SIGH. I REMEMBER HOW SHE HATED THAT BETTE MIDLER SONG…

Tim Schafer Tim

From time to time, people will ask me if Razputin, the lovable hero of the Excellent Game Psychonauts, was based on a real person. And of course, when people ask me this I have to stop, and smile, and then answer, “What? Are you stupid? First of all, how did you get my phone number? And secondly, do you have a good lawyer? Well, do you? Because you’re going to need one if you ever call here again.”

Ha ha. Because, of course, the question is insane and rude.

But this weird thing happened to me the other day. I was looking in an old photo album, and I noticed this picture I took of Rose, my old girlfriend from freshman year at college.

Mmm. I can still remember the smell of her lucky, bacon-eatin' gloves….

Weird, isn’t it? I mean, I know it’s totally different—Raz is a ten-year-old boy, and he also wears his bag over his RIGHT shoulder—But when you look at the details, there is something…I don’t know… familiar. I’m not sure if it’s her pose, or the hat, or the psychic merit badges, or the fact that she was eating bacon when I took the picture, but I have to admit that I think on some abstract level, a lot of my subconscious memories of her might have made it into the game.

Good old Rose. I kind of lost touch with her over the years, and for some reason she never shows up on my drunken, late night, ex-girlfriend Googling sessions. I guess she got married and changed her last name from Pewton to something else. But wherever she is, I hope she’s happy, and that she doesn’t see this post and sue me.

On a completely unrelated note, did you know that tomorrow is Halloween? If you are, for some reason, inspired to dress up as a character from Psychonauts or something like that, why not send in a picture of you in your costume?

Of course, if you use our intellectual property to earn candy, then 20% of that candy is ours. And we get to pick the 20%. And I can tell you right now, you’re keeping all the apples, black licorice, and those little white Brach’s candies with the fruit inside. Ick.
