Double Fine Action News

Greetings, DF Action Fans!

We hope this newsletter finds you well; as for us, we have a trove of cool stuff for you to check out that we've been up to since Keeper launched last month! It feels like we should go in chronological order, so let's talk about what's been cracking since launch day. It's always really exciting and a little scary to launch a video game into the world, you know.

We've been looking at Keeper for years now, having seen it grow from a tiny, weird little seed of an idea within the depths of Lee Petty's mind, into the dazzling work of interactive art we put into your eager hands. And now, you too can witness that process via "The Making Of Double Fine's Keeper," our newest documentary video! It's a 26-minute ride that covers the early days of Keeper's inception, all the way to launch day. Did you know some of our devs use VR to sculpt?

Once you're done watching the documentary, settle in and keep the YouTube Keeper binge going by watching two more videos that feature Lee! In one, he's talking about a some of the art, movie, and animation inspirations in his life that helped influence Keeper's look and feel; in the other, he walks through key games throughout his career and talks about his time on each. They're both very delightful, and we know some of you are Lee superfans, so please enjoy them all in any order you like!

The Making Of Keeper

The Making Of Keeper Watch this video on YouTube

After shocking the world with unprecedented development transparency in our PsychOdyssey, it occurred to us that times have changed, and you may need something a bit more digestible. A 33-episode documentary series? In this attention economy?? Thankfully, this one is only 26 minutes. Go behind the scenes and see how Keeper twisted and turned, until it morphed into its final form as the game you know today.

Many of us are faced with different paths to take through life. However, most of these paths do not lead to an ambulatory lighthouse with a sassy mutant bird friend. Today, in the Double Fine video studio, Lee Petty sits and tries to explain the many influences that helped set him down the path to create Keeper, one of 2025's most singular and evocative game experiences.

Keeper’s Creative Lead, Lee Petty, steps us through his illustrious career to chat about all the games, both shipped and cancelled, which paved the way to Keeper’s door. Travel back in time with us to hear how titles like Looney Tunes Racing and Whiplash ultimately brought him to Tim’s attention, and how he's applied a love of themes like body horror, post-humanism, and surrealism to games like Brütal Legend, Stacking, Headlander, and RAD at Double Fine.

Reviews and Accolades!

Of course, making a video game doesn't quite end when we push the big red "LAUNCH" button! Once we give it to the rest of the world, we have to brace for everyone's opinions. Terrifying stuff! Fortunately, a lot of game critics and players really loved Keeper, which made us all feel very warm and fuzzy on the insides. So many outlets enjoyed Keeper that we were able to make an Accolades trailer with some of the incredibly kind things said about the game, and we also wrote up a little post about it on the site, which you can read right here:

Exclusive Subscriber Content!

We've been thinking about ways to reward you for being a subscriber to the newsletter (we really appreciate you), and exclusive content seems like a pretty good one! So we asked Keeper Creative Director Lee Petty to send over some early concepts from the game, and tell you a bit about them. In future newsletters, you might see other fun little rewards like unlisted YouTube videos, subscriber-only wallpapers, or other fun little digital trinkets for you to enjoy! Take a look at these great pieces of concept art:

Opening Beach

"This painting was an exploration of mood at the start of the game. I was exploring the feeling of being lonely, isolated; an archaic left over with only a suggestion of humanity in the ruins of the small town surrounding the lighthouse. I was also experimenting with how much "painterly-ness" brush strokes we wanted to bring to the game art. I especially like the way the sun is painted here." - Lee Petty

Crab B02

"This is one of the first creatures I designed. I wanted it to look like a crab but at the same time have surprising elements, such as the wheel, port-hole eyes, and the sea mine shell. Instead of crab legs, the Clapperclaw has a lot of little anemone legs -- which were a lot of work to animate!"
- Lee Petty

What's Next?

We've got a lot planned for the holidays, both for the fans and around the studio, so keep your eyes peeled on our socials for some exciting updates and goodies! Until next time, stay safe out there, and watch out for Rocklings. They're very mischievous little scamps. I've heard they scavenge for human socks and use them in some strange, secret ritual we know very little about...
