25 Years of Double Fine Fan Art

Ashley Esqueda Ashley

After compiling and reviewing all of the amazing responses you sent to us as part of the 25 Years of Double Fine survey we sent out earlier this year, one thing stood out more than anything else:

Y'all love making Double Fine art. And you're pretty darn great at making it!

So while Peter had the monumental task of organizing and parsing the data from the survey, I got the (much more visually stimulating) task of enjoying your art and creating a blog post to celebrate it. I do have some experience with Double Fine art—I wrote The Art of Psychonauts 2, and I've been heading up Fan Art Friday posts on our Instagram and Bluesky lately—so I feel very qualified to write this blog post.

We received a lot of art! So much so that it made sense to split them up into different categories. Digital works of art ended up being the largest group of submissions, so let's jump into it, shall we?

P.S. - I hope you're comfortable. This is a huge post, with tons of art. Maybe bookmark it, so you can read it at your leisure over the next few weeks. To be fair, they asked the person who made a 400-page art book to choose the art and write text for this post. They knew what they were getting into. This post is an absolute unit, and I shan't apologize for it!

Digital Art

As mentioned in our survey results post, y'all love the one and only Razputin Aquato. He's the star of a good chunk of artwork submitted, and there were many pieces that focused on him solo. From sketches, to digital illustrations, all the way to mixed reality art, these 14 pieces all paid homage to our favorite Junior Psychonaut! Take a look:

Ridiculously rad renditions of Raz! (Make sure you scroll to the right to see them all if you're on a desktop browser!)

And what good is a Psychonauts game without the rest of the colorful cavalcade of characters we all know and love? Here's a little gallery of art featuring more of the Psychonauts crew, from both the original and the sequel! Feast your eyes upon beloved friends (and enemies) in this gallery...

A cavalcade of Psychonauts delights!

While the survey mentioned your favorite franchise was Psychonauts, you also sent in some really excellent pieces inspired by other franchises: Brütal Legend, Broken Age, and Grim Fandango were also popular picks for your digital artwork. Behold:

Double Fine, Brütal Legend, Broken Age, Grim Fandango, and even a Tentacle (or two)!

We even got art inspired by our very own studio logo! Look at this cute 2HB:

I assume 2HB is short for 2-Headed Batman now.

Cosplay, Crafts, and Merch

Of course, art doesn't just mean digital/physical illustration. Some of you got hands-on with your masterpieces, and created really cool cosplays, crafts and other mixed-medium pieces that we were blown away by. It's a spectacular level of attention to detail, and we feel honored so many of you took the time to get your hands dirty (and hot glued, and poked with sewing needles, and all kinds of other crafting mishaps that could happen to one's hands while making). On the flip side of the DIY crew, some of you just really like our merch, and sent in pictures of your extremely impressive Double Fine collections. We haven't seen some of these pieces in a long, long time, so it was nice to zoom in and see what types of knick knacks you've picked up from us over the years.

Costumes! Crafting! Collectibles!

Thank You!

We hope you enjoyed these creations as much as we did. And if you didn't see your work here, fear not! We had a lot of submissions, and some formats just didn't play nicely with the blog. But we loved them all just the same. Your animations, zines, videos, gifs, phone themes, and fanfics were all really amazing, too.

We feel so humbled and honored to have this wonderful community of fans that feel inspired by our work, and we hope to continue that tradition when Keeper launches in October. Thank you all so much. We don't take the love and support you give to us here at Double Fine for granted, and it's important to us that we celebrate you in return!

Here's to 25 more years of great games from us, and a great community in all of you. <3
