# Black screen on launch (Brütal Legend)

 Common Issue

## Issue:

*The game won't proceed past a black screen upon launching*

## Solution:

###  Windows

The most common reason for this issue occurring is due to an issue with some newer monitor setups setting a refresh rate that the game struggles with. In order to get around this, you must either replace the existing screen.dat file or add a new one to the folder where the game looks for it.

1. Open up **File Explorer**
2. Click into the top bar (not the search box in the top right, but the long box to the left of that) and type `%appdata%\doublefine\brutallegend`
3. At this point you may see a screen.dat file, or it might not be present yet. Either way, extract the **screen.dat** file from the **screen.zip** file attached to the bottom of this support article below. n.b. do not just place the zip file in this folder, it must be extracted from the zip archive and placed here.
4. The game should launch correctly the next time you run it.
