## Episode Transcript

12 secondsTIM: I didn't like the way-- I didn't like the way it came out, and...

15 secondsAMY: How could I do it better?

17 secondsBecause what I'm hearing from you is that you don't want to hear it at all.

20 seconds...and that we are trying, and that I should just have faith.

22 secondsAnd I've heard that so many times in this room about so many things.

26 secondsTIM: I don't think anyone said: "Just have faith."

28 secondsAnd I don't think anyone said: "Don't bring this stuff up."

31 secondsThat's bullshit.

32 seconds\[MUSIC\]

1 minute and 6 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

1 minute and 7 secondsEverybody, we have been acquired.

1 minute and 8 secondsXbox-- no.

1 minute and 9 secondsMicrosoft-- one of those companies up there.

1 minute and 11 secondsRyan will be leaving Double Fine.

1 minute and 14 secondsAnd I'm kind of stepping into it.

1 minute and 16 seconds"Okay. Well, now things are going to change completely again."

1 minute and 18 secondsTIM: "Are we hitting our goals with this level?

1 minute and 20 secondsIs this level Psychonautical?

1 minute and 21 secondsIs it good? Do we love it?"

1 minute and 22 secondsEMILY: Hollis is a little bit of a problem child.

1 minute and 26 secondsI don't know.

1 minute and 27 secondsI want to stop all this talking right now.

1 minute and 28 secondsWhat is the right amount of work to do for the rest of this game?

1 minute and 31 secondsTIM: We are against crunch mode.

1 minute and 32 secondsWe talk about it publicly. We talk about it with the team.

1 minute and 34 secondsRUSTY: We kind of all made a pact with each other that

1 minute and 36 secondsthat would not happen again.

1 minute and 40 seconds\[INDISTINCT CHATTERING\]

1 minute and 50 seconds-Finally! -ASIF: Good job, Greg.

1 minute and 52 secondsCAMDEN: My favorite thing about that was, uh...

1 minute and 56 secondsTim backed up what he has always said.

1 minute and 59 secondsWhich is he wants to take care of people.

2 minutes and 0 secondsWhich was...

2 minutes and 2 secondsI really got that he...

2 minutes and 4 secondskind of went out of his way to make sure that happened.

2 minutes and 6 secondsSo, I was happy about that.

2 minutes and 8 secondsIt's good to have a CEO like that.

2 minutes and 11 seconds-Hi, all. -Hey, bud.

2 minutes and 13 secondsI opened an e-trade account.

2 minutes and 15 seconds-Why? -Don't know.

2 minutes and 17 secondsCAMDEN: I think everybody has had different perspective since then.

2 minutes and 21 secondsI've never seen money like that here.

2 minutes and 24 secondsI've been taught in the audio industry: "If you do see that, like, enjoy it."

2 minutes and 29 secondsLike, that's not why I got into this industry.

2 minutes and 31 secondsI have been doing this for nearly ten years.

2 minutes and 34 secondsAnd I've spent a lot of effort,

2 minutes and 36 secondsand lost a lot of money,

2 minutes and 39 secondsum, making sure that I'm working for independent studios.

2 minutes and 43 seconds\[LAUGHS\]

2 minutes and 45 secondsSo, the day that that was announced,

2 minutes and 47 secondsI was like: "Wow!"

2 minutes and 49 secondsThat-- that was like a rug being pulled out from under me.

2 minutes and 52 secondsUm...

2 minutes and 53 secondsI think it was probably the right thing to do for Double Fine.

2 minutes and 57 secondsI mean, I'd rather Double Fine exist than not exist.

2 minutes and 59 secondsBut it also just sort of, like, settled that, like:

3 minutes and 2 seconds"Okay, I didn't know what we were going to do."

3 minutes and 5 secondsBecause we could not have shipped these levels as they are.

3 minutes and 8 secondsFor me, I don't know.

3 minutes and 11 secondsUh, I think Double Fine is still the best place in the industry to work.

3 minutes and 15 secondsAnd I'm glad that that's sticking around.

3 minutes and 18 secondsTIM: Well, I mean, we took the decision really seriously.

3 minutes and 21 secondsAnd we knew that some people might not like it.

3 minutes and 23 secondsBut we were very open about what we were thinking about.

3 minutes and 25 secondsWe told them our reasons why.

3 minutes and 27 secondsSo far, I don't think anyone has left over it.

3 minutes and 30 secondsEat my shit!

3 minutes and 31 secondsBut I think it'll be good.

3 minutes and 32 secondsI think it will be good.

3 minutes and 33 secondsOr cut to the part in the documentary where I made fun of Microsoft

3 minutes and 36 secondsfor telling us to cut the humor out of Psychonauts.

3 minutes and 39 secondsHumor should be incorporated into the game as a secondary

3 minutes and 42 secondsor a supporting characteristic.

3 minutes and 43 secondsHumor should be simplified and made immediately apparent.

3 minutes and 47 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

3 minutes and 48 secondsSee, that's the thing.

3 minutes and 49 secondsThey are not like that anymore.

3 minutes and 51 secondsYeah, it is a whole different group of people.

3 minutes and 52 secondsAnd a different philosophy that, I think, comes from the top down

3 minutes and 55 secondsabout how to integrate studios.

3 minutes and 57 secondsWhat's Friday going to be?

3 minutes and 59 seconds-Are we having a team meeting on Friday? -We are.

4 minutes and 1 secondBecause we are going to be doing it in the afternoon.

4 minutes and 3 secondsBecause I moved it from the morning, because of the--

4 minutes and 5 secondsof the Booty appearance.

4 minutes and 6 seconds-ANDY: So, um... -\[KEE CHUCKLES\]

4 minutes and 8 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

4 minutes and 9 secondsNAOKO: At some point that has to stop being funny, you guys.

4 minutes and 12 secondsI'm saying do it as much as possible now.

4 minutes and 14 secondsGet that out of your system.

4 minutes and 15 seconds-Booty, Booty, Booty. -\[LAUGHTER\]

4 minutes and 17 secondsHe loves Tutti Frutti, and his son's named Rudy.

4 minutes and 19 secondsCome on.

4 minutes and 21 secondsPAUL: And then we had Mr. Booty.

4 minutes and 22 secondsYes, we slide the roller coaster into the final loop,

4 minutes and 26 secondsand Mr. Booty is there.

4 minutes and 29 secondsHello!

4 minutes and 30 secondsThank you, thank you, thank you.

4 minutes and 31 secondsHello! You are on TV. I'm Caryl.

4 minutes and 33 seconds\[CHATTERING\]

4 minutes and 36 secondsTIM: Matt Booty...

4 minutes and 37 secondswho is the, um...

4 minutes and 39 secondsHe was the person actually who changed my mind about acquisition.

4 minutes and 41 secondsBecause I was not looking to get acquired.

4 minutes and 43 secondsAnd I asked him.

4 minutes and 44 secondsYou know, because we were talking about it.

4 minutes and 45 secondsAnd I asked him how it had gone in the past

4 minutes and 46 secondsand what their philosophy was about it?

4 minutes and 48 secondsOur success comes down to one thing.

4 minutes and 51 secondsCreating great games that players love.

4 minutes and 55 secondsAnd great games come from great developers.

4 minutes and 59 secondsTIM: And when he explained the idea of the limited integration.

5 minutes and 3 secondsHow they are not trying to turn them into Microsoft studios,

5 minutes and 6 secondsand hang their logos up on the front door,

5 minutes and 7 secondsand change our emails over,

5 minutes and 8 secondsand get us to do things differently.

5 minutes and 10 secondsThey want us to just stay who we are and do things our way.

5 minutes and 23 secondsTIM: And I wanted him to come down

5 minutes and 25 secondsand let the team ask-- ask all the questions they wanted of him.

5 minutes and 29 secondsMATT: Just quickly a little bit about me.

5 minutes and 31 secondsAnd I only share that just so that I hope I can impart

5 minutes and 34 secondsthat I have a real deep appreciation

5 minutes and 37 secondsfor the craft of making games and what you do day-to-day.

5 minutes and 41 secondsI started making games back at a place in Chicago called Midway.

5 minutes and 43 secondsI worked on pinball games and video games.

5 minutes and 46 secondsUm, it's funny seeing, like, Mortal Kombat up there.

5 minutes and 48 secondsI worked with Ed Boon

5 minutes and 50 secondsback when on his whiteboard somebody walked in

5 minutes and 52 secondsand crossed out the C and put a K.

5 minutes and 54 seconds-So I remember when that happened. -\[CHUCKLING\]

5 minutes and 56 secondsI have a pretty strict rule about, uh, not sticking my nose into game design.

6 minutes and 1 secondI am here to tell you, and I will say

6 minutes and 4 secondsthat our goal is to change

6 minutes and 6 secondsas absolutely little about this studio as possible.

6 minutes and 10 secondsUm...

6 minutes and 11 secondsOne of the things, and then we can just open it up to questions.

6 minutes and 14 secondsBut I just want to address one thing, because it kept coming up.

6 minutes and 17 secondsI was surprised to hear how much the moonlighting topic came up.

6 minutes and 21 secondsSo, I wanted to just, like, address that one head-on.

6 minutes and 24 secondsTIM: You know, well, it's, like--

6 minutes and 25 secondsmost of our concern is because we are a creativity first company.

6 minutes and 27 secondsThere are some questions about ownership.

6 minutes and 29 secondsA lot of people have side creative things they do.

6 minutes and 32 secondsThey write children's books or play in bands or something.

6 minutes and 34 secondsAnd they want to make sure that

6 minutes and 35 secondsthat will be able to continue under Microsoft.

6 minutes and 38 secondsMATT: Where the moonlighting only really starts to be something

6 minutes and 41 secondsthat we even really need to have a conversation about

6 minutes and 43 secondsis if you are making something that directly competes or conflicts

6 minutes and 47 secondswith what happens here.

6 minutes and 49 secondsAnd that really is going to boil down to making a game.

6 minutes and 52 secondsGIGI: It's just that--

6 minutes and 53 secondsThe things is, it's, like--

6 minutes and 55 secondsCorporations like Microsoft always have the advantage.

6 minutes and 58 secondsBecause I've seen this happen to friends of mine

7 minutes and 0 secondswho have released games, and this has happened,

7 minutes and 2 secondsand then the company has gone after them.

7 minutes and 4 secondsAnd they were, like--

7 minutes and 5 secondsEven though they had a nice little handshake agreement,

7 minutes and 7 secondsthey still ended up having to pay that company.

7 minutes and 10 secondsMATT: So, if you really want to go run a start-up,

7 minutes and 12 secondsquit and go run a start-up, right?

7 minutes and 14 secondsAnd so, I'm not trying to chase anybody away.

7 minutes and 16 secondsThat's not trying to be harsh language.

7 minutes and 18 secondsBut if you work on something,

7 minutes and 19 secondsand suddenly it starts to pick up traction.

7 minutes and 21 secondsAnd you are like: "Hey, this thing is going big."

7 minutes and 23 secondsI think you've got a choice as a person to make.

7 minutes and 25 secondsThe reality is that once something is kind of in these walls,

7 minutes and 29 secondsDouble Fine owns it, right?

7 minutes and 30 secondsTIM: Where that comes into conflict a little bit

7 minutes and 32 secondsis where we do this Amnesia Fortnight pitch.

7 minutes and 34 secondsAnd we have always as a company said that we don't own the ideas

7 minutes and 37 secondsuntil we actually produce them in the Amnesia Fortnight game jam.

7 minutes and 39 secondsBut before people submit them,

7 minutes and 41 secondsthey work on them in their own time, on their own computers.

7 minutes and 43 secondsAnd they do at some point tell the ideas.

7 minutes and 46 secondsAnd a lot of them don't get selected.

7 minutes and 47 secondsAnd we've always maintained that we don't own those.

7 minutes and 50 secondsYeah, we are going to have to sort through that.

7 minutes and 51 secondsBecause I don't know! Some day down the road

7 minutes and 53 secondswe might want to go back and say:

7 minutes and 55 seconds"Ha! That was a great idea, you know? We should go make that game."

7 minutes and 58 seconds-MATT: Right? -TIM: Yeah.

7 minutes and 59 secondsTIM: I mean it is something we have to figure out,

8 minutes and 0 secondsbecause we are doing that process right now.

8 minutes and 1 secondAnd people are already pitching based on that promise that I already made.

8 minutes and 4 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -TIM: That we don't own them.

8 minutes and 6 secondsMATT: That's great. No--

8 minutes and 7 secondsTIM: Because that's what we've done for years.

8 minutes and 8 secondsMATT: So, yeah, yep, yep.

8 minutes and 10 secondsAnd I'm not out, like--

8 minutes and 11 secondsAnything that you've done like that, we will honor that, right?

8 minutes and 15 secondsBut I would say that before you do the next one,

8 minutes and 16 secondswe gotta clean that up a little bit.

8 minutes and 18 secondsBecause it's a-- it's a messy boundary, right?

8 minutes and 22 secondsCAMDEN: The one thing I saw was, uh...

8 minutes and 24 secondsUh, the subject about pitches.

8 minutes and 27 secondsUh, when Booty was like: "We should have a discussion about that."

8 minutes and 32 secondsI think that's fair.

8 minutes and 34 secondsAnd, like, he didn't come out and just be like:

8 minutes and 36 seconds"Oh, no, you can't do this. And we should--

8 minutes and 39 secondsYou know, we have to--

8 minutes and 40 secondsYou have to go back on your word, and, like, do all this stuff."

8 minutes and 42 secondsLike, the fact that he said: "Well, next time we need to talk

8 minutes and 45 secondsabout how that's going to happen."

8 minutes and 47 secondsUh, I think that's fine.

8 minutes and 49 secondsI think that's-- And I think he is right.

8 minutes and 51 secondsI think it is about protection for both parties.

8 minutes and 53 secondsUm, and I noticed Tim was surprised by that.

8 minutes and 56 secondsBut that's, I think-- that's something good for us to learn.

8 minutes and 59 secondsBecause we never had to think about that.

9 minutes and 1 secondMATT: Over time you are just going to have to--

9 minutes and 3 secondswe have to establish trust, right?

9 minutes and 5 secondsLike, trust is earned, it's not given.

9 minutes and 6 secondsSo we gotta earn your trust.

9 minutes and 8 secondsI'm confident that we can work out something that's good for everybody.

9 minutes and 13 secondsMm-hmm.

9 minutes and 14 secondsYeah.

9 minutes and 15 secondsTIM: And they-- So, they had tough questions about that.

9 minutes and 17 secondsI think he answered them.

9 minutes and 19 secondsAll right. Well, thanks for coming!

9 minutes and 20 seconds-Thank you all! -Everybody, thank you.

9 minutes and 22 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

9 minutes and 25 secondsGood job, young man! Good job.

9 minutes and 26 secondsWell spoken, well spoken.

9 minutes and 27 secondsTIM: But in general, you know--

9 minutes and 29 secondsAll those questions make it seem like people are really nervous about it.

9 minutes and 31 secondsAnd I think some people are--

9 minutes and 33 secondshave a lot of questions about the acquisition.

9 minutes and 34 secondsBut I think most people are just really excited

9 minutes and 36 secondsto be able to... focus on the creative side

9 minutes and 39 secondsand not worry so much about all the deals.

9 minutes and 41 secondsBecause we were very transparent about the deals.

9 minutes and 43 secondsWe were like: "Well, we are pitching this publisher next week.

9 minutes and 45 secondsAnd that last publisher, that we pitched to last week,

9 minutes and 48 secondsthey passed on us, and so..."

9 minutes and 49 secondsYou know, they've heard all these stories.

9 minutes and 51 secondsAnd I think they are probably looking forward

9 minutes and 52 secondsto not hearing those stories anymore.

9 minutes and 57 secondsWe are all Microsoft people.

9 minutes and 58 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

10 minutes and 1 secondYep, just sixty of the best Microsoft people there are.

10 minutes and 3 secondsTUCKER: Andy is of the belief that, uh...

10 minutes and 6 seconds...as the deadlines get more and more looming,

10 minutes and 8 secondsand Microsoft remembers they've spent millions of dollars that, uh...

10 minutes and 11 seconds-Call me a pessimist. -...honeymoon phase may end.

10 minutes and 15 secondsThe guys who are in charge--

10 minutes and 17 secondsDude, look, Matt Booty, Phil Spencer...

10 minutes and 19 secondsTop-notch dudes.

10 minutes and 21 secondsSuper respect those guys.

10 minutes and 22 secondsThey are great. They are going to come in, smile, point.

10 minutes and 24 seconds"You guys keep on doing what you do! Woo!"

10 minutes and 26 secondsWe all are going to be like: "Yeah!"

10 minutes and 28 secondsTwo days later Steve from accounting and Bill from marketing shows up,

10 minutes and 32 secondsthen we have problems.

10 minutes and 34 secondsTIM: I don't think, uh... they are coming to the Christmas party, it's just us.

10 minutes and 37 seconds-TUCKER: So, no? -So, no.

10 minutes and 38 secondsTIM: So, unfortunately, I have saved the worst for last.

10 minutes and 40 secondsI have some bad news that I would like to share.

10 minutes and 42 secondsUh, I normally don't talk about--

10 minutes and 44 secondsin this meeting announce when people are leaving the company.

10 minutes and 46 secondsBut this one is a very important one.

10 minutes and 47 secondsIt's someone who's been here about ten years.

10 minutes and 50 secondsWho's been here a long time.

10 minutes and 51 secondsAnd they are leaving on good terms,

10 minutes and 53 secondsthey are a friend-- family of the company.

10 minutes and 54 secondsBut I think we've known as soon as--

10 minutes and 56 secondsAs soon as we started talking about acquisition,

10 minutes and 57 secondsthere was this potential for Greg's job to change a lot.

11 minutes and 1 secondAnd a lot of his job being worrying about money,

11 minutes and 3 secondsyou know, is going away, so...

11 minutes and 5 secondsUm, although, we could, you know, invent

11 minutes and 8 secondsa lot of new responsibilities for Greg to do.

11 minutes and 10 secondsThere is still stuff he is working on.

11 minutes and 11 secondsUm, I think Greg is understandably looking for the next step in his adventure.

11 minutes and 17 secondsAnd is going to be looking for that outside the company.

11 minutes and 25 secondsPAUL: Mic you up one last time.

11 minutes and 28 secondsGREG: Yeah.

11 minutes and 30 secondsI didn't think about going, um...

11 minutes and 33 secondsever.

11 minutes and 34 seconds\[CHUCKLES\]

11 minutes and 35 secondsUntil all the Microsoft stuff wrapped up.

11 minutes and 39 secondsAnd I think we did a good job of, like, holding onto what, um...

11 minutes and 44 secondsis special about Double Fine.

11 minutes and 46 secondsAnd making sure that was protected and not going to be, um...

11 minutes and 50 secondstouched, as much as possible, by Microsoft.

11 minutes and 53 secondsAnd that we could kind of just keep doing what we do.

11 minutes and 56 secondsUm, but, kind of my job was the one thing that, um...

12 minutes and 1 secondwe weren't able to hold onto, I feel like.

12 minutes and 3 secondsAnd it's been-- when you think about Greg's job

12 minutes and 7 secondsand that being a journey to actually set us right,

12 minutes and 9 secondsand have us not worry about money anymore,

12 minutes and 11 secondsyou pretty much did that.

12 minutes and 12 secondsSo, job done.

12 minutes and 14 secondsGood job!

12 minutes and 15 seconds\[CLAPPING\]

12 minutes and 16 seconds\[MUSIC\]

12 minutes and 19 secondsYeah, that's what made it so exciting.

12 minutes and 21 secondsThe crazy roller coaster.

12 minutes and 23 secondsThe fact that we were able to ride it out,

12 minutes and 25 secondsmake it work so long,

12 minutes and 27 secondsand end up in such a good spot...

12 minutes and 29 secondsis a real testament to a lot of people working real hard over here.

12 minutes and 33 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

12 minutes and 36 secondsGREG: Not going to make it easy, huh?

12 minutes and 38 seconds\[GREG LAUGHS\]

12 minutes and 40 secondsYeah, I'm going to be going to PlayStation.

12 minutes and 43 secondsWhich is kind of funny in the scope of things.

12 minutes and 46 secondsJust...

12 minutes and 47 secondsUh, I guess... a competitor of Microsoft?

12 minutes and 50 secondsUm, but we are-- um, you know, we owe--

12 minutes and 52 secondswe owe, um... Greg a lot.

12 minutes and 54 seconds\[MUSIC\]

12 minutes and 56 secondsGREG: I love the guy. Uh... he is the best.

12 minutes and 58 secondsI mean, it was the reason I wanted to come here.

13 minutes and 0 secondsIt's the reason everybody wanted to come here.

13 minutes and 2 secondsHe's been the best mentor and leader, and, uh...

13 minutes and 5 secondsYou know, I couldn't have wished for a better last decade of my life, but--

13 minutes and 10 seconds-I'll still be around. -Not the last decade of your life.

13 minutes and 11 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

13 minutes and 13 secondsHopefully not, yeah.

13 minutes and 14 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

13 minutes and 17 secondsIt's going to be a big change, but, um...

13 minutes and 19 secondsI don't think anything will-- will be able to change stuff between us.

13 minutes and 23 secondsThank you, Greg.

13 minutes and 28 secondsWe are going to talk about Greg leaving and get really sad?

13 minutes and 30 seconds-Aw-w! -How about that Greg though?

13 minutes and 32 secondsI don't want to get depressed.

13 minutes and 34 seconds-I can't go to the thing. -You can't?

13 minutes and 36 secondsHe's been here for ten years, is that right?

13 minutes and 38 secondsI'll drink for you.

13 minutes and 39 seconds-Yep. -That's crazy.

13 minutes and 40 secondsYou can bring this.

13 minutes and 42 secondsThat's crazy!

13 minutes and 43 seconds\[MUSIC\]

13 minutes and 48 secondsGREG: The Kickstarter was obviously, like, something I'll never forget.

13 minutes and 52 secondsAnd then, being able to have the opportunity

13 minutes and 54 secondsto lead production on that,

13 minutes and 55 secondsand get to work alongside Tim on an adventure game, um...

13 minutes and 59 secondsthat was inspired by all of the games he made that I grew up playing,

14 minutes and 3 secondsuh, is unforgettable.

14 minutes and 5 seconds\[MUSIC\]

14 minutes and 8 secondsThe fact that we are doing Psychonauts 2 is crazy now.

14 minutes and 12 secondsAnd obviously there's been a lot of changes on the project.

14 minutes and 15 secondsIt feels like the team is really coming together now and clicking.

14 minutes and 20 secondsI think, especially, the Amnesia Fortnight recently was really good.

14 minutes and 23 secondsTo get people to take a break

14 minutes and 24 secondsand get them collaborating with different people.

14 minutes and 27 secondsA lot of, like, going back to the basics,

14 minutes and 29 secondsand figuring out what's working and what's not.

14 minutes and 31 secondsUm, which was nice to see.

14 minutes and 33 seconds\[MUSIC\]

14 minutes and 38 secondsCARYL: Uh, over half of you said it was awesome.

14 minutes and 41 secondsWhich is cool.

14 minutes and 42 secondsSo, the vast majority of people, um...

14 minutes and 44 secondshad a really good experience in AF this year.

14 minutes and 46 secondsWhich is-- which was great-- great for the company.

14 minutes and 49 secondsNinety percent of the people thought that their project leads did great.

14 minutes and 53 secondsAsif. A gracious, inspired, and encouraging team lead.

14 minutes and 57 secondsAw-w!

14 minutes and 58 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -Aw-w!

14 minutes and 59 secondsSo, it was really great

15 minutes and 0 secondsto sort of see everybody really work with everybody else

15 minutes and 3 secondsand appreciate each other.

15 minutes and 5 seconds-MALENA: Hello! -Hi!

15 minutes and 8 secondsThere we go!

15 minutes and 9 secondsWow, she can dance now too!

15 minutes and 11 secondsYeah!

15 minutes and 14 secondsBut, anyway, whatever you guys--

15 minutes and 15 secondsHey, welcome back to the project, everybody!

15 minutes and 18 secondsIt's good to have you back!

15 minutes and 20 secondsWe got four whole new levels that we are working on.

15 minutes and 21 secondsNew level teams.

15 minutes and 23 secondsI'm excited about getting back to work on Psychonauts 2, because...

15 minutes and 26 secondsUm, I think I learned a lot, personally, in that last, um...

15 minutes and 30 secondsmilestone with Hollis.

15 minutes and 32 secondsSo, then we are not--

15 minutes and 33 secondsWe are just planning to not hit first playable then?

15 minutes and 36 seconds\[MUSIC\]

15 minutes and 40 secondsAnybody?

15 minutes and 41 secondsGEOFF: I think Hollis suffered from a couple of different things.

15 minutes and 44 secondsLike, growing pains.

15 minutes and 46 secondsAnd changing the way we develop levels.

15 minutes and 49 secondsTIM: That-- that caused a lot of confusion

15 minutes and 50 secondswhich, I think, added a lot of uncertainty.

15 minutes and 52 secondsAnd that-- that level kind of, um...

15 minutes and 55 secondsIt's new ideas got really convoluted and floundered for a while.

15 minutes and 58 seconds\[MUSIC\]

16 minutes and 1 secondGEOFF: Pillchinko. That will be some sort of

16 minutes and 3 secondsorgan Pillchinko machine eventually.

16 minutes and 5 secondsBEN: Yep.

16 minutes and 6 secondsAnd, yeah-- I mean, it's a...

16 minutes and 9 secondsSo, it looks like a pharmacy? Is that right?

16 minutes and 10 seconds-TIM: That's the thing, right? -BEN: It is a pharmacy, yeah.

16 minutes and 13 secondsTIM: That level has a lot of promise.

16 minutes and 14 secondsBut it's not fully as far along as we would like it to be.

16 minutes and 17 seconds\[MUSIC\]

16 minutes and 19 secondsTIM: What the! Oh my god!

16 minutes and 21 secondsSETH: Yep, so, we talked about how we needed

16 minutes and 23 secondsto make that so he falls into the ambulance on this.

16 minutes and 27 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

16 minutes and 28 secondsBEN: So, right now the ambulance starts up at the top.

16 minutes and 30 seconds-SETH: And it's so painful! -BEN: And up is down, and down is up.

16 minutes and 33 secondsBEN: And I'm going to fix all of this today!

16 minutes and 37 secondsTIM: I think that looks kind of cool back there though.

16 minutes and 40 secondsIt looked a little too suggestive.

16 minutes and 41 secondsBut other than that, I think, it was kind of cool with the shadows.

16 minutes and 44 secondsTIM: I think we know what the level is now.

16 minutes and 46 secondsSo, we can come back to it later with a fresh start.

16 minutes and 48 secondsBecause I think the team was a little burnt-out on it

16 minutes and 50 secondsby the time we were done.

16 minutes and 52 secondsBut I think it's going to be good now.

16 minutes and 54 secondsI think, overall, it is still better that we rebooted it,

16 minutes and 56 secondsand came up with new ideas for it.

16 minutes and 57 secondsBecause the new ideas are much more...

16 minutes and 59 secondsfitting to the theme of hospital and casino, you know?

17 minutes and 2 secondsIt looks much more like a crazy world that would only exist in a dream.

17 minutes and 6 secondsSo, I like it.

17 minutes and 7 secondsBut it needs a little more time.

17 minutes and 8 seconds\[MUSIC\]

17 minutes and 10 secondsANDY: We did really good this sprint,

17 minutes and 13 secondsin terms of, like, the tasks that got entered.

17 minutes and 15 secondsUm...

17 minutes and 16 secondsBut we landed--

17 minutes and 17 secondsSeventy percent of what we committed to getting done got done.

17 minutes and 21 secondsAnd that's kind of an average.

17 minutes and 23 secondsJust so you know.

17 minutes and 24 secondsEvery time we commit to do work in a sprint,

17 minutes and 27 secondsif we only complete seventy percent of it,

17 minutes and 29 secondsthen we are going to have seventy percent of a video game.

17 minutes and 31 secondsLISETTE: And yes, this isn't a perfect process,

17 minutes and 33 secondsbut this is the means by which we have to get this done.

17 minutes and 37 secondsTIM: And I think we've learned a lot

17 minutes and 38 secondsabout planning the levels better as a team.

17 minutes and 41 secondsAnd so I'm excited about doing these next four levels,

17 minutes and 43 secondsand a lot smoother production methods.

17 minutes and 47 seconds-Right? -PAUL: Yep!

17 minutes and 48 secondsCut to the end of the milestone

17 minutes and 49 secondswhen I'm, like, totally frazzled.

17 minutes and 51 secondsLike: "Well, we learned a lot!"

17 minutes and 53 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

17 minutes and 54 secondsNo, but I have high hopes for this next set of milestones.

17 minutes and 56 secondsBecause I think we've worked through a lot of, uh...

17 minutes and 58 secondsuh...

17 minutes and 59 secondspoints of order.

18 minutes and 0 secondsAnd some of that ties into, like, the general:

18 minutes and 2 seconds"Are we clear about how, um...

18 minutes and 4 secondsGPs and level designers hand off their work yet?"

18 minutes and 7 secondsLike, it seemed like there was all this discussion on Hollis of, like:

18 minutes and 10 seconds"I didn't know you guys were working on this puzzle,

18 minutes and 12 secondsI could have wired that up in one day, and we would have met our milestone."

18 minutes and 14 secondsAnd all this--

18 minutes and 15 secondsInformation falls through the cracks around here a lot.

18 minutes and 18 secondsEven though we assume people are talking, and they are not.

18 minutes and 20 secondsI mean, we could get rid of Slack.

18 minutes and 22 secondsThat will force people to talk to each other.

18 minutes and 23 secondsANDY: Getting rid of Slack would fix that problem.

18 minutes and 25 seconds-\[LAUGHTER\] -Interesting.

18 minutes and 27 secondsWe've had process discussions in the past.

18 minutes and 28 seconds-LISETTE: Mm-hmm. -And they haven't...

18 minutes and 30 secondsWe are still sitting here,

18 minutes and 32 secondstalking about how we can get people to work together.

18 minutes and 34 secondsI mean, there is-- Okay, there is that.

18 minutes and 36 secondsAnd then there is another way of looking at it.

18 minutes and 37 secondsWhich is we could also...

18 minutes and 39 secondsbe really serious and empower these leads of all these teams.

18 minutes and 42 secondsTo be like: "You figure out your team's flow."

18 minutes and 45 secondsBecause each level is different.

18 minutes and 46 secondsEach level has different levels of questions,

18 minutes and 48 secondsand things that need emphasis.

18 minutes and 50 secondsSo, should all the leads be working with their teams to really--

18 minutes and 54 secondsnot strong-arm them,

18 minutes and 56 secondsnot dictate either, but just, like: "What is the hand-off on this team?"

19 minutes and 0 secondsTIM: So, um...

19 minutes and 2 secondsI think we got that now.

19 minutes and 3 secondsSo we are starting to plan the next group of levels.

19 minutes and 5 secondsNow we are doing four levels at a time.

19 minutes and 6 secondsAnd we have a level lead,

19 minutes and 8 secondswhich we didn't have in the old structure.

19 minutes and 10 secondsWhich was a lead for the project

19 minutes and 11 secondsthat wasn't necessarily from one discipline.

19 minutes and 13 secondsThere is one from each discipline.

19 minutes and 16 secondsWe have Jeremy French from art.

19 minutes and 18 secondsAnd we have, um...

19 minutes and 20 secondsGeoff, who was a lead before.

19 minutes and 22 secondsKee.

19 minutes and 24 secondsFrom programming.

19 minutes and 25 secondsAnd we have Seth from level design.

19 minutes and 28 secondsWho is going to be handling the stuff he's been handling so far,

19 minutes and 31 secondswhich is the-- the outside world,

19 minutes and 32 secondsand the Quarry and stuff.

19 minutes and 34 secondsAnd so, we have a lead from every discipline.

19 minutes and 35 secondsSo the whole project feels represented in one level team or another.

19 minutes and 40 secondsAnd those level leads are in charge of making sure things move forward,

19 minutes and 44 secondsand being like a little project leader for those level groups.

19 minutes and 47 secondsANDY: And people can start talking to people.

19 minutes and 48 secondsAnd people can start making shit.

19 minutes and 49 secondsLike, that's what we need to do.

19 minutes and 52 secondsI'm all for it.

19 minutes and 53 secondsI think this is a great plan, and I'm proud to be a part of it.

19 minutes and 56 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

19 minutes and 58 secondsI have the utmost confidence in the mission and its continued success.

20 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

20 minutes and 5 secondsNAOKO: Sorry.

20 minutes and 6 secondsI'm going to be a fly on the wall, just--

20 minutes and 8 secondsCool, sounds good.

20 minutes and 12 secondsTIM: The level lead on this project team is...

20 minutes and 15 seconds-Me. -Geoff, okay.

20 minutes and 17 secondsGEOFF: Well, I think we should start to talk about, like:

20 minutes and 19 seconds"What are the big outstanding issues for Compton?"

20 minutes and 22 secondsASIF: Mm-hmm.

20 minutes and 23 secondsGEOFF: From where I see it, uh...

20 minutes and 26 secondsAnd, you know, this is hearing from Tim a bit as well.

20 minutes and 30 secondsUm, it went far too toy box,

20 minutes and 32 secondsnot enough game show.

20 minutes and 34 secondsUm, and the level itself is probably a little large and spread out.

20 minutes and 39 secondsASIF: Mm-hmm.

20 minutes and 39 secondsGEOFF: And finding the ingredients are kind of confusing

20 minutes and 43 secondsUm, mostly because of the visual noise of the space.

20 minutes and 47 secondsGEOFF: I think Asif has a lot of great ideas,

20 minutes and 49 secondsbut, I think, what happened was that he was literally left alone.

20 minutes and 54 secondsInstead of having someone focus him on very particular things,

20 minutes and 57 secondshe just kept going wider and wider and wider.

21 minutes and 0 secondsUh, because there was no one there to say: "Hey... that's too much."

21 minutes and 3 seconds\[LAUGHS\]

21 minutes and 4 secondsUh, and-- and, you know...

21 minutes and 6 secondsWill is very accommodating,

21 minutes and 7 secondsand he just kept building more and more stuff.

21 minutes and 9 secondsAnd it was just--

21 minutes and 11 secondsHollis was the same way.

21 minutes and 12 secondsLike, the first version of Hollis, the first version of Helmut,

21 minutes and 14 secondsthe first version of Bob Z, they all just kind of go:

21 minutes and 16 seconds\[GEOFF VOCALIZES EXPANSION\]

21 minutes and 17 secondsSETH: Um, but this whole look

21 minutes and 18 secondsand the way it is interfacing the natural

21 minutes and 20 secondsand the Quarry rock and stuff, all looks great.

21 minutes and 22 secondsNICK: Something I like about

21 minutes and 24 secondsthe first one you are showing there is, like, the path is very clear to me.

21 minutes and 28 secondsPAUL: Did you get to play through the Quarry the way it was before?

21 minutes and 30 secondsYeah.

21 minutes and 31 secondsIt was a nightmare.

21 minutes and 32 seconds\[LAUGHS\]

21 minutes and 34 secondsWe had all the paths going along the walls,

21 minutes and 36 secondsand some came out a little bit and went back in.

21 minutes and 38 secondsAnd it was just...

21 minutes and 39 secondsThese overlapping crossing paths

21 minutes and 41 secondsthat once you got to an intersection, you weren't sure:

21 minutes and 44 seconds"Is this the end of a path? Or is that the beginning of a new path?"

21 minutes and 48 secondsOr, you know-- It was very confusing.

21 minutes and 50 secondsAnd with all that visual noise that just added onto the--

21 minutes and 53 secondsthe clusterfuck of madness.

21 minutes and 55 seconds\[LAUGHS\]

21 minutes and 56 secondsOkay, I can tell you start on that right rock,

21 minutes and 58 secondsand then you go to that left rock,

21 minutes and 59 secondsand then there is the kind of-- the back rock, you know?

22 minutes and 1 secondIt's... a good simplification, I think.

22 minutes and 4 secondsNICK: Definitely a different managerial style

22 minutes and 7 secondssince Zak is gone too, so.

22 minutes and 10 secondsUm...

22 minutes and 12 secondsYeah, a lot of things are--

22 minutes and 13 secondsI don't know if we are keeping anything really,

22 minutes and 16 secondslike, a hundred percent the same.

22 minutes and 18 secondsGIGI: Oh, okay.

22 minutes and 21 secondsThis is bad artwork. Don't use it.

22 minutes and 23 seconds-PAUL: No, it's good, it's good. -GIGI: No, it's so bad!

22 minutes and 26 secondsNo! I could do it so quickly.

22 minutes and 28 secondsJEREMY: And we got your,

22 minutes and 30 secondsuh... write-up

22 minutes and 32 seconds-Kind of wide view of things. -Oh! Yep, changed the whole direction.

22 minutes and 34 secondsAnd...

22 minutes and 35 secondswe are fucked.

22 minutes and 36 secondsUm, no!

22 minutes and 38 secondsSo, we got-- you know all about, uh...

22 minutes and 41 secondsthis kind of early... factoring.

22 minutes and 44 seconds\[MUSIC\]

22 minutes and 46 secondsAnd now we've got-- all of the architecture is made of hair.

22 minutes and 51 secondsThe environments could be made of hair.

22 minutes and 53 secondsEverything hair.

22 minutes and 54 secondsJP: So, I think our decision coming out of that was that

22 minutes and 56 secondsthis is just-- we are seeing Grulovia here.

22 minutes and 59 secondsThis is a Grulovian seaside town.

23 minutes and 1 secondAnd it's getting wrecked by, like,

23 minutes and 3 secondsthese apocalyptic tsunami flood-type kind of things.

23 minutes and 7 secondsWhich are also hair,

23 minutes and 8 secondsbut they are, like, made--

23 minutes and 9 secondsthey are sculpted into, like, the giant wave shapes and stuff.

23 minutes and 13 secondsI mean, it definitely has, like, a setting now.

23 minutes and 15 secondsI really like that it's, like, a place.

23 minutes and 17 secondsAnd not abstracted.

23 minutes and 18 secondsAnd it still has barber-y things.

23 minutes and 20 secondsJP: And then, once you get to the lighthouse itself,

23 minutes and 23 secondsgravity goes sideways.

23 minutes and 25 secondsWhat if there are big droplets of water?

23 minutes and 27 secondsOr Ford's face appear, like, crying.

23 minutes and 30 secondsCan we have Ford crying?

23 minutes and 32 secondsSure!

23 minutes and 33 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

23 minutes and 34 secondsBecause his girlfriend is a crazy lady now.

23 minutes and 37 seconds-Yeah, she killed a bunch of people. -Yeah.

23 minutes and 39 seconds-You know how it is? -Yeah.

23 minutes and 41 secondsI-- yeah, I've lived it.

23 minutes and 43 secondsUh...

23 minutes and 45 secondsIt led to some really cool creative things.

23 minutes and 47 secondsI think it's a really cool--

23 minutes and 49 secondsOh my god, the fucking construction!

23 minutes and 51 secondsUh...

23 minutes and 52 seconds\[CONSTRUCTION SITE NOISES\]

23 minutes and 54 secondsAll those innocent lives!

23 minutes and 56 secondsAll those...

23 minutes and 58 secondsAll those people!

24 minutes and 0 secondsAnd yet...

24 minutes and 2 secondsyou never thought about me.

24 minutes and 3 secondsAw-w-w!

24 minutes and 5 seconds\[CONSTRUCTION SITE NOISES\]

24 minutes and 8 seconds\[MUSIC\]

24 minutes and 11 secondsSo, it basically serves as one of the hubs in the game.

24 minutes and 14 secondsBut also serves as a place where you go back to it

24 minutes and 16 secondsto interact with characters.

24 minutes and 17 secondsIt's kind of like camp from the-- from the first game.

24 minutes and 20 secondsOne of the biggest things was the readability of space.

24 minutes and 22 secondsLike, because this is a hub level,

24 minutes and 24 secondsafter you exit one place, you are like: "I don't know where to go to next?"

24 minutes and 27 secondsBecause it was built up with action paths in mind,

24 minutes and 30 secondsthat meant it occluded the goals of where you are supposed to go to next.

24 minutes and 33 secondsAnd it also didn't feel like a real space anymore.

24 minutes and 36 secondsUm... so!

24 minutes and 37 secondsWe have four sprints to achieve this.

24 minutes and 39 secondsUm, all done by Christmas.

24 minutes and 41 secondsAnd Tim really wants to see people flying around in this space, so.

24 minutes and 45 secondsANDY: Yeah, it keeps coming up.

24 minutes and 46 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

24 minutes and 48 secondsGEOFF: Literally that Peter art.

24 minutes and 49 secondsBecause there is, like, a group of people talking,

24 minutes and 51 secondsthere is a guy flying through the air.

24 minutes and 53 secondsLike...

24 minutes and 54 secondsI think that should be the goal.

24 minutes and 56 secondsBecause if you can get the feeling of that Peter art in this space,

25 minutes and 0 secondsit's probably going to be enough for Tim.

25 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

25 minutes and 23 secondsCLAM: This is something that Emily boarded.

25 minutes and 25 secondsAnd then, now we are going to have to figure out how to...

25 minutes and 28 seconds...do it!

25 minutes and 29 secondsYeah, so here is the audience.

25 minutes and 31 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

25 minutes and 32 secondsThat's amazing.

25 minutes and 33 seconds\[MUSIC\]

25 minutes and 36 secondsTIM: So far so good. I think the kick-offs have all been...

25 minutes and 38 secondsuh, really good.

25 minutes and 39 secondsAnd I think to further communicate, uh...

25 minutes and 43 secondswhat's going on the team and on the project,

25 minutes and 45 secondsI have really been advocating recently for dailies.

25 minutes and 47 secondsLike, we brought dailies back.

25 minutes and 48 secondsBecause when I was talking to people,

25 minutes and 49 secondsthere was a lot, um...

25 minutes and 51 secondsconfusion and hard feelings about, uh...

25 minutes and 54 seconds"I was working on this area and this other person touched it.

25 minutes and 56 secondsAnd I didn't know they were doing that. And they didn't know what I was doing."

25 minutes and 58 secondsThere is a lot of: "I didn't know what was going on.

25 minutes and 59 secondsAnd people didn't know that I was doing this."

26 minutes and 1 secondAnd there was a lot of just people not knowing what was going on.

26 minutes and 3 secondsAnd so, dailies is--

26 minutes and 4 secondsis a thing that often people would drag their feet about and complain about.

26 minutes and 7 secondsBut really, if you go to that meeting

26 minutes and 8 secondsand you announce clearly and loudly what you are doing,

26 minutes and 10 secondsit really solves a lot of these little problems.

26 minutes and 12 secondsYou don't even realize all the problems it's solving,

26 minutes and 14 secondsbecause they are not happening,

26 minutes and 15 secondsbecause people are aware of what everybody is working on.

26 minutes and 18 secondsTIM: How can you tell which level is which one?

26 minutes and 20 seconds-TIM: I don't understand which is what. -NAOKO: I can make sense.

26 minutes and 24 secondsNAOKO: That is Compton on the left.

26 minutes and 25 seconds-TIM: Okay, and then... -NAOKO: The top, I think, is HQ?

26 minutes and 28 secondsOkay.

26 minutes and 30 secondsKEE: So, is this 'in-progress'? And this is 'done'?

26 minutes and 32 secondsNAOKO: So, we are going to make cards...

26 minutes and 35 secondsand put them up.

26 minutes and 37 secondsWow.

26 minutes and 38 secondsYeah!

26 minutes and 40 secondsNAOKO: And we are going to talk about, like,

26 minutes and 42 secondswhat they've been doing.

26 minutes and 43 secondsAnd if they finished, they are going to move it over.

26 minutes and 44 secondsSo, I got-- Do I have cards?

26 minutes and 47 seconds-You do, all the way up there. -Where am I? Okay, okay.

26 minutes and 49 secondsYeah, awesome!

26 minutes and 51 secondsSo, these are placed approximately where they are going to be?

26 minutes and 55 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

27 minutes and 0 secondsZACH: It's okay, we got you.

27 minutes and 2 secondsAll of these?

27 minutes and 3 secondsANDY: We learn things as we go.

27 minutes and 6 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

27 minutes and 7 seconds\[MUSIC\]

27 minutes and 9 secondsTIM: And then, listening the rest of the meeting,

27 minutes and 11 secondsdon't just tune out, and, um...

27 minutes and 12 secondsEven though I'm playing with my Rubik's cube, I'm totally listening.

27 minutes and 16 secondsMiyuki is new to the project. She came from RAD.

27 minutes and 19 secondsShe is wearing the shirt, she is already on board.

27 minutes and 21 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

27 minutes and 22 secondsNICK: I'm doing rocks around the new Quarry level.

27 minutes and 26 secondsSo...

27 minutes and 27 seconds-It's going to look more natural. -I saw some of those already. Exciting!

27 minutes and 29 secondsTIM: Who is next? Which group is next?

27 minutes and 31 seconds-ANDY: Uh, HQIN. -TIM: I'm going to call them!

27 minutes and 33 secondsHQIN. HQIN, dailies.

27 minutes and 38 secondsOkay, it's that time!

27 minutes and 41 secondsNAOKO: I think it's been...

27 minutes and 43 secondsokay...

27 minutes and 45 secondsright?

27 minutes and 46 secondsI mean, we are working.

27 minutes and 48 secondsPeople are talking to each other.

27 minutes and 50 secondsI think it's okay.

27 minutes and 51 secondsGEOFF: We just need to prove out that, like, a singular thing works.

27 minutes and 54 secondsASIF: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

27 minutes and 55 secondsGEOFF: And then, when we are going to the other recipes,

27 minutes and 57 secondsthat's when we are like:

27 minutes and 58 seconds"Let's come up with a bunch of different ones to figure out."

28 minutes and 0 secondsBecause we need to get to the point

28 minutes and 1 secondwhere we can start rapidly prototyping, right?

28 minutes and 3 seconds-ASIF: Yeah, yeah. -GEOFF: And we are not there yet.

28 minutes and 5 secondsJEREMY: It's a representation of Ford, um...

28 minutes and 8 secondsAnd if he doesn't feel like he comes from this world,

28 minutes and 11 secondsbut is just, like, here.

28 minutes and 12 secondsObserving it, or thinking about it, or whatever.

28 minutes and 15 secondsSETH: I've been trying to think about the path

28 minutes and 16 secondsto the Psychoisolation Chamber.

28 minutes and 18 secondsIt's too many jumps.

28 minutes and 20 secondsSo we are going to have to figure out how to make that...

28 minutes and 22 seconds-More interesting? -...not repetitive.

28 minutes and 24 secondsAs long as players know where to go.

28 minutes and 26 secondsThere is another theme in the game of, like,

28 minutes and 28 secondshow the old Psychonauts did-- ways.

28 minutes and 31 secondsAnd then they got funded and they got slicker.

28 minutes and 33 secondsBut Ford and Cassie just didn't fit into that.

28 minutes and 35 secondsSo, having--

28 minutes and 36 secondsWe should think about that with the barber shop,

28 minutes and 37 secondsbecause it would represent Ford's ways.

28 minutes and 39 secondsAnd we should, in some ways, contrast the rest.

28 minutes and 42 secondsSure.

28 minutes and 43 secondsUnless we modernize the whole things, and then Ford is like:

28 minutes and 45 seconds-"What's this modern place?" -Right.

28 minutes and 46 secondsKEE: Um... but, especially, like, I'm seeing the Compton team work together.

28 minutes and 50 secondsAnd it looks like they are really working together really well.

28 minutes and 53 secondsUm... So, I'm very hopeful there.

28 minutes and 55 secondsJOSH: Um, right now what I'm working on with Asif is, uh...

28 minutes and 59 secondsthe slicing station.

29 minutes and 1 second\[JOSH VOCALIZES FAST SLICING\]

29 minutes and 2 seconds\[ASIF SIGHS\]

29 minutes and 4 secondsJAMES: The design that you, like, envisioned for the station...

29 minutes and 6 secondsthat is not happening?

29 minutes and 9 secondsHonestly, it's gone through so many versions now that, like...

29 minutes and 14 secondsI don't even necessarily have, like, an anchor to come back to.

29 minutes and 16 secondsASIF: I got kind of burnt out on it, uh... mentally.

29 minutes and 19 secondsAnd, um...

29 minutes and 21 secondsIt's actually been a huge help to have other people's perspectives.

29 minutes and 24 secondsIt could be on the tummy of whoever is chopping?

29 minutes and 27 seconds-JOSH: Yeah, I like that! -It can pop out.

29 minutes and 29 secondsJOSH: You poke the belly. We add torpedo eyes.

29 minutes and 31 secondsLet me try this real quick.

29 minutes and 33 secondsJOSH: That was one thing that, like...

29 minutes and 36 secondsYou know, Ryan and Zak were pretty good at,

29 minutes and 38 secondswas just, like--

29 minutes and 39 secondsjust... saying: "It's done."

29 minutes and 41 secondsIt kind of sucks to have to design something

29 minutes and 43 secondsand also decide if it's good enough.

29 minutes and 45 secondsJOSH: If it's done.

29 minutes and 46 secondsStop filming me!

29 minutes and 48 seconds\[CHUCKLES\]

29 minutes and 49 secondsASIF: You guys feel good about this?

29 minutes and 50 secondsI'll go tell programming what the current plan is then.

29 minutes and 52 secondsJOSH: I think this is excellent.

29 minutes and 55 secondsThank you, guys.

29 minutes and 57 seconds\[TIM IMITATES HIGH-PITCHED SPEECH\]

30 minutes and 1 secondASIF: So, I'll grab this guy.

30 minutes and 2 secondsTIM: I love how the audience and ingredients work.

30 minutes and 4 secondsThat's really cool.

30 minutes and 5 secondsAre they all going to have name tags? Like Price Is Right?

30 minutes and 7 seconds-GEOFF: Yeah, that's... -TIM: "Pick me, pick me!"

30 minutes and 8 seconds\[ASIF CHUCKLES\]

30 minutes and 11 secondsASIF: All right.

30 minutes and 12 secondsSo, this will be a big chef with, uh...

30 minutes and 15 secondssome arms holding big chopping blades.

30 minutes and 18 secondsYou come up and punch this,

30 minutes and 19 secondsand it's fully prepared.

30 minutes and 20 secondsYou can, uh, take it over to the plating station.

30 minutes and 26 seconds-Whoa-ow. -Wow.

30 minutes and 27 secondsGEOFF: Like, you can bring an ingredient there.

30 minutes and 29 secondsAnd the ingredient transforms into the thing you need it to be.

30 minutes and 31 secondsAnd that completes the quest.

30 minutes and 32 secondsAnd the quest moves the whole thing forward.

30 minutes and 35 secondsAnd you can complete all the dishes.

30 minutes and 36 secondsThat stuff works, like...

30 minutes and 37 secondsThe level is not blocked to go through.

30 minutes and 39 secondsIt's more of the, like, functional...

30 minutes and 41 seconds"This is how the player understands that it actually works."

30 minutes and 45 seconds...um, stuff is not in yet.

30 minutes and 47 secondsAnd we need to do that to all of the stations.

30 minutes and 49 secondsASIF: Clarifying the connection between

30 minutes and 51 secondswhat you are supposed to be making and how that's communicated to you.

30 minutes and 54 secondsSo, like, uh...

30 minutes and 55 secondsImmediately seeing something in the level

30 minutes and 57 secondsthat tells you what you are supposed to make.

30 minutes and 59 secondsAnd then identifying which stations you are supposed to be going to.

31 minutes and 1 secondSo, that's a big thing we are trying to solve.

31 minutes and 4 secondsAnd hopefully we'll get lots of feedback on that in this afternoon's playtest.

31 minutes and 8 secondsSo, please pay attention to that.

31 minutes and 10 secondsASIF: And I think as soon as you watch someone

31 minutes and 13 secondsthat is new to the game play it,

31 minutes and 15 secondsyou start to realize how, like, even the simple things,

31 minutes and 19 secondsthe things that we imagine to be simple,

31 minutes and 21 secondsactually are kind of difficult, and really add up for the player.

31 minutes and 26 seconds-BEN: And I throw it back and... -AMY: ...nothing happens.

31 minutes and 30 secondsJEREMY: Oh, god!

31 minutes and 31 secondsAre these dangerous? I don't know.

31 minutes and 32 secondsASIF: They are supposed to be eventually.

31 minutes and 33 secondsJEREMY: Okay.

31 minutes and 34 seconds\[MUSIC\]

31 minutes and 36 secondsNAOKO: And, like, the playtest feedback is bad.

31 minutes and 38 secondsI get it, yeah, yeah.

31 minutes and 40 secondsSo, that's what-- that's what the unique thing about Compton is.

31 minutes and 43 secondsWhereas, like, Ford Hair is literally blocked from being made.

31 minutes and 47 secondsTAZIO: We are still getting, like, people not responding to the hair.

31 minutes and 50 secondsPAUL: Mm-hmm.

31 minutes and 52 secondsLEVI: Yeah.

31 minutes and 53 secondsTAZIO: And now it's-- now it's terrible.

31 minutes and 56 secondsLEVI: Your choco onion rings.

31 minutes and 58 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

31 minutes and 59 secondsTAZIO: The concept of this is really fun and cool.

32 minutes and 2 secondsAnd it seems like a really, really interesting idea.

32 minutes and 4 secondsBut it's a lot of-- it's been a lot of work to figure out, like...

32 minutes and 8 secondshow do we communicate that.

32 minutes and 9 secondsPAUL: What even is hair in the Psychonauts universe?

32 minutes and 13 secondsI don't know, man!

32 minutes and 15 secondsWe've done, like, a bunch of different tests for these things.

32 minutes and 19 secondsUm, and, like--

32 minutes and 21 secondsBut at the same time it's also...

32 minutes and 24 secondsThere is also this struggle where...

32 minutes and 26 secondsif you make something...

32 minutes and 29 secondsreally cool...

32 minutes and 30 secondsand the player can't interact with it,

32 minutes and 32 secondsyou haven't necessarily succeeded, right?

32 minutes and 34 secondsLike...

32 minutes and 35 secondsIt's, like, you know--

32 minutes and 36 secondsIf that's the cool thing that's going on visually in the level,

32 minutes and 39 secondsand it's not something for the player.

32 minutes and 41 secondsIt's just kind of, like: "What's the point?"

32 minutes and 43 secondsPAUL: Mm.

32 minutes and 46 secondsTAZIO: But yeah, we are definitely making a lot of progress.

32 minutes and 47 secondsI'm, like-- I think...

32 minutes and 49 secondswe are a little bit stressed out about how much there is to do

32 minutes and 52 secondsand how, like, quickly our deadline is approaching.

32 minutes and 56 secondsBut also just seeing, like, you know, where the HQ is,

33 minutes and 0 secondsand the Quarry especially.

33 minutes and 1 secondLike, those things had complete transformations

33 minutes and 4 secondsin a very short span of time.

33 minutes and 6 secondsSETH: ...of stuff that's sort of been changed around.

33 minutes and 8 secondsTIM: Pretty! Some good trees in there.

33 minutes and 10 secondsSETH: Oh, yeah! So, we-- So, over here is--

33 minutes and 13 secondsThe rocks are all right, too, Nick.

33 minutes and 15 seconds\[NICK LAUGHS\]

33 minutes and 16 secondsNICK: One of the the key things,

33 minutes and 17 secondsI think, that's working about this Quarry a lot better is that...

33 minutes and 22 secondsSeth explained it like a slice of pie.

33 minutes and 24 secondsSo, you start here.

33 minutes and 25 secondsAnd you can go this way to that thing.

33 minutes and 27 secondsYou can go this way to that thing, you know...

33 minutes and 28 seconds-SETH: Over here is Goat Island. -TIM: Goats!

33 minutes and 30 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

33 minutes and 31 secondsSETH: So, the goats-- The goats hang out on Goat Island.

33 minutes and 34 secondsNICK: Locations are kind of reading a lot better, so.

33 minutes and 37 secondsI think we can get away with adding a little bit more detail,

33 minutes and 40 secondsand getting a little crazier in certain areas.

33 minutes and 42 secondsThis high water decal thing.

33 minutes and 45 secondsSo, this is a decal that covers the whole Quarry.

33 minutes and 48 secondsAnd it kind of makes it look like the water used to be up there, right?

33 minutes and 51 seconds-Great! -SETH: Yep.

33 minutes and 52 secondsOkay!

33 minutes and 53 secondsCool! What time is it?

33 minutes and 54 seconds\[MUSIC\]

33 minutes and 55 secondsOh, man, I'm late! Okay!

33 minutes and 57 seconds-SETH: Thank you, Tim! -TIM: I'm going to sneak out. Bye!

34 minutes and 0 seconds\[TUCKER GRUNTS\]

34 minutes and 4 secondsANDY: Nice work, guys.

34 minutes and 5 secondsI will say, like, this Quarry thing went really well.

34 minutes and 7 secondsI'm really-- I'm really, like, glad that we were able

34 minutes and 9 secondsto basically get it done earlier than expected.

34 minutes and 12 secondsWhich is not something we can always say.

34 minutes and 14 secondsThat's pretty amazing.

34 minutes and 15 secondsAnd because we did that,

34 minutes and 17 secondsI'm expecting you to do even better with the Questionable Area next year.

34 minutes and 20 seconds-Oof! -Because we have to.

34 minutes and 21 secondsBecause we have to.

34 minutes and 23 secondsQuarry is fine.

34 minutes and 24 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

34 minutes and 26 seconds-Quarry is fine. -Quarry is fine.

34 minutes and 27 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

34 minutes and 28 secondsGEOFF: HQ interior is looking great too.

34 minutes and 30 secondsBoth of those places are looking awesome.

34 minutes and 32 secondsTUCKER: Oh, whoa-ow!

34 minutes and 33 secondsJEREMY: Ooo, that looks awesome!

34 minutes and 35 secondsYou have to wait a while before you'll see anybody levitate,

34 minutes and 38 secondsbecause it's totally random whether they'll decide

34 minutes and 40 secondsto pick one of the levitation paths.

34 minutes and 42 seconds-There is a guy in the back. -Left, left, left.

34 minutes and 44 secondsThere, in the back, on the wall.

34 minutes and 46 secondsThere he is!

34 minutes and 47 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

34 minutes and 49 secondsLEVI: Wow! It's everything I could have imagined!

34 minutes and 51 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

34 minutes and 52 secondsTUCKER: So, uh...

34 minutes and 53 seconds\[MUSIC\]

34 minutes and 55 seconds-TUCKER: Yeah, so, so... -\[LAUGHTER\]

34 minutes and 57 secondsIt is known why it works like that, right?

34 minutes and 59 secondsBEN: Yeah, I mean, he is just orienting to the spline.

35 minutes and 3 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

35 minutes and 5 secondsLEVI: Touchdown!

35 minutes and 6 seconds-LEVI: Oh, whoa-ow. -\[CHUCKLING\]

35 minutes and 9 secondsLEVI: Depth of field?!

35 minutes and 11 secondsSomeone found depth of field!

35 minutes and 12 seconds\[TUCKER LAUGHS\]

35 minutes and 16 secondsHallelujah!

35 minutes and 18 secondsJANICE: Um, and what I'm working on currently

35 minutes and 21 secondsis how to make these hallways leading into the different areas,

35 minutes and 25 secondsum, look more distinct.

35 minutes and 27 secondsSo that you know walking into a hallway:

35 minutes and 28 seconds"Oh, this is the hallway that leads to the offices."

35 minutes and 30 seconds"This is the hallway that leads to the classrooms."

35 minutes and 34 secondsLike, you know where you are depending on what hallway you are in.

35 minutes and 36 seconds\[MEGAPHONE NOISE\]

35 minutes and 38 secondsJanice.

35 minutes and 39 secondsJanice Bell.

35 minutes and 40 seconds\[BEN CHUCKLES\]

35 minutes and 42 secondsNAOKO: Oh, did we move Janice's tasks down?

35 minutes and 44 secondsKEE: No, they are up higher than last time.

35 minutes and 46 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

35 minutes and 49 secondsWait, what?

35 minutes and 50 secondsI'm going to go home. That's it.

35 minutes and 52 secondsI'm done. I'm done for the day.

35 minutes and 53 seconds\[MUSIC\]

36 minutes and 15 secondsJAMES: I'm still on standby for these two tasks.

36 minutes and 17 secondsCould you unhide the NPCs in the lobby?

36 minutes and 19 secondsYep, I can do that.

36 minutes and 20 seconds-Okay, can you do that today? -Yes.

36 minutes and 22 secondsAwesome, thank you.

36 minutes and 25 secondsANDY: Please-- Please write a task for doing that.

36 minutes and 28 seconds\[TUCKER CHUCKLES\]

36 minutes and 31 secondsI don't know why I threw you--

36 minutes and 32 secondsANDY: Well, I used to be gentle about it,

36 minutes and 34 secondsbut people ignore me when I'm gentle.

36 minutes and 36 secondsSo, please write a task for that.

36 minutes and 37 secondsANDY: We are coming down to the end here.

36 minutes and 39 secondsYou know, we basically got two weeks left.

36 minutes and 41 secondsAnd so, I wanted to just open this up to everybody to talk about, like:

36 minutes and 45 seconds"Where we are at? What's left?"

36 minutes and 48 secondsAnyone have anything, like, they are really concerned about?

36 minutes and 51 secondsUh, let's see.

36 minutes and 52 secondsFrom an art direction standpoint, I'm still very worried about hair Ford.

36 minutes and 57 secondsUm, it's getting there.

36 minutes and 59 secondsI think the next...

37 minutes and 1 secondsprint is going to be kind of where we leave it at the playable state.

37 minutes and 6 secondsBut I don't know if we are going to hit the look target.

37 minutes and 9 secondsKEE: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

37 minutes and 10 secondsLISETTE: So, I think it's going to be really challenging.

37 minutes and 12 secondsKEE: Yeah.

37 minutes and 13 secondsLISETTE: I think we need Tazio and Jeremy French in a room.

37 minutes and 17 secondsAnd just say, like:

37 minutes and 18 seconds"What-- what are we going to-- what's the final call?"

37 minutes and 21 secondsBecause you've done all these experiments this sprint.

37 minutes and 25 secondsSome of them are working out, some of them are not.

37 minutes and 27 secondsWe need to make a call of how we are going to finish this out.

37 minutes and 30 secondsLISETTE: My challenging, I think, right now with time is

37 minutes and 32 secondswe have one sprint left.

37 minutes and 36 secondsThe water is still just a set piece.

37 minutes and 41 secondsUm...

37 minutes and 42 secondsI'm more concerned about all of that whitebox

37 minutes and 43 secondsover there on the right.

37 minutes and 45 seconds-The playable area? -Yeah.

37 minutes and 47 secondsJEREMY: I mean, that's what I'd like to start tackling.

37 minutes and 49 secondsBut we need to figure out what-- how to build those cliffs.

37 minutes and 53 secondsLike, if we are not going with these tight curl cliff walls,

37 minutes and 58 secondsthen we need to...

38 minutes and 1 secondprove out the striated rock pattern cliffs,

38 minutes and 5 secondsbefore I-- before I go and populate any of the rest of this.

38 minutes and 9 secondsLISETTE: Mm-hmm.

38 minutes and 10 secondsYeah, my hope is that we--

38 minutes and 12 secondsWe are not going to be at a place where we actually hit Alpha on this.

38 minutes and 15 secondsBut at least we have a plan to know how we are going to execute on it.

38 minutes and 18 secondsAnd the big questions are answered.

38 minutes and 20 secondsAnd if we don't have them answered,

38 minutes and 22 secondsat least we have a plan B on how we are going to get them done.

38 minutes and 25 secondsJP: It seems like you all are most of the way through solving,

38 minutes and 27 secondslike, what...

38 minutes and 29 seconds...seems like was a really hard problem.

38 minutes and 31 secondsSo, like, good-- I mean, good job!

38 minutes and 35 secondsI know you are not all the way there yet, but, like, it's... yeah.

38 minutes and 38 secondsANDY: Success of this video game does not live or die on whether or not

38 minutes and 41 secondsthe hair in the hair level looks really, really cool.

38 minutes and 43 secondsLISETTE: Right.

38 minutes and 44 secondsThat's a whole Metacritic point.

38 minutes and 46 seconds\[ANDY CHUCKLES\]

38 minutes and 46 secondsI'll take it!

38 minutes and 48 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

38 minutes and 49 secondsIf it's literally one Metacritic point, like...

38 minutes and 53 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

38 minutes and 54 secondsCARYL: But at some point we have to...

38 minutes and 57 secondsYou know, we are going to start January.

38 minutes and 59 secondsAnd we are going to have ten months, and...

39 minutes and 1 secondto get it... shippable.

39 minutes and 4 secondsAnd that doesn't seem realistic to me.

39 minutes and 8 secondsSo, you know, start thinking about things that can get cut.

39 minutes and 14 secondsAnd cutting them. And just cut them.

39 minutes and 15 secondsStart cutting things.

39 minutes and 16 secondsAnd start telling Tim you have to cut things.

39 minutes and 18 secondsBecause there is no-- there is no--

39 minutes and 21 secondsLISETTE: There isn't a reluctance in this room to cut anything.

39 minutes and 23 secondsHuh?

39 minutes and 25 secondsThere isn't a reluctance in this room to cut anything.

39 minutes and 27 secondsWe are trying to get it so, like...

39 minutes and 31 secondsTim can playte--

39 minutes and 32 secondsTim can play the game from front to back as soon as possible.

39 minutes and 35 secondsYep.

39 minutes and 36 secondsYeah, but that isn't helping you ship either.

39 minutes and 38 secondsNAOKO: No, but it is working towards shipping the game.

39 minutes and 41 secondsI would say it's not helping us towards ship.

39 minutes and 43 secondsBut based on my experience here at Double Fine,

39 minutes and 45 secondsand working on a project with Tim Schafer,

39 minutes and 46 secondsthat's the best option I have.

39 minutes and 48 secondsYeah, just don't, um...

39 minutes and 50 secondsAnd I would be happy to discuss this with you.

39 minutes and 52 secondsYeah, I just, like--

39 minutes and 53 secondsI just want to be clear, I don't think we are going to be able

39 minutes and 55 secondsto skip-- slip the date anymore.

39 minutes and 57 secondsGEOFF: I have another meeting to go to, everyone.

39 minutes and 59 secondsI apologize.

40 minutes and 3 secondsMaybe these consultations don't have to happen all at the same time.

40 minutes and 7 secondsGEOFF: Yeah, it's going fine.

40 minutes and 10 secondsI mean, we are coming to the end of a milestone and...

40 minutes and 13 secondsUm...

40 minutes and 15 secondsWe are going to hit Alpha in four levels.

40 minutes and 17 secondsWhich, I think, we are actually going to do.

40 minutes and 19 secondsHair Ford might be a little bit behind.

40 minutes and 22 secondsBut I think it's going to hit their, like, visual Alpha at least.

40 minutes and 24 secondsAll the whitebox will be gone,

40 minutes and 25 secondsso that will be good.

40 minutes and 26 secondsOoo!

40 minutes and 27 secondsGEOFF: Um, and...

40 minutes and 29 secondsyou know, Compton is coming in a little hot.

40 minutes and 31 seconds\[LAUGHS\]

40 minutes and 32 secondsThe spikes just don't do it for me here.

40 minutes and 34 secondsI don't know.

40 minutes and 35 secondsThat's just me.

40 minutes and 39 secondsEMILY: I like that the button is there.

40 minutes and 41 secondsGEOFF: Yes! Yeah, the button being there is awesome.

40 minutes and 43 seconds-GEOFF: That's great. -EMILY: A+

40 minutes and 45 secondsUm...

40 minutes and 46 secondsSo, we are still pretty far away from this being a...

40 minutes and 50 secondsany sort of polished--

40 minutes and 52 secondsOh my god, shut up, Compton. Jesus.

40 minutes and 54 secondsWe need a proper tutorial set up for the first part.

40 minutes and 58 secondsWe can change the timer, so that feels good.

41 minutes and 0 secondsThose are things we can tune right now.

41 minutes and 2 secondsJOSH: What do you guys think about

41 minutes and 4 secondspotential universal language for where you can put an ingredient?

41 minutes and 7 secondsSo, right now, like...

41 minutes and 9 secondsYes.

41 minutes and 10 secondsGEOFF: It takes a lot of scrutiny.

41 minutes and 11 secondsAnd a lot of, like, doing these very... miniscule tasks

41 minutes and 16 secondsthat, like, once they are all done, it really helps.

41 minutes and 19 secondsGEOFF: Josh.

41 minutes and 20 secondsAnd, like, look straight down.

41 minutes and 21 secondsFrom here over to here.

41 minutes and 23 secondsSo their sight line is straight this way.

41 minutes and 26 secondsAll right!

41 minutes and 28 seconds-GEOFF: Everybody good? -EMILY: Yes.

41 minutes and 29 secondsIt's definitely coming along. We are making progress.

41 minutes and 31 secondsIt's just we got a ways to go still, so.

41 minutes and 34 seconds-Let's do it! -Yep.

41 minutes and 35 seconds\[MUSIC\]

41 minutes and 53 secondsASIF: I mean, how do we control where that happens then?

41 minutes and 56 secondsBecause there are multiple brainstorm hazards

41 minutes and 58 secondsthroughout the level, right?

41 minutes and 59 secondsGEOFF: I mean, we can always just move, like-- teleport them to the center.

42 minutes and 3 seconds\[MUSIC\]

42 minutes and 12 secondsGEOFF: You know, as we are seeing in Compton,

42 minutes and 13 secondslike, writing is coming in hot as we are working on it, and...

42 minutes and 17 secondsit does provide an insane amount of context.

42 minutes and 20 secondsGEOFF: Did you guys read what Tim wrote?

42 minutes and 22 seconds-JOSH: I have not read it yet, -JAMES: I have not either.

42 minutes and 25 seconds-ASIF: Yeah. -Right now!

42 minutes and 27 secondsUh, do you guys think it's possible to get the scratch for Dish 2 in by Friday?

42 minutes and 33 seconds-JOSH: This Friday? -GEOFF: Yeah.

42 minutes and 35 secondsTIM (HIGH-PITCHED): We can-- we can do it!

42 minutes and 37 secondsNo.

42 minutes and 39 secondsWhy?

42 minutes and 40 secondsBecause we have all these other things to do as well.

42 minutes and 41 secondsI mean, there is a million things to do.

42 minutes and 43 secondsEverybody is going to be doing a ton of stuff.

42 minutes and 44 secondsJAMES: If you want us to do that

42 minutes and 45 secondsin lieu of doing these things this week, then yes.

42 minutes and 48 secondsGEOFF: That seems, like... wrong.

42 minutes and 52 secondsIf we are implementing dialogue--

42 minutes and 53 secondsall of the dialogue, like, Wednesday of next week,

42 minutes and 55 secondsit's not going to happen.

42 minutes and 57 secondsAnd we need to get it in, so.

42 minutes and 59 secondsBut I also don't want you guys to commit to things

43 minutes and 0 secondsthat you guys don't have time for.

43 minutes and 2 secondsAnd it does sound like there is a lot of work to do as well.

43 minutes and 4 secondsYeah, a lot of the newer stuff that I saw in the script

43 minutes and 7 secondson the first pass seems more station specific.

43 minutes and 9 secondsYeah, it's possible that we can get it all done in two days.

43 minutes and 11 secondsI just don't want to...

43 minutes and 13 secondspromise you that that and all this stuff can be done by Friday.

43 minutes and 16 secondsBut we need to set goals for ourselves, so we can try to do these things.

43 minutes and 20 secondsAnd even if we can't do them, I don't want to say: "No."

43 minutes and 22 secondsBecause that means we are just-- they are not going to get done at all.

43 minutes and 26 secondsJames will sit down with Naoko and look at his time,

43 minutes and 29 secondsand we'll report back.

43 minutes and 31 secondsGEOFF: I mean, I'm not going to lie to you.

43 minutes and 33 secondsThis is literally going to be the next year of this project.

43 minutes and 35 secondsOkay.

43 minutes and 36 secondsJOSH: Wait, what's going to be the next year of the project?

43 minutes and 37 secondsGEOFF: Like, the amount of what we need to hit.

43 minutes and 41 secondsWe need to get this level to Alpha.

43 minutes and 42 secondsFor this stuff to feel good, we've gotta do a lot of work.

43 minutes and 46 secondsI'm not saying we shouldn't do a lot of work.

43 minutes and 48 secondsGEOFF: Well, well, well--

43 minutes and 49 secondsYou are saying that, but you are also saying:

43 minutes and 51 seconds"We are out of scope."

43 minutes and 52 secondsAnd it's like: "Yes, we are."

43 minutes and 54 secondsEMILY: We've achieved out of scope.

43 minutes and 56 secondsGEOFF: We've achieved out of scope a while ago.

43 minutes and 58 secondsAnd the fact that it took us so long to get the--

44 minutes and 2 secondsthe stuff playable the way we wanted it to,

44 minutes and 4 secondshas pushed us back even farther.

44 minutes and 6 secondsSo, if we want this--

44 minutes and 8 secondsIf we want to do these things,

44 minutes and 11 secondsand, I think, in a lot of cases we are going to have to,

44 minutes and 13 secondsso the level feels good,

44 minutes and 15 secondswe've gotta--

44 minutes and 16 secondswe just gotta do it.

44 minutes and 18 secondsGEOFF: We don't want to have a crunch culture.

44 minutes and 20 secondsBut I also don't think that...

44 minutes and 21 seconds...crunch culture means never putting in extra time or effort.

44 minutes and 27 secondsMaking video games is an artistic endeavor.

44 minutes and 29 secondsAnd I, personally, am not going to let...

44 minutes and 35 secondssomething I'm not proud of...

44 minutes and 36 seconds\[GEOFF CHUCKLES\]

44 minutes and 37 seconds...out the door.

44 minutes and 38 seconds\[INDISTINCT CHATTER\]

44 minutes and 40 secondsJOSH: It's a logistical nightmare.

44 minutes and 42 secondsOh, man, the gas preview is amazing.

44 minutes and 44 secondsI love the gas preview.

44 minutes and 46 secondsJOSH: So we should be...

44 minutes and 47 seconds-\[INDISTINCT CHATTER\] -\[LAUGHTER\]

44 minutes and 50 secondsJOSH: ...but also a million other things.

44 minutes and 51 secondsJust how much dialogue there is.

44 minutes and 53 secondsTAZIO: Oh my god, I'm going to die!

44 minutes and 54 seconds\[INDISTINCT CHATTER\]

44 minutes and 57 secondsWait, wait! One conversation at a time!

44 minutes and 59 seconds-One conversation at a time! -Hey, everybody, please!

45 minutes and 1 secondYou know, like, Psychonauts is everyone in this building.

45 minutes and 4 secondsAnd every one of them is contributing to it being a good or a bad game.

45 minutes and 9 secondsAnd I would really like to make a good game.

45 minutes and 13 secondsJAMES: This level is fun.

45 minutes and 15 secondsWhat?

45 minutes and 16 secondsThis level is fun.

45 minutes and 17 secondsGEOFF: And I think we are definitely going in that direction.

45 minutes and 19 secondsI just think sometimes....

45 minutes and 21 secondsto put that extra bit of effort into it is...

45 minutes and 24 secondsnecessary, you know?

45 minutes and 26 secondsLISETTE: We should let Adam know.

45 minutes and 28 seconds\[TIM VOCALIZES GAME SHOW SOUNDS\]

45 minutes and 30 secondsPick me!

45 minutes and 32 secondsJust call me Pork Chopper!

45 minutes and 34 secondsTIM: What?

45 minutes and 35 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

45 minutes and 36 secondsThat's great.

45 minutes and 37 secondsEe-hee.

45 minutes and 38 secondsRAM! IT! DOWN!

45 minutes and 44 seconds\[TIM LAUGHS\]

45 minutes and 46 secondsThat's a nice reveal.

45 minutes and 47 secondsEverybody just needs to see this.

45 minutes and 48 seconds-It's my favorite part. -Oh my god!

45 minutes and 50 seconds-Bread butt! -\[LAUGHTER\]

45 minutes and 51 secondsThat's the Homepride Butter Top difference.

45 minutes and 53 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

45 minutes and 56 secondsAh!

45 minutes and 57 secondsOh, it's dead!

45 minutes and 58 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

46 minutes and 0 secondsDon't worry about me! Save the dish!

46 minutes and 2 seconds\[CHUCKLING\]

46 minutes and 3 secondsI think that's...

46 minutes and 5 secondsI think that's it for now,

46 minutes and 6 secondsbecause the last judge is not in here.

46 minutes and 9 secondsNice! Looking cool.

46 minutes and 11 secondsIt's getting there, everybody!

46 minutes and 12 seconds-Yeah! -Looking cool!

46 minutes and 13 seconds\[TIM HUMS THE GAME SHOW MELODY\]

46 minutes and 14 secondsGEOFF: Thanks, guys! We are closing this meeting down.

46 minutes and 17 secondsJoin the next meeting.

46 minutes and 18 secondsI got a little Christmas Santa chair to sit here.

46 minutes and 23 secondsAMY: So...

46 minutes and 24 secondsFriday was the team meeting

46 minutes and 26 secondswhere we were going to discuss...

46 minutes and 29 secondssome issues I had brought up on Slack...

46 minutes and 33 secondsabout...

46 minutes and 35 secondscrunch culture.

46 minutes and 36 secondsI was just letting them know that from a peon standpoint

46 minutes and 39 secondsthis is what we were looking at.

46 minutes and 40 secondsLike, letting them know this is what...

46 minutes and 43 secondsif you were down here where I am, looking up,

46 minutes and 46 secondsthis is what it looks like.

46 minutes and 47 secondsAnd...

46 minutes and 48 secondsI made...

46 minutes and 50 secondsI made a lengthy Slack post

46 minutes and 53 secondsabout some things that I saw...

46 minutes and 57 secondsthat different people were doing

47 minutes and 0 secondsthat taken together had me a little worried.

47 minutes and 2 seconds\[MUSIC\]

47 minutes and 5 secondsAnd...

47 minutes and 7 secondsit started a big discussion.

47 minutes and 8 seconds\[MUSIC\]

47 minutes and 12 secondsAnd...

47 minutes and 14 secondsTim wanted to have...

47 minutes and 16 secondsthat discussion...

47 minutes and 19 secondswith the team in a team meeting.

47 minutes and 24 secondsTIM: So, I wanted to talk about-- There was, um...

47 minutes and 26 secondsa discussion on Super Double Fine about, um, crunch mode.

47 minutes and 30 secondsAnd I want to make sure that we are absolutely clear

47 minutes and 32 secondsabout how we all feel about that.

47 minutes and 33 secondsAnd so I wanted to have that discussion here instead of on Slack.

47 minutes and 36 secondsBecause I think it would be a little more productive.

47 minutes and 38 secondsAnd, um...

47 minutes and 39 secondsAnd first I just want to open it up to people here.

47 minutes and 41 secondsMOIRA: But my experience in the past

47 minutes and 43 secondsis that crunch for me was something that was mandatory.

47 minutes and 45 secondsThat we didn't have a choice.

47 minutes and 47 secondsThat they brought in food,

47 minutes and 49 secondsbecause they expected that we would be there.

47 minutes and 52 secondsAnd that if we weren't there,

47 minutes and 53 secondswe got a lot of pushback from our managers and from coworkers.

47 minutes and 58 secondsAnd I don't, for me personally, get that feeling here.

48 minutes and 1 secondThat the reason they bring in dinners

48 minutes and 2 secondsis because they know sometimes people work an hour or two late.

48 minutes and 6 secondsBut not that they are expecting people to work late.

48 minutes and 9 secondsOr that you guys even want people to work late.

48 minutes and 11 secondsTIM: The things that definitely are true in there,

48 minutes and 13 secondsthat I want to make sure everyone is clear about that,

48 minutes and 14 secondsthat we want to--

48 minutes and 15 secondswe care a lot about crunch mode, and, um...

48 minutes and 19 secondsuh, and not having it.

48 minutes and 21 secondsTo me crunch mode is, um...

48 minutes and 23 secondswhen a company knowingly hands far too much work for a team to do,

48 minutes and 27 secondsand demands it to be done at a certain time,

48 minutes and 29 secondsknowing that it will take away the team's personal life,

48 minutes and 32 secondsand being okay with that, and exploiting that.

48 minutes and 34 secondsLISETTE: But has anyone here felt like that's the case?

48 minutes and 37 secondsYeah, I think Geoff does it too much.

48 minutes and 39 secondsI think Geoff takes on too much work. Sorry to call you out.

48 minutes and 41 secondsTIM: I don't think Geoff comes here at night because there is food, though.

48 minutes and 44 seconds-AMY: No, I know. -\[LAUGHTER\]

48 minutes and 46 secondsGEOFF: Believe me, my waistline says no.

48 minutes and 48 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

48 minutes and 48 secondsAMY: The second statement about the more than five consecutive days--

48 minutes and 52 secondsMaybe we do have a hard-set deadline.

48 minutes and 54 secondsI don't think anybody on the project knows what that is.

48 minutes and 57 secondsAt least a lot of people don't.

48 minutes and 59 seconds-CARYL: November 2nd. -LISETTE: It's been said.

49 minutes and 1 secondI've heard other dates.

49 minutes and 2 seconds-That are farther. -CARYL: Okay, November 2nd.

49 minutes and 3 secondsThat are farther than that.

49 minutes and 4 secondsCARYL: So, I'm-- I'm telling you,

49 minutes and 6 secondsand I said it in Slack,

49 minutes and 8 secondsyou guys all need to be pencils down on your game on November 2nd.

49 minutes and 12 secondsIt is also about a year away,

49 minutes and 14 secondsand it can't slip, because--

49 minutes and 16 secondsCARYL: It's not going to slip.

49 minutes and 18 secondsAMY: People were feeling...

49 minutes and 20 seconds...a squeeze.

49 minutes and 21 secondsAnd... sometimes, I think,

49 minutes and 24 secondsyou are going to feel a squeeze in development.

49 minutes and 26 secondsWe were having our most successful milestone...

49 minutes and 30 secondsover a year out from ship.

49 minutes and 32 secondsIt was kind of worrisome to start feeling a squeeze.

49 minutes and 34 secondsAMY: It is one of those things where, from my perspective,

49 minutes and 36 secondsit feels like a slippery slope.

49 minutes and 38 secondsUh, that's all.

49 minutes and 40 secondsThat's where it came from.

49 minutes and 41 secondsCARYL: So, to be clear. This project has already slipped twice.

49 minutes and 44 secondsAMY: Yeah.

49 minutes and 45 secondsSo...

49 minutes and 46 secondsAnd given where we are as a company and what we need to do,

49 minutes and 49 secondsit actually can't slip again.

49 minutes and 51 secondsLike, I'm here to tell you, like,

49 minutes and 52 secondsI know what the next five years looks like.

49 minutes and 54 secondsAnd this project will need to be scoped back, changed, altered,

49 minutes and 58 secondsbut that's the date we have to hit.

50 minutes and 0 secondsBecause, like, that's the agreement we made with Microsoft.

50 minutes and 3 secondsTIM: I want to say something to Amy,

50 minutes and 4 secondsbecause I know it's not-- it's not crazy to look--

50 minutes and 5 secondsThe first time I saw working meals be announced on a project, I'm like:

50 minutes and 8 seconds\[TIM VOCALIZES SURPRISE\]

50 minutes and 9 secondsIt does seem a little weird, because...

50 minutes and 11 secondswe fought really hard against crunch mode, right?

50 minutes and 14 secondsI've always been against--

50 minutes and 15 seconds"Oh, it's so great to work at this tech company.

50 minutes and 16 secondsThey do my laundry, and dah-dah-dah-dah."

50 minutes and 18 secondsI'm like: "That's, like, a trap to get you to stay at work all the time."

50 minutes and 20 secondsWe don't really like that kind of stuff.

50 minutes and 21 secondsBut if after...

50 minutes and 24 secondsYou know, I've come to-- I've come to accept it, because...

50 minutes and 26 secondsif after all those steps of being participatory in your scheduling,

50 minutes and 29 secondsof estimating your own tasks, and being involved in the scoping,

50 minutes and 33 secondssomeone is like: "You know, uh, the deadline is--

50 minutes and 35 secondsthe milestone is this Friday, and if I stayed a little extra,

50 minutes and 37 secondsI could actually land this thing a lot better than I could have."

50 minutes and 40 secondsAnd if Tucker wants to buy Geoff an Umami Burger,

50 minutes and 43 secondsthen that's fine.

50 minutes and 44 secondsI accept that. I think it's great.

50 minutes and 45 seconds\[LAUGHTER\]

50 minutes and 46 secondsI don't want it-- You know, it's not, like,

50 minutes and 48 secondsyou know, Tucker is going around

50 minutes and 50 secondsand asking: "Are you staying late? Oh! No?"

50 minutes and 53 secondsYou know, and, like, that's--

50 minutes and 54 secondsAnd the thing I just--

50 minutes and 55 secondsI kind of never want to hear again is slippery slope.

50 minutes and 57 secondsBecause I just want--

50 minutes and 59 secondsI guess-- I guess I want a little more trust than that.

51 minutes and 0 secondsBecause the reason we know about the slippery slope is that we--

51 minutes and 3 secondswe, like, as a company climbed from the bottom of that slope.

51 minutes and 6 secondsWe didn't start at the top and mess up.

51 minutes and 8 secondsYou know, like, we--

51 minutes and 9 secondsMy career started at the bottom

51 minutes and 10 secondswith being the victim of crunch mode on Monkey 1 and 2.

51 minutes and 13 secondsAnd then, internalizing that and being a perpetrator of crunch mode

51 minutes and 17 secondson all my games after that until Psychonauts,

51 minutes and 19 secondsand throughout Psychonauts.

51 minutes and 21 secondsI was, like, a villain of crunch mode.

51 minutes and 23 secondsI was like: "What are you--"

51 minutes and 25 secondsYou know, I really-- Because I was mostly just so focused:

51 minutes and 26 seconds"This game has to be good.

51 minutes and 27 secondsYou are either working with me to make this game good.

51 minutes and 29 secondsOr you are my arch enemy."

51 minutes and 30 secondsAnd I was very intense about that kind of stuff.

51 minutes and 32 secondsAnd-- and it was through--

51 minutes and 33 secondsby having the worst crunch mode of all time on-- on-- on, um...

51 minutes and 38 secondsuh, on Psychonauts.

51 minutes and 39 secondsAnd then, all of us just, like--

51 minutes and 41 secondsYou know, made more intense by trying to save the company,

51 minutes and 43 secondsYou know, we all stopped and were like: "Holy fuck!"

51 minutes and 46 secondsAnd we, like, um...

51 minutes and 48 secondscrawled up, like, the Windsor Waterworks of Crisco water slides

51 minutes and 51 secondsto get up to the top of that slippery slope,

51 minutes and 52 secondsand then just don't be the people who walk by and be like:

51 minutes and 54 seconds"Careful about the slippery slope."

51 minutes and 56 secondsBecause we definitely are very familiar with it.

51 minutes and 58 secondsAnd we don't let that kind of stuff happen here.

52 minutes and 0 secondsAMY: Uh, what I was hearing was:

52 minutes and 3 seconds"This isn't an issue.

52 minutes and 4 secondsI was like: "Okay, well, I disagree."

52 minutes and 6 secondsAnd that was-- that was the whole thing.

52 minutes and 9 secondsBut it turned into a bad...

52 minutes and 10 seconds\[CHUCKLES\]

52 minutes and 11 secondsA really bad back-and-forth.

52 minutes and 14 secondsAnd I just broke down. Like, I cried.

52 minutes and 15 seconds...many different things.

52 minutes and 18 secondsBut all I've gotten in this conversation is that I did it wrong,

52 minutes and 22 secondsand that I shouldn't say it,

52 minutes and 23 secondsand that we are trying, and that I should just have faith.

52 minutes and 25 secondsAnd I've heard that so many times in this room about so many things!

52 minutes and 29 secondsKRISTEN: I think everyone knows your intentions.

52 minutes and 31 secondsYou have good intentions.

52 minutes and 32 secondsAnd I know you are looking out for the team.

52 minutes and 33 secondsEveryone knows that.

52 minutes and 35 secondsI don't-- That's not what I'm hearing.

52 minutes and 36 secondsTIM: I don't think anyone said: "Just have faith."

52 minutes and 38 secondsAnd I don't think anyone said: "Don't bring this stuff up."

52 minutes and 40 seconds-That's bullshit. -AMY: Well, you are the one...

52 minutes and 41 seconds...who literally said that you don't want to hear about the slippery slope--

52 minutes and 43 secondsTIM: I don't want-- Saying slippery slope to us is just...

52 minutes and 46 secondsdoesn't respect our history as a company.

52 minutes and 47 secondsLike we are going to accidentally have crunch mode: "Whoops!"

52 minutes and 49 secondsSaying that it's a ship year doesn't have respect for me

52 minutes and 52 secondsas someone who has been in this industry for ten years!

52 minutes and 55 secondsKEE: For all of us, we went through this a lot ourselves.

52 minutes and 58 secondsLike, my blood pressure is off the roof,

53 minutes and 0 secondsbecause of the crunch I did on Psychonauts.

53 minutes and 2 secondsAnd I understand it's impact on our health, our lives,

53 minutes and 5 secondsand what it has on the end product.

53 minutes and 7 secondsSo, please...

53 minutes and 9 secondsPlease, please, have faith and understand

53 minutes and 10 secondsthat this is something that we take extremely seriously.

53 minutes and 13 secondsAnd I am so glad we are able to have this conversation,

53 minutes and 15 secondsbecause the first thing I said to my husband was:

53 minutes and 18 seconds"Can you imagine this at EA?"

53 minutes and 21 secondsLike, somebody speaking up would have been, like, fired.

53 minutes and 23 secondsImmediately. "You are fucking gone."

53 minutes and 25 seconds"Sorry, you don't talk like that."

53 minutes and 26 secondsAnd the fact that we-- we can do this here...

53 minutes and 29 secondsis amazing!

53 minutes and 30 secondsTIM: That's all. That's all I want to say.

53 minutes and 32 secondsSo, thanks for... sitting here talking.

53 minutes and 34 secondsUm...

53 minutes and 36 secondsAnd that's all I have to say.

53 minutes and 38 secondsAll right. Sorry I ate into your lunch time.

53 minutes and 47 seconds-LISETTE: Making games is hard. -TIM: It is hard.

53 minutes and 49 seconds\[GEOFF GRUNTS\]

53 minutes and 53 secondsRAY: Let's make some games!

53 minutes and 54 seconds-What's that? -Let's make some games!

53 minutes and 56 secondsKEE: Seriously, how do you guys feel

53 minutes and 58 secondswhen you watch some of this stuff that's been happening?

54 minutes and 0 secondsLike, were you--

54 minutes and 1 secondDid you record the, um... the crunch meeting?

54 minutes and 3 seconds-PAUL: Oh, yeah. -PAUL: Yeah.

54 minutes and 4 seconds(F-f-fuck!)

54 minutes and 5 secondsPAUL: That was unexpected.

54 minutes and 7 secondsKEE: And it was the day of the Christmas party.

54 minutes and 8 secondsSo it was like: "Fuck!"

54 minutes and 10 seconds\[LAUGHS SILENTLY\]

54 minutes and 12 secondsUgh!

54 minutes and 13 seconds\[GEOFF SIGHS\]

54 minutes and 16 secondsI felt like I couldn't really say the thing I wanted to say in that meeting.

54 minutes and 18 seconds\[MUSIC\]

54 minutes and 20 secondsI don't know.

54 minutes and 21 seconds\[GEOFF SIGHS\]

54 minutes and 23 secondsGEOFF: The reality of it, it's going to come down to

54 minutes and 25 secondsthere will be people who don't want to crunch,

54 minutes and 27 secondsand there will be people who will crunch.

54 minutes and 29 secondsAnd...

54 minutes and 30 secondsthe burden will be more on the people who will crunch.

54 minutes and 33 secondsBecause if I didn't crunch on Loboto...

54 minutes and 37 secondsit would have looked like shit.

54 minutes and 44 secondsYes.

54 minutes and 50 secondsGEOFF: And I think that's the reality of the situation.

54 minutes and 53 secondsWe can't have our cake and eat it too.

54 minutes and 57 secondsKEE: And this-- and this does very much--

54 minutes and 59 secondsFinish-- finish your thought.

55 minutes and 3 secondsGEOFF: Oh, yeah.

55 minutes and 6 seconds-And yes, we need to-- -\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

55 minutes and 9 secondsPeople are just going to have to make a decision for themselves.

55 minutes and 12 secondsLike, whether they are okay with something going out the door poorly

55 minutes and 15 secondsor if they want it to go out well.

55 minutes and 17 secondsAnd if they want it to go out poorly,

55 minutes and 18 secondsthey have to, like-- like, let that thing go,

55 minutes and 22 secondsso someone who does want it to go out the door well...

55 minutes and 24 secondscan take it over.

55 minutes and 25 secondsAnd I think that's probably going to be the biggest growing pain possible.

55 minutes and 28 secondsIt's like: "If you don't want to crunch, that's totally fine.

55 minutes and 31 secondsBut you can't have control over things...

55 minutes and 34 secondsthat aren't going to get done."

55 minutes and 35 secondsRight? And that's going to be a weird situation for people to be in.

55 minutes and 40 secondsI don't know how am I going to handle that.

55 minutes and 42 seconds\[GEOFF LAUGHS\]

55 minutes and 44 seconds\[MUSIC\]

55 minutes and 46 secondsSo, later on--

55 minutes and 47 secondsLike, I happened to have a programmer meeting...

55 minutes and 50 secondsright after, that day.

55 minutes and 51 secondsRight after that meeting, because it was scheduled.

55 minutes and 53 secondsHa-ha! I know, it was great, um...

55 minutes and 56 secondsIt was a really, really rough one.

55 minutes and 59 secondsAnd, um...

56 minutes and 1 secondIn that meeting I just told people, like:

56 minutes and 3 seconds"Listen...

56 minutes and 4 secondsif you don't think things are going to get better,

56 minutes and 7 secondsand, uh...

56 minutes and 8 secondsat the end of the day this is a job,

56 minutes and 10 secondsyou need to quit, or do something else,

56 minutes and 12 secondsgo do something else.

56 minutes and 13 secondsYou shouldn't make your lives that much worse...

56 minutes and 15 secondsfor a job."

56 minutes and 17 seconds\[MUSIC\]

56 minutes and 27 seconds\[PAUL SIGHS\]

56 minutes and 29 secondsWhat's-- what's up? What's going on?

56 minutes and 31 secondsUh, today is my last day... at Double Fine.

56 minutes and 34 seconds-PAUL: Yeah. -Yeah.

56 minutes and 35 secondsIt's pretty weird.

56 minutes and 36 secondsBecause this was a dream of mine,

56 minutes and 39 secondsand this is, like-- this is what I had--

56 minutes and 41 secondsThis is pinnacle, culture-wise and creativity-wise.

56 minutes and 44 secondsAnd, um...

56 minutes and 46 secondsrealizing that this isn't where I wanted to be, I kind of--

56 minutes and 49 secondsIt was really heartbreaking.

56 minutes and 51 secondsAnd then...

56 minutes and 52 secondstaking that sort of, like, leap to: "I want to go somewhere else."

56 minutes and 55 secondsThat's when--

56 minutes and 56 secondsThat's when things got: \[EXHALES\]

56 minutes and 58 seconds"Okay, this has happened. This is going to happen."

57 minutes and 0 secondsUm, so...

57 minutes and 2 secondsI just want to toast-- Thank you, everyone, for coming here.

57 minutes and 4 secondsAnd thank you for working at Double Fine.

57 minutes and 7 secondsUh, it's been a crazy year.

57 minutes and 8 secondsWe've all been through a lot.

57 minutes and 10 secondsA lot of us went through a lot just this morning.

57 minutes and 12 secondsBut it had nothing to do with that meeting.

57 minutes and 14 secondsPAUL: Well, how did Tim take your desire to leave?

57 minutes and 18 secondsThe really sad part for me is, I--

57 minutes and 20 secondsHe was, like...

57 minutes and 21 secondsan industry hero to me.

57 minutes and 23 secondsI can't imagine he is happy.

57 minutes and 26 secondsBut I don't know where his head is at.

57 minutes and 28 secondsBut it's one of those companies

57 minutes and 30 secondswhere we do go through incredible ups and downs with each other.

57 minutes and 32 secondsAnd the thing I've always liked and admired about everyone,

57 minutes and 35 secondsbesides all the other things I like and admire about your work and creativity,

57 minutes and 38 secondsis that you strangely just really like to be together...
