Inspirational!

Harper Jay Harper

It's been a fun time celebrating Psychonauts' birthday but all things do come to an end. We might return to some cool fan projects or stray bits but this will be our conclusion for now. We've focused a lot on art and creativity throughout this celebration, be it someone like Scott Campbell or fan artists. This time around, we wanna swing the focus back to world-building and design decisions. So we're handing it off to Tim.

Psychonauts is a well-documented game but one thing I really love about working with Tim is that he has a really good memory. I don't have one so it makes me jealous. This means that when we ask him for even more nuggets of wisdom, he's able to easily oblige. Like today! Tim sat down recently to go over 15 different inspirations that held shape Psychonauts ranging from books to movies to other videos games.

I won't spoil things but there's at least one inspirations that I'm glad to see him talk about. Tim's gotta really good taste in things and while it might sound funny to say I also like listening to him talk about the things slightly before my time. He's a real encyclopedia of cool stuff.

Whenever he mentions an older film that I've never heard of, it immediately goes on the watch list. You might consider that for the things on this list. Grab a Murakami novel, play a Dreamcast game, watch some vintage film. There's a lot that goes into making games and it's important experience.

So sit back and learn a bit more about the things that inspired Tim to make the game that inspired you!
