest thing I've ever done.

8 minutes and 24 secondsBut it was also incredibly rewarding.

8 minutes and 26 secondsSo that was awesome. And I'm super happy I got to do that!

8 minutes and 29 secondsThank you, Double Fine.

8 minutes and 31 secondsLISETTE: If I was going to break out the team structure from before to after...

8 minutes and 34 secondsBefore Alpha it was pretty heavily design-driven.

8 minutes and 37 secondsUm, and then the artists and the concept artists

8 minutes and 39 secondswould kind of react to what design was coming up with.

8 minutes and 42 secondsUm, and then after Alpha...

8 minutes and 44 secondsRYAN: I want to, um...

8 minutes and 45 secondsLISETTE: ...this kind of went to a more of a-- kind of...

8 minutes and 48 secondshub... setup.

8 minutes and 50 secondsRYAN: I need to ask. Can I interrupt real quick?

8 minutes and 52 seconds-Yes. -I need to ask about that.

8 minutes and 53 secondsBecause I don't--

8 minutes and 54 secondsLike, I can see how that's the perception,

8 minutes and 55 secondsbut I don't know if I agree that that's the actual reality of what happened.

8 minutes and 58 secondsTIM: Like, a--

9 minutes and 0 secondsI don't know if that... diagram holds up.

9 minutes and 2 secondsI mean, I would say...

9 minutes and 4 secondsThat's not Loboto, right? On the left?

9 minutes and 6 secondsNo, this is...

9 minutes and 7 secondsTIM: I mean, I feel like this is a lot--

9 minutes and 8 secondswhat I saw with, like, the early Bob Z ones.

9 minutes and 10 secondsI mean, I think it was all on James to come up with stuff.

9 minutes and 12 secondsAnd then Jeremy and Levi would sit in the meeting and be like:

9 minutes and 15 seconds"Okay, okay, okay. I'll try and work with that."

9 minutes and 17 secondsI agree with that, but that is-- that's one case.

9 minutes and 21 seconds-RYAN: Right? -Yep.

9 minutes and 22 seconds-The structure was intended to be this. -Yes.

9 minutes and 24 secondsBut because of... dynamics,

9 minutes and 27 secondsand... team structure,

9 minutes and 29 secondsand... former leadership,

9 minutes and 31 secondsthe perception was more like this.

9 minutes and 36 secondsRYAN: I found out because Caryl called me on Friday night.

9 minutes and 39 secondsUm...

9 minutes and 40 secondsShe was trying to get a hold of me, and...

9 minutes and 42 secondswhich I appreciate, um...

9 minutes and 44 secondsbecause, yeah, that's the right thing to do.

9 minutes and 46 secondsPAUL: Was that a... well, shock?

9 minutes and 49 secondsYes.

9 minutes and 51 secondsYeah, it was for me.

9 minutes and 52 secondsYep.

9 minutes and 53 secondsYeah, it was definitely hard for me

9 minutes and 56 secondsfor quite a long time to, like...

9 minutes and 58 secondsdeal with that.

10 minutes and 0 secondsUm...

10 minutes and 1 secondI can't imagine anybody in my position would have had an easier time.

10 minutes and 6 secondsUm...

10 minutes and 7 secondsYeah, I talked to a lot of people about it, like, at the leadership level.

10 minutes and 10 secondsAnd...

10 minutes and 12 secondsI... listened to what they said.

10 minutes and 16 secondsUm...

10 minutes and 17 secondsUltimately, I, personally, don't know

10 minutes and 21 secondsif the situation was handled in the best manner.

10 minutes and 23 secondsI understand why everything was done.

10 minutes and 25 secondsMaybe that's ultimately how it had to happen anyway.

10 minutes and 28 secondsBut, yeah, I don't know.

10 minutes and 30 secondsThinking about it a little bit more,

10 minutes and 31 secondsI'm... not sure it's something I feel super comfortable talking about.

10 minutes and 35 secondsUm...

10 minutes and 36 secondsBecause we-- yeah, I mean, I consider Zak a friend.

10 minutes and 39 secondsAnd also understand a lot of, you know, people's criticism

10 minutes and 42 secondsof working under him on the project.

10 minutes and 46 secondsEven though I wasn't personally in the same position,

10 minutes and 49 secondsum, and didn't necessarily see those interactions in that way...

10 minutes and 52 secondsI can't tell them they are wrong.

10 minutes and 54 seconds\[MUSIC\]

11 minutes and 4 secondsRYAN: I want to make sure that there is just a good iterative process,

11 minutes and 6 secondswhere each person is bringing their skillset to bear

11 minutes and 8 secondsin terms of getting that actual stuff in 3D.

11 minutes and 11 secondsI mean, there is definitely been confusion in the past

11 minutes and 12 secondsof who gets final say in that process.

11 minutes and 14 seconds-Yes. -TIM: Or does anyone get final say?

11 minutes and 16 secondsOr, like-- I guess the fact that someone would ask:

11 minutes and 18 seconds"Who gets final say?"

11 minutes and 19 secondsmeans they are not working well together.

11 minutes and 20 seconds\[TIM CHUCKLES\]

11 minutes and 21 secondsBecause, normally, you would be like:

11 minutes and 23 seconds"We want to make sure everyone is happy with what we are doing."

11 minutes and 24 secondsYeah, I think that's a good point.

11 minutes and 26 secondsTIM: Yeah, I mean, we have--

11 minutes and 27 secondsI would say... the biggest company value

11 minutes and 30 secondsI always talk to everyone, even during interviews,

11 minutes and 32 secondsjob interviews, I say: "It's really important to me

11 minutes and 34 secondsat Double Fine that we have mutual respect for each other."

11 minutes and 37 secondsBecause... previous jobs I've had--

11 minutes and 39 secondsYou see a lot of rifts.

11 minutes and 40 secondsLike, there was a rift between the artists and the programmers on the past projects.

11 minutes and 45 secondsBecause they were in different buildings, you know.

11 minutes and 46 secondsAnd, um...

11 minutes and 48 secondsAnd I've seen a lot of, like, territorialism among disciplines.

11 minutes and 52 secondsAnd I wanted to have it be that the programmers felt lucky

11 minutes and 54 secondsto be working with artists of this caliber.

11 minutes and 56 secondsAnd the artists felt lucky to be working with the audio department.

11 minutes and 59 secondsAnd the audio department-- you know, and they respected the designers.

12 minutes and 1 secondAnd everyone had a lot of mutual respect.

12 minutes and 3 secondsI feel like we really achieved that as a company here.

12 minutes and 5 secondsAnd I felt like there were some...

12 minutes and 7 secondsuh...

12 minutes and 9 secondsnegative relationships that were set up at the beginning of this project.

12 minutes and 12 secondsSome-- some negative, uh... interactions

12 minutes and 15 secondsthat were just kind of festering.

12 minutes and 17 secondsBut, like, for instance-- like, if you look in Ford right now,

12 minutes and 19 secondsall the buildings are, like, perfectly square lined up.

12 minutes and 22 secondsAnd, like, they totally don't need to be.

12 minutes and 25 secondsUm, just, like, little things like that.

12 minutes and 27 secondsBut there is-- there is an interesting perspective.

12 minutes and 28 secondsThat's someone from design saying: "Why didn't art move these buildings?"

12 minutes and 31 secondsIn a way.

12 minutes and 32 secondsWhich is, like, I feel like art is kind of, like--

12 minutes and 34 secondsnot understanding, or not knowing that they can move the buildings or what--

12 minutes and 37 secondsI want to make-- I want to draw a really quick distinction.

12 minutes and 39 secondsBecause I hear why you would think that's what it sounds like.

12 minutes and 42 secondsBut I really wish that's what not what it sounded like.

12 minutes and 45 secondsTIM: It's kind of, like, Double Fine as a collaborative entity.

12 minutes and 47 secondsLike, just teaching people to talk about creative stuff, and give feedback,

12 minutes and 51 secondsand to receive feedback, I think, is an important thing.

12 minutes and 53 secondsA lot of people can't... take feedback.

12 minutes and 55 secondsAnd I think just learning how to, like, just talk openly and politely,

12 minutes and 58 secondsand, you know, respectfully, but honestly about the game's state all together,

13 minutes and 2 secondsand reminding everyone that everyone has a say in the game that we are making

13 minutes and 6 secondswas always why we-- we did it in the past.

13 minutes and 8 secondsAnd a lot of people don't realize how they feel about something

13 minutes and 11 secondsuntil they hear other people talking about it too sometimes, which is helpful.

13 minutes and 14 secondsSo I feel like you could have both options open to people.

13 minutes and 17 secondsNAOKO: Well, the forms are anonymous.

13 minutes and 18 secondsAnd that's to encourage people...

13 minutes and 21 secondsto share their opinions freely.

13 minutes and 23 secondsAnd I think that's good and bad.

13 minutes and 24 secondsI think it's good that people can be honest,

13 minutes and 26 secondsif they like they can't be honest in this meeting.

13 minutes and 27 secondsBut I think it's also, like...

13 minutes and 30 secondswhy should we have to be anonymous to be honest with each other

13 minutes and 33 secondsabout how the game's state is. You know, like, why can't we--

13 minutes and 35 seconds-Because I'll come after you. -\[LAUGHTER\]

13 minutes and 37 secondsAnd ask you: "Why?"

13 minutes and 39 secondsLike, and the thing is, like, Tim wants people to be happy.

13 minutes and 42 secondsLike...

13 minutes and 44 secondsmore than everyone.

13 minutes and 46 secondsThis place from what I've heard...

13 minutes and 48 secondsis-- just always been, like, a very happy place,

13 minutes and 52 secondsa really cool place.

13 minutes and 53 secondsAnd it still is!

13 minutes and 55 secondsBut some people aren't happy.

13 minutes and 56 secondsAnd if they aren't happy, I'm going to figure out why,

13 minutes and 59 secondsand what we can do.

14 minutes and 0 secondsI mean, it's fine if they smoke or vape, and they'll come outside with me.

14 minutes and 3 secondsBut, like, nobody smokes here!

14 minutes and 5 secondsI found this-- I found this in Tim's office.

14 minutes and 8 secondsNAOKO: Tim hates that I smoke.

14 minutes and 10 secondsAnd I'm just like: "You know that I have some gossip

14 minutes and 12 secondsthat you don't know about, because I do.

14 minutes and 14 secondsMONICA: You are trying to document her smoking?

14 minutes and 17 secondsPAUL: Yeah.

14 minutes and 18 secondsNAOKO: He is just like:

14 minutes and 19 seconds"Naoko, that's not why I want you to smoke."

14 minutes and 21 secondsAnd I'm like: "No, I get it!"

14 minutes and 22 secondsBut... I don't know. He hates smoking so much!

14 minutes and 25 seconds\[NAOKO LAUGHS\]

14 minutes and 26 secondsWhich is fair! Which is fair!

14 minutes and 29 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

14 minutes and 30 secondsI feel like we should be able to talk

14 minutes and 31 secondsabout things we like and don't like in the game

14 minutes and 32 secondswithout worrying about... hurting each other's feelings.

14 minutes and 35 secondsLike, learning to talk about it that's not, like... you know:

14 minutes and 39 seconds"I'm not saying you are a bad artist. I'm saying, like, this--

14 minutes and 41 secondsI couldn't see this thing, because it wasn't bright enough."

14 minutes and 43 secondsLike, why can't we--

14 minutes and 44 secondsDo we need to be anonymous to get those things out?

14 minutes and 52 seconds-Has that ever happened to you, Brian? -\[LAUGHTER\]

14 minutes and 54 secondsUh, but I think there are still hard feelings.

14 minutes and 56 secondsI think a lot of people have their defenses up.

14 minutes and 58 secondsA lot of people are really--

15 minutes and 0 secondsA lot of people who feel like their, um...

15 minutes and 2 secondstheir areas of ownership and responsibility on the project

15 minutes and 5 secondshad been trotted on, you know--

15 minutes and 7 secondsthey had been trespassed upon,

15 minutes and 9 secondsand so they put these big, big walls up to make sure that doesn't happen again.

15 minutes and 12 secondsBut in a project where things are functioning really well,

15 minutes and 14 secondsyou don't need those big-- you know, razor wire over every wall.

15 minutes and 18 secondsYou know, you can, like, you know,

15 minutes and 20 secondsbe more relaxed about that.

15 minutes and 21 secondsAnd I think trying to get the team into that more relaxed state

15 minutes and 23 secondswhere people are feeling good about...

15 minutes and 25 secondsyou know, collaborating across walls, and getting along.

15 minutes and 28 secondsIt's very hard not to take your art or your passion personally.

15 minutes and 33 secondsAnd I know-- I'm sure everybody in this room...

15 minutes and 37 secondshas struggled with that at some time,

15 minutes and 39 secondsespecially early on in our careers and stuff, but...

15 minutes and 42 secondsBut part of being in a profession like this is--

15 minutes and 46 secondsis learning not to take it personally.

15 minutes and 48 secondsSo, if somebody doesn't like my art...

15 minutes and 50 secondsOkay, that used to make me literally cry.

15 minutes and 53 secondsMOIRA: We need to be able to communicate with each other

15 minutes and 55 secondsin an effective way.

15 minutes and 56 secondsAnd that was something that was seriously lacking under Zak.

15 minutes and 59 secondsBecause nobody felt comfortable doing it.

16 minutes and 1 second"You can't-- No, you can't criticize design.

16 minutes and 3 secondsIf you criticize design, you are criticizing Zak,

16 minutes and 4 secondsand therefore everything is just shut down."

16 minutes and 6 secondsEach discipline is equally important in making a game.

16 minutes and 10 secondsAnd I feel that he put a lot more emphasis on design than anybody else.

16 minutes and 14 secondsAnd then, questioned everything that we did,

16 minutes and 17 secondsinstead of supporting,

16 minutes and 19 secondsor guiding.

16 minutes and 20 secondsYeah, because I've had managers who said: "That looks like shit."

16 minutes and 23 secondsAnd that was their entire feedback.

16 minutes and 25 secondsAnd that's not helpful, you know?

16 minutes and 27 secondsLISETTE: I'm sorry.

16 minutes and 29 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

16 minutes and 30 secondsWe are learning, we are all learning.

16 minutes and 32 secondsAnd she chose to give you that feedback right here.

16 minutes and 33 secondsMOIRA: I love working with you.

16 minutes and 35 secondsRYAN: I mean, there are-- I don't know, there are probably...

16 minutes and 38 secondsnumerous things that I would go back and do differently.

16 minutes and 40 secondsAnd-- and hopefully do better.

16 minutes and 43 secondsUm...

16 minutes and 44 secondsWe just-- we played through the game last Tuesday as a Leads group.

16 minutes and 49 secondsAnd we were able to just look at a ton of stuff in context.

16 minutes and 52 secondsUm, and see...

16 minutes and 56 secondsthe shape of the game, you know, as a whole.

17 minutes and 0 secondsWhoa-ow!

17 minutes and 1 secondThat looks-- makes me feel weird.

17 minutes and 4 seconds\[GEOFF CHUCKLES\]

17 minutes and 6 secondsRYAN: And, yeah, just doing that, I was like:

17 minutes and 8 seconds"Wow, if I was solving this particular creative problem again,

17 minutes and 11 secondsI would not have chosen to do that."

17 minutes and 13 secondsUm...

17 minutes and 15 secondsSo, I think there is a lot of--

17 minutes and 16 secondsI think there is a lot of aspects of the game

17 minutes and 17 secondsnow, looking back, we would do differently.

17 minutes and 19 secondsDoesn't mean what's there is necessarily bad.

17 minutes and 21 secondsIt just means what, you know--

17 minutes and 22 secondsThe solution for fixing going forward is, like:

17 minutes and 24 seconds"Do we want to make what's there better?

17 minutes and 25 secondsOr do we want to, like, change it? Or..."

17 minutes and 28 secondsYeah.

17 minutes and 30 secondsJust for the record, I'm totally lost right now.

17 minutes and 33 secondsZACH: Go to the classroom.

17 minutes and 34 secondsTIM: I know, but where was the class? I don't remember where it was.

17 minutes and 37 secondsLetting you know that the Leads-- we played through the whole game...

17 minutes and 42 secondsAsterisk.

17 minutes and 43 seconds...on Tuesday.

17 minutes and 44 seconds-And we didn't fight once. -We didn't fight once.

17 minutes and 47 seconds-It was pretty amazing. -Yep.

17 minutes and 48 secondsThe point of this was for the Leads to kind of look at what's next, and...

17 minutes and 53 secondsexpectations of time that we want to spend per level as we move forward.

17 minutes and 57 secondsAnd so when we looked at all of them, we were able to kind of rank them

17 minutes and 59 secondson the scale of one to five.

18 minutes and 1 secondOne being: "That level doesn't need too much work."

18 minutes and 3 secondsAnd five being: \[ANDY MAKES NOISES\]

18 minutes and 5 secondsHollis would be a five for example.

18 minutes and 8 secondsHalf of it. Parts of it are not--

18 minutes and 10 secondsANDY: Four point five.

18 minutes and 11 secondsSolid four!

18 minutes and 13 secondsANDY: Solid fo-- eh.

18 minutes and 14 secondsYou guys say whatever you want to say.

18 minutes and 15 seconds-That's fine. -\[LAUGHTER\]

18 minutes and 17 secondsAnd there is work going on to try to figure all this out.

18 minutes and 20 secondsUm, other news.

18 minutes and 22 secondsSome of you have already heard,

18 minutes and 24 secondsRyan will be leaving Double Fine.

18 minutes and 27 secondsHis last day is going to be next Friday.

18 minutes and 29 secondsUm, he will be missed.

18 minutes and 31 secondsUm...

18 minutes and 33 secondsI don't know if you have anything to add to that.

18 minutes and 34 secondsTIM: Speech!

18 minutes and 36 secondsI'm assuming up to now

18 minutes and 38 secondsin the documentary,

18 minutes and 40 secondsit would be obvious to viewers

18 minutes and 42 secondsthat it has not been the easiest project on Earth.

18 minutes and 46 secondsUm...

18 minutes and 47 secondsHave I been doing what I necessarily want to be doing?

18 minutes and 49 secondsNot all the time.

18 minutes and 51 secondsI would have enjoyed being a little more hands-on.

18 minutes and 53 secondsAnd so, yeah, it never really felt like...

18 minutes and 56 secondsI got to jump onto anything

18 minutes and 59 secondsand to, like, really sink my teeth into.

19 minutes and 1 secondAnd something that my wife and I had been talking about,

19 minutes and 3 secondsespecially now that we have a son,

19 minutes and 4 secondsis wanting to live closer to family.

19 minutes and 6 secondsSo, there is another opportunity that came up

19 minutes and 8 secondsthat, uh... gives us a chance to do that.

19 minutes and 10 secondsAnd so...

19 minutes and 12 secondsI don't know, kind of...

19 minutes and 13 secondseverything being considered all together,

19 minutes and 16 secondsfor me right now that felt like it was the best--

19 minutes and 19 secondsthe best thing to do.

19 minutes and 20 secondsUm...

19 minutes and 21 seconds\[MUSIC\]

19 minutes and 22 secondsYeah.

19 minutes and 23 secondsANDY: Thank you, Ryan.

19 minutes and 24 secondsYep.

19 minutes and 25 secondsUm...

19 minutes and 26 secondsSo, you know, in terms of, like,

19 minutes and 28 secondswhat that position is going to shake out to,

19 minutes and 30 secondsand what-- what the leadership thing-- we are still working that out,

19 minutes and 33 secondshow the level design team will kind of shape out, so.

19 minutes and 37 secondsRYAN: Yeah! Yeah, absolutely, yeah.

19 minutes and 39 secondsI will miss you, guys.

19 minutes and 43 secondsLike you asked earlier, but, you know, I'll miss working on Psychonauts too.

19 minutes and 47 secondsLike, it's-- it's a cool project.

19 minutes and 49 secondsFor all of its difficulties, um...

19 minutes and 52 secondsthere is a lot of really neat things there.

19 minutes and 53 secondsAnd the team is doing some really, really cool stuff.

19 minutes and 56 secondsAnd I will absolutely miss that.

19 minutes and 59 secondsThere is definitely a sense of regret for the things that I won't be here for.

20 minutes and 3 secondsUm...

20 minutes and 6 secondsAnd I feel a little of that already.

20 minutes and 8 secondsBut I'm also...

20 minutes and 11 secondsI'm pretty sure the team is going to do some amazing things, so.

20 minutes and 13 secondsI'm excited about it too.

20 minutes and 15 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 22 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 30 secondsPAUL: Do you feel like Ryan leaving--

20 minutes and 32 secondsWas that just--

20 minutes and 32 seconds-No. -PAUL: Was it inevitable?

20 minutes and 34 secondsI don't think it was inevitable in that it was a choice.

20 minutes and 37 secondsHe could have been like: "Well, there is a-- there is a vacuum.

20 minutes and 41 secondsAnd I could step into it, or I could step away from it."

20 minutes and 44 secondsAnd he chose to step away from it.

20 minutes and 46 secondsAnd I'm kind of stepping into it.

20 minutes and 47 secondsZak's whole thing was puzzle churches.

20 minutes and 49 secondsAnd I don't think those are very Psychonauts.

20 minutes and 51 secondsPlay that card. Play the Z card.

20 minutes and 53 secondsBecause my biggest experience with hospitals,

20 minutes and 55 secondsand I've been in them a lot in the last few months...

20 minutes and 58 secondsPlay that card too.

20 minutes and 59 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

21 minutes and 0 secondsTIM: That's when we started Hollis, right?

21 minutes and 3 secondsPAUL: Yeah...

21 minutes and 4 secondsAnd Hollis... is a little bit of a problem child.

21 minutes and 7 secondsI don't know if you know this.

21 minutes and 8 secondsI don't know what it is. There is some--

21 minutes and 10 secondsSomething is going on.

21 minutes and 11 secondsTIM: The thing that I am most concerned about the level is...

21 minutes and 14 secondsAre we living up to, like, the central premise of:

21 minutes and 18 seconds"Here is this hospital that's been creepily infested with Vegas."

21 minutes and 21 secondsLike, this area is supposed to be about, like, the Hippocratic oath,

21 minutes and 25 secondsand, like, dedication to patients and health.

21 minutes and 27 secondsIt's been, you know, corrupted

21 minutes and 28 secondsto be, like, rolling dice with people's lives, and stuff like that.

21 minutes and 31 secondsAnd just having that-- that imagery feel wrong in the space.

21 minutes and 34 secondsAnd it feel like you are in this hospital... is somewhat--

21 minutes and 38 secondsIt has not yet-- I think it's not yet been paid off in the level.

21 minutes and 42 secondsAnd, um...

21 minutes and 43 seconds\[MUSIC\]

21 minutes and 44 secondsAnd I think-- because that's the high concept of the level,

21 minutes and 46 secondsthat's something we really have to hit over and over again, and strengthen it.

21 minutes and 49 secondsAnd... I inserted myself most heavily into the Hollis level.

21 minutes and 54 secondsBecause there were these parts of the old level

21 minutes and 56 secondsthat I felt weren't really living up to the potential of it.

21 minutes and 58 secondsIt felt like it was... all in a big shoe box.

22 minutes and 0 secondsAnd it didn't look like a mental world to me.

22 minutes and 3 secondsI want no environment to look like a box,

22 minutes and 6 secondsever, in the world.

22 minutes and 7 secondsNo more boxes.

22 minutes and 9 secondsNo more shoe boxes.

22 minutes and 10 seconds-Rhombuses. -All rhombuses.

22 minutes and 12 secondsYeah, from now on. That's a secret shape.

22 minutes and 14 secondsTim wanted concept art to sort of reinvent Hollis,

22 minutes and 20 secondssort of give some-- some shape of the room,

22 minutes and 23 secondssome new ideas.

22 minutes and 24 secondsShake it up, shake it up a little bit.

22 minutes and 26 secondsUh, yeah, I was just thinking about how the levels went on the first game

22 minutes and 29 secondsonce we had our groove down kind of, and how people handed--

22 minutes and 32 secondsthey didn't really hand things off,

22 minutes and 34 secondsbecause they overlapped a lot from one discipline to another.

22 minutes and 36 secondsBut there was an area for everyone to collaborate.

22 minutes and 38 secondsBut not all collaborate all at once,

22 minutes and 39 secondsbut to collaborate in their areas.

22 minutes and 41 secondsWhen the concept art was kind of free to go wild with concept art,

22 minutes and 44 secondsand then have it kind of, you know, then pulled into a game flow by design,

22 minutes and 49 secondsand then the gameplay programmers and the world builders worked together

22 minutes and 51 secondsto, like, make the actual level out of that.

22 minutes and 53 secondsAnd so, I wanted to grab

22 minutes and 55 secondssome of the concept artists and just pull them into a room,

22 minutes and 57 secondsand just come up with new crazy ideas of what the level could look like.

23 minutes and 0 secondsUm, but I didn't really communicate that that well to anybody.

23 minutes and 3 secondsBecause I was still kind of trying to be stealth in coming in there,

23 minutes and 5 secondsand it was a really bad idea.

23 minutes and 6 secondsAnd, um, they had self-organized

23 minutes and 9 secondsinto having different leadership for different levels.

23 minutes and 12 secondsAnd they-- Geoff was in charge of the Hollis team.

23 minutes and 16 secondsAnd I didn't know that.

23 minutes and 17 secondsThis is what I get for coming in from more on the outside.

23 minutes and 20 secondsI was like: "Why does Geoff like to stand

23 minutes and 22 secondsby the whiteboard during all the meetings?"

23 minutes and 23 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

23 minutes and 24 seconds-EMILY: But, I mean, we can repurpose-- -That's what I'm talking about.

23 minutes and 26 secondsEMILY: But we can repurpose that stuff for other storylines.

23 minutes and 28 secondsAMY: We could literally just look at all the assets,

23 minutes and 29 secondslook at what we want to keep, look at how much we don't want to make,

23 minutes and 32 secondsand say: "What do we want to make with all of this stuff?"

23 minutes and 34 secondsJAMES: Yes.

23 minutes and 35 secondsI think is what James wants--

23 minutes and 38 seconds\[TALKING OVER EACH OTHER\]

23 minutes and 40 secondsJAMES: And I'm just trying to do it like Loboto.

23 minutes and 42 secondsWhich is, like, a series of--

23 minutes and 43 secondsLike, every moment in Loboto is a big interesting moment.

23 minutes and 47 secondsYeah, but before we did any of that,

23 minutes and 48 secondswe figured out what the structure of the space was.

23 minutes and 50 secondsAnd then we talked about

23 minutes and 51 secondswhat was going to happen between those locations.

23 minutes and 53 secondsWhich we are not. We are skipping over all of that.

23 minutes and 55 secondsWhich is...

23 minutes and 57 secondsmaybe a little frustrating for me,

23 minutes and 58 secondsbecause we are not doing this like we did Loboto.

24 minutes and 0 secondsThe way we are approaching Hollis is completely different.

24 minutes and 2 secondsThis was a different beast though.

24 minutes and 3 secondsEMILY: I think for Loboto...

24 minutes and 4 secondsGeoff was the best for-- for the situation and the circumstances.

24 minutes and 9 secondsAnd I don't know if it fits perfectly on top of the Hollis method.

24 minutes and 14 secondsAMY: Whatever weird process we created for Loboto,

24 minutes and 17 secondswhile it was functional in some ways,

24 minutes and 19 secondsit's not necessarily the process that Tim has used for the project either.

24 minutes and 22 secondsSo, we went from Zak regime to chaos.

24 minutes and 27 secondsAnd now Tim is coming in.

24 minutes and 29 secondsAnd while I think that's a good thing overall, it also means:

24 minutes and 32 seconds"Okay. Well, now things are going to change completely again."

24 minutes and 34 secondsNot to mention, this is a team that Zak built.

24 minutes and 37 secondsPAUL: Mm-hmm.

24 minutes and 39 secondsAnd he is gone.

24 minutes and 40 secondsSo whatever intention he had... is completely changing.

24 minutes and 44 secondsAnd there is a lot of tension... about:

24 minutes and 47 seconds"Should concept artists be creating the beats?

24 minutes and 49 secondsShould it be level designers?

24 minutes and 50 secondsShould programmers be involved in any of these meetings?"

24 minutes and 54 secondsUm...

24 minutes and 56 secondsIt's...

24 minutes and 59 secondsTensions are high.

25 minutes and 1 secondAnd emotions are high.

25 minutes and 2 secondsIf we want to do it like Loboto...

25 minutes and 4 secondsthat wasn't part of Loboto.

25 minutes and 6 secondsLike, it wasn't like this.

25 minutes and 7 seconds-Wait, I'm going to stop. -No, but it wasn't like...

25 minutes and 9 secondsI want to stop all this talking right now.

25 minutes and 11 secondsBecause I feel like we were kind of on the plan that, I think, will lead to--

25 minutes and 15 secondsWe don't need nitpick any future stuff right now.

25 minutes and 16 secondsI think the next step is for Gigi and myself

25 minutes and 19 secondsto start doing some concepts of these things mixed with gambling.

25 minutes and 23 secondsYeah, and then we can talk about laying the quest stuff on there,

25 minutes and 26 secondsand if we come to things in the quest flow that we don't like anymore,

25 minutes and 28 secondsor it don't fit anymore, we can throw them out.

25 minutes and 29 secondsBut that's the-- that's a future problem

25 minutes and 31 secondsthat we don't need to litigate at this moment.

25 minutes and 34 secondsThat's a great word to throw out in a meeting

25 minutes and 35 secondsif you want to shut people up, by the way.

25 minutes and 36 secondsLitigate.

25 minutes and 38 secondsRight? I don't want to litigate this right now.

25 minutes and 41 secondsJames.

25 minutes and 42 secondsWe'll be all right. We'll talk.

25 minutes and 43 seconds\[MUSIC\]

25 minutes and 44 secondsOkay?

25 minutes and 46 secondsYeah.

25 minutes and 47 seconds-Are you-- are you upset about this? -No!

25 minutes and 49 secondsEMILY: And so, Gigi and myself...

25 minutes and 51 secondsuh, went and drew...

25 minutes and 54 secondsblue sky stuff.

25 minutes and 55 secondsAnd it had to be... hospital, and it had to be casino.

25 minutes and 59 secondsAnd those two had to marry together.

26 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

26 minutes and 3 secondsAnd we did...

26 minutes and 4 secondsa shit ton of concept art.

26 minutes and 7 seconds-GIGI: It's a box. Oh, no, it's a box. -EMILY: Oh, no!

26 minutes and 10 seconds-GIGI: Oh, no, it's a box! -EMILY: Oh, no!

26 minutes and 11 seconds-GIGI: It's in a box! -It's in a box.

26 minutes and 14 secondsIt's in a box.

26 minutes and 17 secondsIt's a box!

26 minutes and 19 secondsI need to go to Vegas.

26 minutes and 21 secondsWhy am I even here?

26 minutes and 23 secondsYou don't need to go to Vegas, you are fine.

26 minutes and 25 secondsNo, I know, but I need to--

26 minutes and 26 secondsLike, I just need to experience it once, so I'm like: "Okay."

26 minutes and 28 secondsWait, wait, wait. Can I have your wallet?

26 minutes and 30 secondsAll right, here you go.

26 minutes and 32 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

26 minutes and 35 secondsWell, what about Maternity Roulette?

26 minutes and 37 secondsWhat about Pillchinko?

26 minutes and 39 secondsWhat about Heart Racing?

26 minutes and 41 secondsLike, a thing from a casino, and a thing from a hospital.

26 minutes and 44 secondsAnd you jam it together.

26 minutes and 45 secondsEMILY: We've been sort of chewing over this level for the past week

26 minutes and 50 secondsand trying to distill what's most important.

26 minutes and 52 secondsAnd all the interns and Raz go into Hollis' brain.

26 minutes and 56 secondsThis is the big thing. This is a big-- big change, I know.

26 minutes and 58 secondsAnd then, all of a sudden, the Luctopus is introduced early.

27 minutes and 2 secondsAnd she comes up and is big and scary and menacing.

27 minutes and 5 secondsAnd the shadow goes over them.

27 minutes and 7 seconds"Oh, no!"

27 minutes and 8 seconds-And grabs... -Mm-hmm.

27 minutes and 10 seconds...them two by two.

27 minutes and 11 secondsSo your mission is to go find your friends now.

27 minutes and 14 secondsSo you have something to do in there.

27 minutes and 15 secondsWe could have the areas that we've already modeled.

27 minutes and 18 secondsAnd we could put, like, Aaron and Morris in Area 1.

27 minutes and 23 secondsAnd you could solve a Mental Connection puzzle

27 minutes and 25 secondsor a combat puzzle.

27 minutes and 26 secondsI mean, it does, I think, improve this thing.

27 minutes and 28 seconds-The interns, for sure. -Okay.

27 minutes and 30 secondsI don't see it cutting anything, but it definitely adds to it.

27 minutes and 33 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

27 minutes and 35 secondsBut I mean, like, we wouldn't do the missions

27 minutes and 37 secondsof, like-- doing the High Roller.

27 minutes and 40 secondsTIM: I think you also have to do those.

27 minutes and 42 secondsSo, here is why. So, like, I think, um...

27 minutes and 44 secondsThe problem is that, I think...

27 minutes and 45 secondsThis is really cool for the story path about the interns.

27 minutes and 48 secondsIt makes that stuff better.

27 minutes and 49 secondsBut it makes the level no longer about Hollis,

27 minutes and 51 secondsand no longer about Hollis' problem.

27 minutes and 53 secondsAnd it seems that all the biggest quests and stuff in the level

27 minutes and 57 secondshave to be about gambling,

27 minutes and 58 secondshave to be about Hollis and her problem still.

28 minutes and 2 secondsEMILY: But, like, defeating the Luctopus isn't...

28 minutes and 5 seconds-...doing something for Hollis? -It is.

28 minutes and 6 seconds-It is. -Okay.

28 minutes and 7 seconds-Yeah. -Okay.

28 minutes and 8 secondsThat's also-- my comment on that boss fight

28 minutes and 10 secondswhen you guys first did it is like:

28 minutes and 11 seconds"Why is computers coming in as a theme now?"

28 minutes and 13 seconds-TIM: Or it's medical equipment? -GIGI: It's EKG.

28 minutes and 15 secondsTIM: If it's a piece of medical equipment--

28 minutes and 16 seconds-EMILY: It's an EKG machine. -TIM: Okay.

28 minutes and 18 secondsWe got a lot of meetings of you being like:

28 minutes and 20 seconds"Okay, here is the idea, Tim."

28 minutes and 21 secondsEMILY: Mm-hmm.

28 minutes and 22 secondsPAUL: And then him being like: "Hmm."

28 minutes and 24 secondsEMILY: His little-- his little-- his little dance.

28 minutes and 27 secondsHis little Tim dance.

28 minutes and 29 secondsHis little...

28 minutes and 30 seconds\[EMILY VOCALIZES DISCONTENT\]

28 minutes and 31 secondsYes, I know the Tim dance.

28 minutes and 33 secondsThe: "I don't want to say I hate it...

28 minutes and 36 secondsbut I hate it,

28 minutes and 38 secondsso I'm doing a little dance."

28 minutes and 39 seconds"I can't make this work..." dance

28 minutes and 42 seconds"...in my brain," you know?

28 minutes and 44 seconds\[MUSIC\]

28 minutes and 50 secondsLISETTE: Because right now, I think, there are people

28 minutes and 52 secondswith very different visions of what this level is.

28 minutes and 54 secondsAnd I think that's-- our biggest problem is

28 minutes and 56 secondstrying to have you guys brainstorm this week,

28 minutes and 58 secondsand everyone having very different ideas about what this level is,

29 minutes and 1 secondis the core challenge we are going to have when we open this up to the wider team.

29 minutes and 6 secondsZAHRA: I saw a lot of cool concepts on Friday.

29 minutes and 10 secondsDoes it mean you guys just...

29 minutes and 12 seconds...starting over completely? Or...

29 minutes and 15 secondsYeah, we are pretty much throwing out the Hollis casino

29 minutes and 17 secondsand starting again.

29 minutes and 20 secondsAnd I don't know how to solve it.

29 minutes and 21 seconds-Like... -Yeah.

29 minutes and 22 secondsEven a pharmacy and a, um...

29 minutes and 26 secondswhat are some of the other things we were talking about?

29 minutes and 27 secondsLike, these things are very-- very similar.

29 minutes and 30 secondsANDY: I was about to say, is the question:

29 minutes and 32 seconds"What's the difference between the pharmacy wing of a hospital

29 minutes and 34 secondsand the cardiac wing of a hospital,

29 minutes and 36 secondsand the maternity wing of a hospital?"

29 minutes and 37 secondsEMILY: Yeah, they are all boxes.

29 minutes and 39 secondsThey are all white boxes with different equipment in it?

29 minutes and 41 secondsWell, I'm saying we got all we can from the--

29 minutes and 43 secondsEMILY: And then, like...

29 minutes and 45 secondsTim wants...

29 minutes and 47 secondsus to have ownership over things,

29 minutes and 49 secondsbut he has his own ideas.

29 minutes and 51 secondsSo it's sort of like: "Can I-- can I do this?

29 minutes and 55 secondsCan-- is-- Will people get upset if I do this?"

29 minutes and 58 secondsGEOFF: That's why Hollis has been so fucking weird to work on

30 minutes and 1 secondthis last week.

30 minutes and 2 secondsJAMES: It does like Tim is rediscovering

30 minutes and 4 secondsthat he doesn't like designers.

30 minutes and 5 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

30 minutes and 7 secondsWhy?

30 minutes and 8 secondsWell... I mean, coming up with the core gameplay hook

30 minutes and 11 secondsseems like a designer thing to do.

30 minutes and 13 secondsSeems like an anybody thing to do.

30 minutes and 15 secondsI mean, that's what this teams are about.

30 minutes and 18 secondsAMY: So, there is the whole design team

30 minutes and 20 secondswhich under the Zak regime their responsibility was

30 minutes and 23 secondsto decide what this game was and make it.

30 minutes and 25 secondsAnd everybody else's responsibility was to make tools or art for them.

30 minutes and 30 secondsUh...

30 minutes and 31 secondsThat was the reality as I saw it.

30 minutes and 34 secondsUm...

30 minutes and 35 secondsAnd the transition from that to a collaborative environment

30 minutes and 38 secondshas been a rough one.

30 minutes and 40 secondsUm...

30 minutes and 41 secondsWe have, um...

30 minutes and 43 secondssome super nice people who are designers on this team.

30 minutes and 47 secondsBut...

30 minutes and 48 secondstaking...

30 minutes and 49 seconds\[SIGHS\]

30 minutes and 50 secondstaking their level and being like:

30 minutes and 51 seconds"Okay, we are going to work on this level.

30 minutes and 52 secondsWe are going to completely recreate it.

30 minutes and 54 secondsAnd it's going to be a team thing.

30 minutes and 55 secondsAnd you are no longer in charge of it."

30 minutes and 58 secondsThat's gotta be rough.

30 minutes and 59 secondsJOSH: Tim-- I think Tim is just embracing his--

31 minutes and 1 secondlike, now he is the Creative Director also.

31 minutes and 4 secondsMm-hmm.

31 minutes and 6 secondsAMY: And he is a designer.

31 minutes and 7 secondsHe is a game designer.

31 minutes and 9 secondsEMILY: They are-- The designers are orphans.

31 minutes and 12 seconds\[EMILY CHUCKLES\]

31 minutes and 14 secondsUh...

31 minutes and 15 secondsPAUL: Ryan was the Mom?

31 minutes and 16 secondsEMILY: Ryan was Mom.

31 minutes and 18 secondsUh, Ryan had to go somewhere else.

31 minutes and 21 secondsEMILY: I really like the X-ray box room.

31 minutes and 23 secondsI really like the idea of going through

31 minutes and 25 secondsand seeing those things come up.

31 minutes and 26 secondsAnd then having a conversation around there,

31 minutes and 28 secondsI think-- I would want to keep that one.

31 minutes and 31 secondsEMILY: And Ryan was the Lead, and he--

31 minutes and 34 secondsThey went to him for one-on-ones.

31 minutes and 36 secondsOr, like: "Hey, this is not working. Can you look at this?"

31 minutes and 39 secondsAnd... now it's just-- there is--

31 minutes and 42 secondsThere is a house with no head right now.

31 minutes and 44 secondsBut they often have nominated Lauren

31 minutes and 46 secondsto be their interface with the rest of the--

31 minutes and 49 secondsLike: "You go to the Leads meeting and tell us what happened."

31 minutes and 51 secondsLAUREN: For example, one example that got brought up was,

31 minutes and 54 secondsyour, like, stump--

31 minutes and 56 secondsstumps with the pyro, stumps that--

31 minutes and 59 secondsJP: Mm-hmm.

32 minutes and 0 secondsLAUREN: It felt maybe a little-- taken off-guard or something.

32 minutes and 5 secondsJP: Wait, what?

32 minutes and 6 secondsLAUREN: Or, like, Amy got taken off-guard by it maybe?

32 minutes and 9 secondsI think that's what I got.

32 minutes and 10 secondsJP: That's...

32 minutes and 12 secondsShe turned it around super quickly--

32 minutes and 13 secondsThis is the first I'm hearing about this. So, that's a problem.

32 minutes and 15 secondsYeah, I hope that that was okay.

32 minutes and 17 secondsBecause if it's not, then I have big questions about

32 minutes and 21 secondshow we are expected to-- to work together.

32 minutes and 24 secondsIt's weird sometimes, I don't know.

32 minutes and 26 secondsI don't know.

32 minutes and 30 secondsSETH: We are going to start integrating

32 minutes and 31 secondsthe engineers a little bit more in conversations, and try to...

32 minutes and 35 secondsTIM: You know, I'm trying to be more helpful to the level designers.

32 minutes and 38 secondsAnd go to the--

32 minutes and 39 secondsI go to the level design meetings.

32 minutes and 40 secondsAnd it's actually been great, because I've gotten--

32 minutes and 42 secondsI spent some time with the designers and see--

32 minutes and 43 secondsThey are very supportive of each other.

32 minutes and 45 secondsBecause, I think, in that time when there was a lot negativity going on,

32 minutes and 47 secondsI think they learned to rely on each other and trust each other.

32 minutes and 51 secondsASIF: And then the last thing...

32 minutes and 53 secondsUh...

32 minutes and 54 secondsI'm playing around with this,

32 minutes and 55 secondsjust not always treating these as paths, but treating them as blockers as well,

33 minutes and 0 secondssince we are doing powers now.

33 minutes and 1 secondSo, like, if you have a Mental Connection on one path,

33 minutes and 4 secondsmaybe that's preventing you from getting to the next one, and...

33 minutes and 7 secondsAre we ever going to get a presentation on, like, the new Mental Connection,

33 minutes and 10 secondsand what it does and doesn't do, and all that.

33 minutes and 13 secondsLike, is it-- Or did I miss a team meeting?

33 minutes and 16 secondsSETH: Mental Connection has been

33 minutes and 17 secondssuch a problem child, I think, for a long time,

33 minutes and 19 secondsthat people have just been overly cautious about...

33 minutes and 22 seconds"Roll it out."

33 minutes and 25 secondsGIGI: For me to, like--

33 minutes and 26 secondsAnd I know you told me not to worry about this, but...

33 minutes and 30 secondsknowing what is happening in those rooms,

33 minutes and 34 secondsyou know, I know that we are like: "Okay, it's Maternity Roulette."

33 minutes and 38 secondsAnd it's like: "Cool."

33 minutes and 40 secondsBut knowing how it actually functions helps me create a better room?

33 minutes and 46 secondsBut I get stressed, like, saying: "It's Pillchinko!

33 minutes and 49 secondsIt's racing!"

33 minutes and 50 secondsAnd then we don't know what Mental Connection does.

33 minutes and 53 secondsAnd we haven't tested it out.

33 minutes and 55 secondsLike, all of a sudden I see the mechanic, and the potential for it,

33 minutes and 58 secondsand then I would draw on top of it.

34 minutes and 1 secondAnyway, yes, I get it.

34 minutes and 2 seconds"Just make a cool room."

34 minutes and 5 secondsLISETTE: Um, so I'll be just doing whatever it takes to support that today.

34 minutes and 8 secondsI think overall we still need a group meeting

34 minutes and 10 secondsaround Mental Connection and environments,

34 minutes and 12 secondsbecause it's blocking work on the minigames,

34 minutes and 14 secondsand how we are actually going to resolve those.

34 minutes and 16 secondsSo, we need to get a meeting scheduled for that.

34 minutes and 19 secondsPAUL: The latest thing that's getting overhauled

34 minutes and 21 secondsis the Mental Connection.

34 minutes and 23 secondsAnd that...

34 minutes and 25 secondshas gone through lots of different iterations.

34 minutes and 27 secondsMm-hmm. It's still kind of doing that.

34 minutes and 32 secondsANNA: So, we have enemies on platforms.

34 minutes and 39 secondsTIM: And that instigated a punchy fight?

34 minutes and 41 secondsAMY: Oh, it's going to!

34 minutes and 42 seconds-\[TIM CHUCKLES\] -ANNA: It carries you.

34 minutes and 45 secondsIt never had this one, sort of, statement of what it was supposed to do.

34 minutes and 49 secondsUm...

34 minutes and 50 secondsAnd we have a bunch of, like, conflicting needs for it.

34 minutes and 54 secondsTIM: Um...

34 minutes and 55 secondsAnd then, the pathfinding, I was a little confused,

34 minutes and 57 secondsbecause it seemed like you are just following one, like...

35 minutes and 0 secondsI'm not sure what your choices are when you are pathfinding.

35 minutes and 2 secondsLike, are you...

35 minutes and 3 secondsAre you just going from one to one?

35 minutes and 5 secondsOr do you have some choice there?

35 minutes and 6 secondsAMY: So, there are branches.

35 minutes and 8 secondsAnd you are using a power, and you are aiming it.

35 minutes and 11 secondsSo, we are trying to simplify that part of it.

35 minutes and 13 secondsYou know, we always get--

35 minutes and 15 secondsIt always seemed really cool in the beginning of Psychonauts 1

35 minutes and 16 secondsto have, like, three cantilevers in a row, three H poles in a row, because, like:

35 minutes and 19 seconds"Wow, that's cool that I just moved really fast!"

35 minutes and 20 secondsBut really the player didn't really do anything.

35 minutes and 22 secondsThey just kind of, like: "Pom, pom, pom."

35 minutes and 23 secondsAnd-- or rail slides often seem really dynamic and cool,

35 minutes and 26 secondsbut then you are like: "I didn't really--"

35 minutes and 28 secondsAs a player I just kind of sat there.

35 minutes and 29 secondsSo, like-- Like, the Mental Connection thing...

35 minutes and 31 secondsYou just made it look easy.

35 minutes and 33 secondsIt's really actually challenging for the player to do that?

35 minutes and 35 secondsLISETTE: I think what Tim is asking does make sense.

35 minutes and 37 secondsBecause it does feel like you are just following a linear path.

35 minutes and 40 secondsAnd where is the skill element to it?

35 minutes and 43 secondsAnd I am-- I am worried about that.

35 minutes and 45 secondsAMY: That was-- oh, man!

35 minutes and 46 secondsThat was all part of Hollis.

35 minutes and 48 secondsI feel like every power just reflects...

35 minutes and 51 secondswhere the team was at with whatever level they were working on.

35 minutes and 54 secondsSo, this is, I think, the first-- biggest challenge

35 minutes and 58 secondsin-- in sort of, like, collaborating with a bunch of different departments.

36 minutes and 3 secondsAnd I guess Tim is a department...

36 minutes and 4 seconds\[CHUCKLES\]

36 minutes and 6 seconds...in that description.

36 minutes and 7 secondsTo try to deliver something that can please everyone.

36 minutes and 11 secondsI mean, we are going to land on something in the next few weeks.

36 minutes and 14 secondsSomething has to-- something has to be decided.

36 minutes and 18 secondsANDY: So, what do we need to do to decide how to move forward on this?

36 minutes and 24 secondsTIM: Well, I mean...

36 minutes and 25 secondsIt feels like it's--

36 minutes and 27 secondsUh, you know, I think that I like the direction.

36 minutes and 29 secondsI was just bringing up risks.

36 minutes and 30 secondsI feel like that's something I would like to see proved out, you know?

36 minutes and 34 secondsI don't know how--

36 minutes and 35 secondsI don't know what is blocking, like, the mocking up of the--

36 minutes and 37 secondsI guess it's a decision about the design of the octopus

36 minutes and 40 secondsthat blocks the actual prototyping of the octopus combat--

36 minutes and 44 secondsAMY: Whether or not you like the idea at all.

36 minutes and 46 seconds\[TIM VOCALIZES DOUBT\]

36 minutes and 48 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

36 minutes and 50 secondsANDY: Great!

36 minutes and 51 seconds...would you be happy with?

36 minutes and 52 seconds\[MUSIC\]

36 minutes and 54 secondsOh, this is-- What are we talking about right now?

36 minutes and 56 secondsI don't know, what can I do?

36 minutes and 57 seconds"Is there anything you'd be happy with creatively, Tim?"

37 minutes and 0 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -"Would you ever approve anything?"

37 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

37 minutes and 17 secondsEMILY: Sometimes you get burnt out.

37 minutes and 19 secondsYou get burnt out after a while

37 minutes and 20 secondstrying to make the same, like, two things work together.

37 minutes and 23 seconds-I need a new-- -You need new thinking paper?

37 minutes and 26 secondsI need new thinking paper.

37 minutes and 27 secondsLike... I don't know!

37 minutes and 30 secondsZACH: That was actually super cool.

37 minutes and 31 secondsHow you were on top of that tower,

37 minutes and 33 secondsand you jumped off,

37 minutes and 34 secondsand then you picked, like, which way to go,

37 minutes and 36 secondsbecause there were a bunch of nodes down below you.

37 minutes and 38 secondsTAZIO: So, we'll do something like that, but, like, less shit.

37 minutes and 41 secondsJEREMY: Oh, cool.

37 minutes and 43 secondsLISETTE: I think Hollis is just its own... pain point.

37 minutes and 47 secondsAnd I think Tim trying to use the process of Psychonauts 1 with you guys

37 minutes and 50 secondswithout fully understanding the process that got us here

37 minutes and 54 secondsis where we kind of hit a big road block.

37 minutes and 57 secondsGIGI: Okay.

37 minutes and 58 secondsLISETTE: And I think a lot of these last few weeks

38 minutes and 0 secondsis actually Tim figuring out: "What-- what is the process we've used?"

38 minutes and 4 secondsAnd how does that meld with what he has in his head that worked before?

38 minutes and 9 secondsYou got Hollis'd!

38 minutes and 10 seconds-I got Hollis'd! -\[GIGI LAUGHS\]

38 minutes and 12 secondsLISETTE: Everybody who has worked on this level...

38 minutes and 14 secondscomes out stressed on the other side.

38 minutes and 16 secondsSlap! You got Hollis'd!

38 minutes and 18 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

38 minutes and 19 secondsProbably going to be one of our best levels.

38 minutes and 21 secondsGIGI: Probably.

38 minutes and 23 secondsIt better be!

38 minutes and 24 seconds\[MUSIC\]

38 minutes and 30 secondsGEOFF: This one ended up being good,

38 minutes and 31 secondsbecause you still need to deflect the stick

38 minutes and 34 secondsto connect to the next one, but not by much.

38 minutes and 36 secondsYeah.

38 minutes and 38 secondsGEOFF: And also, if you miss, it's actually really easy to fall.

38 minutes and 42 seconds-\[AMY LAUGHS\] -Oh, shit!

38 minutes and 43 seconds-That's super cool! -That's pretty fun, you guys.

38 minutes and 45 seconds-Oh my god! -ZACH: Like, we need more of that.

38 minutes and 47 secondsZACH: Somehow.

38 minutes and 48 secondsGEOFF: Like, falling and then catching yourself,

38 minutes and 50 secondsit is super fun!

38 minutes and 51 secondsThere could be some cool speedrun strats in here.

38 minutes and 53 secondsIt's actually pretty cool if you have to, for some of them, jump out.

38 minutes and 56 secondsLike, a leap of faith kind of thing.

38 minutes and 57 secondsAnd then you shoot it out!

38 minutes and 58 secondsWe put a figment somewhere or something that says that you can do this.

39 minutes and 2 seconds"You can do this!"

39 minutes and 4 secondsI don't think it was on purpose,

39 minutes and 5 secondsbut, like, the way the camera sort of bounces...

39 minutes and 7 seconds-That is very much on purpose. -No, it is very much on purpose.

39 minutes and 8 secondsIt's great! It helps a lot.

39 minutes and 10 secondsAARON: I've got a little bit of anticipation

39 minutes and 11 secondsand a little bit of bounce when you, like, get in there.

39 minutes and 14 secondsAnd it's supposed to feel real stretchy as you are flying along,

39 minutes and 16 secondsbecause it makes you feel fast.

39 minutes and 17 secondsGEOFF: Yeah, that was--

39 minutes and 18 secondsReally enjoyable was actually falling and catching myself.

39 minutes and 21 secondsYes!

39 minutes and 22 seconds-I don't know why it's so fun, but it is. -It's so satisfying!

39 minutes and 24 secondsBecause it's-- I don't know! It's really fun!

39 minutes and 26 secondsGEOFF: Let's just change it back to what it was before.

39 minutes and 28 seconds\[AMY EXHALES\]

39 minutes and 29 secondsIt sounds like people are a lot more excited about it now.

39 minutes and 32 seconds-Yeah. -Yeah, now-- well, yeah.

39 minutes and 33 secondsI can see, like, now where it's--

39 minutes and 35 secondswhere now, like--

39 minutes and 37 secondsplaces that a challenge could appear that would make complete sense

39 minutes and 39 secondsand it's, like, there is more than enough options

39 minutes and 41 secondsfor how to accomplish that.

39 minutes and 42 secondsSo, it seems like it's got a really good skeleton now.

39 minutes and 45 secondsEMILY: Like, see--

39 minutes and 46 secondsSee, we have, like, this already going on up here.

39 minutes and 48 seconds-GEOFF: Yeah, yeah. -Yeah!

39 minutes and 49 secondsBecause we are not necessarily going with this,

39 minutes and 51 secondswe are just, like, coming up with a whole bunch of concepts, but--

39 minutes and 53 secondsbut I can see that in here already!

39 minutes and 56 seconds-It's done! -GEOFF: Yeah, no, yeah.

39 minutes and 57 seconds\[MUSIC\]

40 minutes and 0 secondsLISETTE: All right, let's roll.

40 minutes and 1 secondHoly moly!

40 minutes and 2 secondsHere is some art.

40 minutes and 3 secondsLISETTE: These ladies have been doing a lot of art!

40 minutes and 7 secondsWe are at what? Sixty drawings for the third version?

40 minutes and 10 secondsMore. More!

40 minutes and 11 secondsLISETTE: We are at what? Sixty?

40 minutes and 13 seconds-Really like seventy something. -LISETTE: Seventy.

40 minutes and 14 secondsANDY: But who is counting?

40 minutes and 16 secondsLISETTE: All right!

40 minutes and 17 seconds...the exterior of her hospital.

40 minutes and 19 secondsAnd she is the hospital.

40 minutes and 21 secondsUm, the idea is that she is so consumed with her work

40 minutes and 24 secondsthat she is now becoming her work.

40 minutes and 26 secondsSo, when you first see her in her mental world,

40 minutes and 28 secondsyou see her as the hospital.

40 minutes and 30 secondsUm, and then you enter the ER.

40 minutes and 32 secondsAnd the ER is a relative gravity space inside of a pill bottle.

40 minutes and 36 secondsSo it's important for those windows to be, like, orange,

40 minutes and 39 secondsor to have, like, a glass entrance, so that we can get

40 minutes and 41 secondsthat sense of being inside of a pill bottle when you are in there.

40 minutes and 44 secondsAnd where does Raz-- where does the player stand?

40 minutes and 47 secondsAre they down-- where is the player?

40 minutes and 48 secondsLike, to see-- to see him,

40 minutes and 49 secondsit seems like you have to be up there, maybe hopping on the beds?

40 minutes and 52 secondsLike, you are hopping from gurney to gurney,

40 minutes and 54 secondsstepping on the patients, and just...

40 minutes and 55 secondsLISETTE: We did like the idea of jumping around on beds,

40 minutes and 58 secondsand it would be interesting to bring that back.

41 minutes and 0 secondsGIGI: Yeah.

41 minutes and 1 secondAnd we don't even have to make it all logically work, right?

41 minutes and 3 secondsThis is just like when you are dreaming

41 minutes and 4 secondsand someone is floating next to you, and they are, like...

41 minutes and 8 secondsJOSH: Yeah.

41 minutes and 9 seconds(Nice room shape, Gigi!)

41 minutes and 10 secondsIt's a beautiful room shape!

41 minutes and 12 secondsWhat's the shape of the room?

41 minutes and 13 seconds-It's a... circle. -"It's a fucking circle, Tim!"

41 minutes and 14 seconds\[GIGI CHUCKLES\]

41 minutes and 16 secondsNo boxes!

41 minutes and 17 secondsANDY: How far off are we from being able to make any of this?

41 minutes and 19 secondsLISETTE: Um... I think the class room--

41 minutes and 22 secondsI think there is enough there for the space to be built.

41 minutes and 25 secondsANDY: But it sounds like you are cool with the ideas?

41 minutes and 28 secondsI like all those ideas!

41 minutes and 30 secondsLISETTE: And I'll get an updated version of a few of these.

41 minutes and 33 secondsAnd I'll find a blackboard to keep this up somewhere.

41 minutes and 35 secondsCool.

41 minutes and 36 secondsCool, awesome!

41 minutes and 38 seconds-GEOFF: Hurray. -Progress.

41 minutes and 39 seconds-TAZIO: Beer! -LISETTE: Yay, decisions!
