Instability and crashes (Psychonauts)

Filter by Platform:

Issue:

I'm experiencing crashes and/or instability on PC.

Solution:

Windows

Occasionally, newer computer configurations may cause instabilities in older games such as Psychonauts. These may range from inability to launch, random crashes, graphical glitches or other kinds of instability.

Some users have reported success getting Psychonauts to work properly in Windows by launching in compatibility mode.

Here are the steps to do that (be aware these steps might look and feel slightly different depending on the version of Windows):

  1. Find the folder where Psychonauts is installed (in Steam you can do this by going to your library and right clicking Psychonauts > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files)
  2. Locate Psychonauts.exe and right click on it and select Properties.
  3. Navigate to the compatibility tab and select the checkbox which reads Run this program in compatibility mode for:
  4. Select a version of the Windows Operating System
  5. Click OK

Different users may have success with different compatibility modes. Some users have reported success with Windows XP (Service Pack 3) .

macOS

Newer Mac computers which run off Apple Silicon processors (M1 and later) may show instability and graphical glitches while running Psychonauts. Intel-based applications running on Apple Silicon use a compatibility layer called Rosetta, and we are unable to guarantee that the game will run perfectly on these devices, and when Rosetta gets updates, compatibility issues may be fixed or be created by the new version. Unfortunately this is not a process that we have any control over.
